AN INTERACTIVE SESSION ON PHOTOGRAPHY

An interactive session on photography was conducted on 5th June 2021 for the Digex Members with a very renowned street photographer Mr.Vineet Vohra.  Mr. Vineet Vohra is the co-founder of APF magazine. He is the first Indian ever to become a Leica ambassador. Just after he completed his graduation from the prestigious college of Arts, Mr Vineet started his career as a wildlife photographer but later on switched to street photography. He has over 20 years of experience.

In the interactive session, the members were taught numerous ways to look at photography as a skill. They also learnt what goes behind the making of a good photograph such as the thought process and vision rather than the usual camera settings or techniques. Valuable tips on how to use photography as a tool of self expression, the importance of having a unique perspective and how to be ready to unlearn were few things which were told and discussed. Mr Vineet  used his years of experience to help members realise there is more to photography than just a photograph that looks good, it’s about portraying a story. The picture one clicks should have a past and a future and that should be clearly visible to the person observing the photograph.

The session was made very interactive and a lot of questions were addressed. The workshop concluded with the vote of thanks by the Digex Club Incharge Ms Sarika Kaushal. It was a wonderful session which led to the ignition of a new understanding in the budding photographers.

Guest Speaker Programme (DM-GeoQuest Club)

The DM-GeoQuest Club of the Geography Department organised a Guest Speaker Programme on the topicOne Click! One Species Saved !  ‘Photography as a Tool for Wildlife Conservation’ on the eve of the World Environment Day, June 4, 2021. The event are inaugurated by the Vice Principal, Ms Renu Nayar

The session was conducted by the Presidents of the DM-GeoQuest Club, Sharanya Bhardwaj and Priyanka Yadav.They warmly welcomed the distinguished guest speaker, Mr. Amlendu Dubey, a wildlife enthusiast and photographer. Mr. Amlendu Dubey grew up reading various tiger hunting books and was always fascinated by the sheer power of the animal. He has visited numerous tiger reserves across the country and has learnt jungle craft. He started a safari company and started taking various clients for tiger expeditions and worked with local NGOs for the benefit of tigers in Sariska.

Mr. Dubey talked about the importance of wildlife conservation and narrated his own experiences. He explained how photography can play a crucial role in increasing awareness about wildlife. Mr Amlendu Dubey’s stunning photographs have been published in 

Rajasthan government tourism brochures and also 2020 his work has been recognized in one of the biggest virtual photographic platform named 500px.com.

This was followed by an interactive Question-Answer session conducted by the Vice-President of the club, Yana Sheoran. The session concluded with the vote of thanks by the head of the Department Geography Ms Rupa Das. Coordinators for the GSP event were club incharges Ms Arti Trivedi, and Ms Sangita Bajpai.

GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAMME ON THE TOPIC “SCOPE AND RELEVANCE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES”

Delhi Public School R.K. Puram organised a Guest Speaker Programme on the topic “Scope and Relevance of Foreign Languages” on 28 May 2021 for the students of classes VIII- X. 

The First Guest speaker, Ms Maryline Laidin is an Attaché for Cooperation in french language at the Institut Français of the  French Embassy. She has been working in this capacity since September 2018. She is responsible for the northern zone and  for  the conduction of DELF and DALF exams in India.

The second Guest speaker, Dr. Shruti Jain is an Associate Professor at the Global Languages Centre, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, Haryana. She has received her PhD from the Centre of German Studies, School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her areas of interest are Literature and Cultural Studies focussing on Indo-German Encounters and German Language Teaching. 

The Vice Principal, Dr. Renu Nayar, Headmistress and HOD, Foreign Languages Department, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra, the Class Representatives, Class teachers, and students of classes VIII-X attended the session. 

During the Guest Speaker Programme,  Ms. Laidin conducted a very interactive session. In the first session she spoke about the scope and relevance of foreign languages in general and in the second part she emphasised on French language and culture and it’s career prospects. She also held an interactive session on French and English loan words, which the audience thoroughly enjoyed. 

Dr. Jain focussed on relevance and scope of German language in various sectors. She highlighted on foreign language education in India and scholarships under DAAD ( German Academic Exchange Service). She gave cross cultural references of Indo-German connection through literature. 

This was followed by a Question and Answer session where Ms Laidin and Dr. Jain provided insightful answers to wide-ranging questions from the students. 

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Headmistress, and HoD, Foreign Languages Department, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra. The event was organised by Mr. Vaibhav Popli with technical support from Mr. Mukesh Kumar and his team.

VIRTUAL ONLINE ORIENTATION – CLASS XI -2021-2022

A  virtual online orientation programme was organised for the parents of class XI students on Saturday,12 June 2021. The programme timings were 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The sections were staggered into groups for time slots to ensure smooth conduct of the program. 

The meeting was conducted by the class teachers who invited the parents to join the online meeting.The class teachers gave the parents a virtual tour of the school and also showed a small presentation to the parents.The class teachers introduced the Principal Ms Padma Srinivasan to the parents. Ms Padma Srinivasan addressed all the parents and welcomed them.She also told them that the school looked forward to their support to ensure that students followed discipline during online classes.The principal appreciated the unflinching support of parents and the conduct of students on G-Suite account. The Principal requested the parents to monitor the performance of the students very closely so that if a child is facing any problem with a subject, the child may change the subject at the earliest for smooth sailing.

The Principal also mentioned that if any kid was feeling stressed or facing any psychological issues, the parents may feel free to consult the school counsellor. They could get in touch with the Class Representatives and fix an appointment with the school counsellor.The Vice Principal, Dr Renu Nayyar addressed the parents,welcomed the new admissions(day scholars and hostellers) to the DPS family and told them about the importance of regularity,importance of Online Ethics, wearing uniform and taking Monday Tests regularly. The Vice Principal also spoke to the parents about the assignment booklets that would be shortly distributed to the students. She also spoke to the parents about various clubs and urged the parents to encourage students to actively participate in all school activities.

The Class Representatives welcomed the parents and spoke about the importance of regularity and Online ethics.The subject teachers briefed the parents about their subject,books,project work and the marking scheme of the paper.  The meeting ended with the class teachers thanking the parents for participating  enthusiastically in the programme and understanding the ethos of the school. 75% of parents attended the virtual meeting. (641/899) .Parents were very appreciative about the way the orientation was conducted and especially mentioned about the video which showed the virtual tour of the school. Parents said that the interaction was very informative and all their queries were answered.

EXPRESSIONS THEATRE CLUB – SUMMER ACTIVITY ‘CATCHPHRASE’

The Expressions Theatre Club of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram, organised an event for class XII students during the summer vacations. The activity was conducted by the club incharge, Ms. Sanya Taneja.

In the activity titled ‘Catchphrase’ students were required to work in a group to be able to select a catchphrase and weave a plot around the same. They were given an opportunity to synthesise various elements of theatre like setting, props,plot, character, theme,dialogues and music. The catchphrase was an encapsulation of the larger idea and it made the students realise the importance of perspective and projection.

The participants utilized their creativity and imagination to present well-knit acts. The acts represented an amalgamation of talent, skills and knowledge which gave way to experiential learning.Their enthusiasm and earnest efforts were appreciated by the teacher incharge and the other theatre enthusiasts.  

The activity was engaging as it allowed the participants to quench their thirst for theatre and explore latent abilities. It offered a platform to collaborate , communicate and create meaningful experiences. The participants submitted their acts which were presented on the google meet platform.Participants were delighted to exhibit their talents and they also expressed their sense of fulfillment associated with the process.

GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAMME – CAREER IN MEDIA

The English Department of Delhi Public School,R.K.Puram organised a Guest Speaker Programme on Career in Media for the students of classes X and XII on 5 June 2021. The Guest speaker was Ms. Swati Singh.

Ms. Swati Singh has been a part of the media industry for the past 18 years. Her wide range of experience covers a spectrum of various domains like journalism, advertising, public relation, event management and strategy creation. She has worked with organisations like the Times of India,Hindustan Times,Indian Express,Mercantile Advertising,Career Launcher,Shutterhead films and Here on Communication.

The Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan welcomed the Guest Speaker and shared her thoughts about the field. She spoke about the significance of Media and emphasized that it is emerging as a very promising career option. She also suggested that the field could be illusionary for those who set it as a glamorous one because it demands a lot of hard work and dedication.

The session helped the attendees to familiarize themselves with the concept of Mass Media and various career options associated with it.The resource person shed light on Media as a profession, various fields associated with media and also spoke about the skill set required to be a part of the profession.

The  session covered coherent information about profiles in Media like journalism, electronic media,Advertising and Public relations.Ms. Swati enlightened  the students about the process of application, entrance exams and required media aptitude.She shared details related to important dates and various courses at various universities. 

This was followed by an interactive question answer round.The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Atika Dayal, who thanked Ms.Swati Singh for her valuable time and efforts.The staff members and students expressed their gratitude towards the speaker for an informative and fruitful session.

Guest Speaker Programme on “India: The Next Superpower? The Role of the Youth in this Endeavour”

Delhi Public School R.K. Puram hosted a Guest Speaker Programme on the topic “India: The Next Superpower? The Role of the Youth in this Endeavour” on the 7th June 2021 for students of Classes VI to XII.

Mr. Ishan Bakshi, the guest speaker, is currently Deputy Associate Editor at The Indian Express where he is part of the Editorial and Opinions Team. He is an Alumni of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram and he pursued his Bachelors in Economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi. He also holds a Doctorate in Economics from IIT. He has previously worked as a research scholar at the National Council for Applied Economics Research, India’s premier Economic Policy Think Tank. 

Ms. Padma Srinivasan, Principal, Dr Renu Nayar, Vice Principal, Class Representatives  Teachers and students of classes VI-XII attended the session. While addressing the audience, the Principal Ms Padma Srinivasan ,emphasised upon the importance of such programs to inspire and enable the students to be the torchbearers of India’s future growth.

The compères, Mridul Malani and Saanvi Sekhri, began the Guest Speaker Programme by cheerfully welcoming all attendees. This was followed by a brief presentation by Mr. Ishan Bakshi which included a statistical analysis regarding the population, the economy, and several other parameters like Mobile Penetration, Development of Roads, and Household Electricity to give students an understanding of India’s growth trajectory as well as its comparison with other countries. 

This was followed by the Question and Answer session conducted by Aarushi Gupta and Aditya Mathur where Mr Bakshi answered questions asked by students. While answering the questions, Mr Bakshi also highlighted Coronavirus’ adverse impact on the projected growth and the possible set back it could have on India’s aspirations of being a superpower. 

The session  concluded with a vote of thanks by the Vice Principal Dr Renu Nayyar.. The programme was organised by Ms. Shelly Malhotra and Mrs. Archna Deepak with  technical support from Mr Mukesh Kumar and his team.

 JUST A MINUTE EVENT

A minute to think, a moment to seize, and a chance to convey…

The Catalyst Club of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram organised, ‘Just A Minute’ for the students of class XII on 4th May 2021. The topics for the activity included ‘Bohr’s Model Of Atom’, ‘Antibiotics’, ‘Chemical Bonding in Water’, ‘Hybridisation’ and ‘The Modern Periodic Table’

The aim of this event was to promote spontaneity and interest among the students in  scientific concepts and make them realise the importance of chemistry in daily life. 

The participants were assigned a topic and were given one minute to contemplate, put their ideas together and then speak upon the topic for another minute. Additionally, the students expanded their knowledge by discussing and listening to each other’s viewpoints .

The event was successfully organised by the President of the Catalyst Club, Rishit Gupta XII-M(Batch-2021) , Ashmi Shriya XII-N and Shambhavi Mittal XII-L, under the guidance of the Catalyst Club incharge Ms Alinda Holla. It was an immense learning experience for everyone. 

FORENSIC FASCINATIONS

In Marcus Tullius Cicero words, ‘The aim of forensic oratory is to teach, to delight, to move.’ Taking a cue from this quote, the Catalyst Club of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram organised an interactive session on the topic ‘Forensic Fascinations’ for students of class XII on 18th May 2021, to get an insight into the intriguing world of Forensic Chemistry, and to see how the subject plays an important role in solving some of the most famous mysteries and crimes.

It began with a brief introduction about ‘Forensics’ and how the best-selling novels of Agatha Christie, such as ‘The Lemesurier Inheritance’ , ‘ Mysterious Affairs at Styles’, ‘Appointment with Death’s and ‘Dumb Witness’, extensively involve chemical analysis, to reach a conclusion for it has been rightly said, ‘Great plots are devilishly built and ingeniously solved under the wings of Chemistry!’   

The event focussed upon some forensic cases, involving the element ‘Thallium’. A  brief account of the element, was followed by a discussion on some of the most interesting and intriguing facts that are of extreme value in identification in criminal cases. 

The aim of this session was to learn, understand the power of chemistry and discover the different vistas that the field of Chemistry offers. The students were actively involved in the session and gave very positive responses. Everyone had a great learning experience. The event was also attended by Mr Parminder Chopra, who is in charge of the ‘Pre Pharmacy Club’.

The event was organised by the President of the Catalyst Club, Rishit Gupta XII-M(Batch-2021), Shambhavi Mittal XII-L, and R. Harini XII-A under the guidance of the Catalyst Club incharge Ms. Alinda Holla.

SUMMER DELIGHT ACTIVITIES (SCHOLASTIC) – CLASSES VI-VIII (2021-22)

“School’s out, summers in, let the drama stop and the fun begin.”

Delhi Public School R.K.Puram organised a plethora of summer activities for Grades VI- VIII in the month of April and May ‘21 which provided the students with an opportunity to engage well with the subjects of their choice.  These activities carried an element of fun and aided a platform for experimentation and creative expression. The aim was to develop creativity, enhance knowledge, facilitate language learning and improve expression besides boosting confidence.

English A variety of activities based on creative writing such as picture poetry and story writing, fun vocabulary/grammar based quizzes and movie viewing were organised. Grade 6 organised ‘Acrostic poetry -Poetry Writing’, ‘The One-Man Show -Theatre and Speaking Skills’ and ‘End it your way – Creative writing Activity’. Grade 7 conducted ‘Caption-Gram– Creative Caption Writing’, ‘Wizards of Words– Language and Grammar Quiz’ and ‘Listen-O-Hara– Listening Skills Activity’ while Grade 8 came up with ‘Point of View– Visual Cue and Discussion’, ‘The Writer’s Quill– Story Writing’ and ‘Snap Poetry– Picture Based Poetry Writing’. 

Math– The activities were designed to encourage students to apply their problem solving techniques to solve real world problems. Some were hands-on activities to enable them to apply their critical thinking skills to generalise mathematical rules and also introduced them to new mathematical concepts. Grade 6 organised ‘TravelSmart’, ‘Finding the rule’ and ‘Knowing Tessellations’. Grade 7 conducted ‘Decimal Mathemagic’ and ‘Fun with Distances’. Grade 8 performed ‘Competency Based Learning’ and ‘Mind Maps’.

Hindi– The activities were created to instill values, promote creativity and language skills.  These involved creating out of waste, virtual tour of Sabarmati Ashram, world wide news and discussion on advertisements, dialogue writing, role play and picture story presentation. Grade 6 organised ‘Aon Chalein’, ‘Chhote Parivartan Bada Prabhav’and ‘West Se Best’. Grade 7 conducted ‘Desh Duniya- Samachar Vachan’, ‘Baatcheet’ and ‘Tatkalik Bhashan’.  Grade 8 coordinated ‘Sujh Bujh’, ‘Suno Aur Batao’ and ‘Vigyapan Charcha’.

Science– The activities aimed at experiential learning so that students reflect upon  various exhibits and scientific concepts and their application in daily life.  These activities gave them a platform: to inculcate scientific attitude and values, for instance calculating the temperature of the given quantity of water; to become environment conscious and develop sensitivity towards plants; to encourage ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ of kitchen wastes and do organic farming; to sensitise them towards their health and the need to protect themselves by preparing and eating immunity boosting foods especially during Covid times; to make them understand how building immunity saves us from life threatening diseases. They prepared infographics, posters and mind maps on the impact of climate change on biodiversity. They created slides to show the importance of vaccines.  The activities increased climate literacy among young learners and encouraged changes in their attitude and behaviours. Virtual tour of the Nehru Science Centre was an innovative way of showing exhibits to the students. Role play enabled them to identify and take up the role of the chemical substances present in disinfectants used at their homes. Grade 6 organised ‘Role Play- Lockdown your boredom with Science’, ‘Virtual Tour- The Nehru Science Centre’ and ‘3R’s Towards Organic Farming’.  Grade 7 conducted ‘Racing The Heat’, ‘Transferring Heat (1)’, ‘Transferring Heat (2)’, Let’s Experiment: Chemical Reactions, Immunity Boosters and ‘Immunity Boosters 2: Master Chef’. Grade 8 coordinated ‘ Chemistry Is Fun’, ‘Chemical Changes’, ‘Colour Changing Chemical Magic’, ‘Impact Of Climate Change On Biodiversity’, ‘The Art Of Fermentation’,  ‘Vaccine- The Saviour Of Life’, ‘The Magic Of Liquid Pressure’ and ‘Edging Closer To Pressure And Area’.

Social Science– The activities enabled the students to understand the impact of their actions on the environment. They were familiarized with new words and engaged in experiential learning. They understood the importance of coins, the work of archaeologists, certain historical events such as the Battle of Plassey, the need to provide equal opportunities to women, the framework of the Constitution, the evolution of the Solar System, the issue of ‘Climate Change’, scarcity of water resource and using drip irrigation system for growing herbs and  managing waste and recycle plastic bottles to grow herbs.  The activities involved JAM sessions, drafting a Preamble, interactions, discussions, videos, virtual tours, presentations, story telling, listening skill and quizzes. Grade 6 conducted ‘Coins Speak’ and ‘Our Unique Earth: Through My Lens’Grade 7 organised ‘Women Changing the World ( Audio/ Visual and JAM session)’ and ‘Climate Change Is Real!’. Grade 8 coordinated ‘Battle of Plassey- Landmark in Indian History’,  ‘Mera Savidhan, Mera Maan (Draft your own Preamble)’ and Green Thumb’. A story telling session was conducted by the distinguished guest Prof. Danish Iqbal, an exponent of Dastangoi, an Urdu story telling art form for Grades 6-8.

French-  The objective of the activities was to orient the students towards French language and culture.  The activities involved dialogue and descriptive paragraph writing, virtual tour of Paris and writing greetings based on pictures, dictionary words and a few hints. Grade 6 conducted ‘Complete the Dialogue and Greetings’.  Grade 7 organised ‘Describe Your Family, Describe Your Living Room’. Grade 8 coordinated ‘Virtual Tour of Paris’.

German– The reading, writing, speaking and listening activities were designed to enhance their understanding of the language.  The activities required the students to read a German text, speak about their family members in the language, make hand puppets, listen to a song on the ‘Finger Family’, paragraph writing on how to stay healthy and discussion on a text.  Grade 6 conducted ‘Reading Skills’ and ‘Meine Finger Familie’. Grade 7 organised ‘Paragraph Writing’. Grade 8 coordinated ‘Reading Skills’.

Spanish– The activities laid emphasis on orienting them to Spanish language, art and culture.  These acquainted the students with life in Madrid, the capital of Spain through a web series. They were introduced to vocabulary and phrases related to ordering food in a restaurant, to taking a taxi, to ask for directions etc. They were made to practise correct pronunciation and vocabulary through tongue twisters. They were encouraged to read story books in Spanish.  They were familiarized with Miguel de Cervantes, one of the most famous writers of Spain and his best known novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha.  This was done through the medium of a short biographical video, an animated short movie of his novel, followed by a virtual tour of Alcala de Henares, the birthplace of Cervantes.  The students also listened to an audio of a story followed by a discussion on new words and phrases, characters, messages that it conveyed etc. Quizzes were also conducted to check their understanding of the language. Grade 6 conducted ‘Mi Vida Loca’, ‘Trabalenguasand ‘La Hora del Cuento: La Señora y El Águila’. Grade 7 conducted ‘Historia: El Niño Sin Nombre’ and ‘Miguel de Cervantes y Don Quixote’. Grade 8 coordinated ‘Historia: Los Zombies No Comen Verduras’.

Sanskrit– The reading, writing, speaking and listening activities were designed to enhance their understanding of the language. They were made to listen to short stories and watched movies in Sanskrit followed by a discussion and a Google quiz.  The students were asked to make sentences from counting 1 to 4 in all the Lings (लिङ्ग) with a pictorial presentation. Grade 6 conducted अवधानेन शृणुत, पठत संस्कृतम् and  लिखत संस्कृतम्. Grade 7 organised अवधानेन शृणुत. Grade 8 coordinated अवधानेन शृणुत.
