September: Gandhiji’s  Values & Ideology

The theme ‘Gandhian Values’ was chosen as the value of the month for Classes VI to VIII. Class teachers and subject teachers discussed instances from Mahatma Gandhi’s life which illustrated his drive to put truth and honesty above all else. Teachers and students also discussed the power behind the concept of non-violence. They related stories from Gandhiji’s autobiography “My Experiments With Truth’. The students shared famous quotations about Gandhiji.

 Class teachers and subject teachers encouraged the students to follow the path shown by Gandhiji. Topics like Non-Violence, Truth, Faith in God, Equality, Peace, Ideal Society were discussed. The students took part in putting up their class boards with vigour and spread the patriotic fervour everywhere in the campus. The boards contained relevant quotes and information about the life of the Mahatma. The teachers emphasised about the necessity to follow Gandhiji’s principles in the recent times and explained several incidents from his life that proved his ardent belief in non- violence and Satyagraha. There are 5  principles that Mahatma Gandhi followed were discussed like

  • Truth: learning from your own mistakes and conducting experiments on yourself.
  • Nonviolence: nonviolent resistance connected in a way to religion.
  • Vegetarianism: carved in the Hindu and Jain traditions in India.
  • Simplicity: giving up unnecessary spending.
  • Faith: belief in a higher power and that all religions are real and are equal.

The students discussed all the ways in which they can adopt the ideals of Gandhiji in their day-to-day life. Students also prepared the boards displaying the value of the month. The winners were judged as follows:

Celebrating 150 Years Of Mahatma Gandhi

“By education I mean an all-round drawing of the best in child and man in mind body and spirit.” – Mahatma Gandhi

On the 2nd of October, 2019, D.P.S R.K. Puram hosted a variety of cultural performances and competitions to “Commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi”. 

The event began with the unveiling of the relief painting of Mahatma Gandhi by the Principal, Vice Principals, Headmistresses and School appointments. As part of the “Swachh Bharat Mission”, a cleanliness drive was undertaken by the teachers and students. This initiative was a step further to achieve Mahatma’s vision of hygiene and health.This was followed by tree plantation outside the school premises.The SDMC schools from Sector 4 and Sector 5 of R K Puram were invited to be a part of this celebration.

The Cultural Programme commenced with a melodious rendition by students of “We Shall Overcome” and its Hindi version “Hum Honge Kamyab”. Their harmonious voices in sync created a vibrant atmosphere. 

Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Principal, D.P.S. R.K. Puram, was  invited on stage to address the gathering. She urged the students to adopt the Gandhian principles of peace and non-violence in their everyday lives and follow them righteously. She highlighted the importance of truth and motivated the students, juniors and seniors alike, to “speak the truth everyday”. On this occasion, her emphasis was on the need to enliven the spirit of Gandhi. The Principal appreciated the presence of the students of D.P.S East of Kailash and D.P.S. Vasant Vihar, remarking that “these are the days to be celebrated and celebrated together”. She wished those present the best of luck for the day’s competitions.  

The Principal along with the Vice Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan released the 2019-20 edition of the History Magazine, ‘Bapu@150’.  

The students of D.P.S. East of Kailash, D.P.S. Vasant Vihar and D.P.S. R.K. Puram performed splendid dance sequences  to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The children showcased their talent and zeal by their breathtaking choreography. The gathering was electrified through their invigorating presentation,. 

On 1st October 2019, a team comprising of 46 students of class X AND XI from D.P.S. R.K. Puram performed a play titled ‘Bapu Yahan Hai’ at the Commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi held at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath Road.The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal  appreciated the diligent efforts of students and teachers who made the play a “phenomenal success”. She welcomed the budding actors to enact their heart-warming drama. The play centered around the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and their relevance in contemporary times. The staging aroused the spirit of patriotism  amongst the children as they applauded enthusiastically. 

The Vice Principals and Headmistresses, praised the efforts of the students and encouraged them to inculcate the teachings of Gandhi in order to truly pay respect to him. 

The Cultural Programme concluded with the National Anthem. 

The several departments of the school organised interactive events that sought to teach values and ideals of Mahatma. Events like Turncoat Debate, Slam Poetry, Code Breaker, Science Quiz, Business Plan, Sell Your Wares,  ‘कविता पाठ’, Khadi In Style were conducted and students actively participated in them. The children were felicitated with medals and certificates. 

The English Department organized ‘Slam Poetry’ and a ‘Turncoat Debate’ for students of all classes. The event saw many budding poets and debaters discuss and deliberate Gandhian Principles such as Non-Violence, Truth, Peace, Freedom and Service. 

The Hindi Department organised ‘नाटक’ for class VI, ‘कविता पाठ’ for classes VII-X and ‘आमना-सामना’ for Classes XI-XII. The events displayed a mesmerizing display of patriotic sentiments of our freedom fighters and national leaders. 

The Mathematics Department conducted an interesting set of events: ‘Tangrams- Geometrical Shapes’ for Classes VI and VII, ‘Stamp/ File Cover’ for Class VIII and ‘Code Breaker’ Quizzes for classes IX-XII which depicted the Mahatma’s life and messages using mathematical logic. 

The Science Department organized Quizzes and Paper Presentations that illustrated Gandhiji’s views on topics like Food Habits and Swachhta. 

A ‘Business Plan’ event was organized by the Commerce Department. The event witnessed many innovative business ideas based on the theme of ‘Make In India’- Swadeshi Movement. 

The Economics Department held a ‘Sell Your Wares’ contest wherein the students of all classes designed products that could be manufactured easily by domestic industries using village products. 

Competition on ‘एकल देश भक्ति गायन’ was conducted by the Sanskrit Department in addition to ‘सूक्ति लेखन’ on a T-Shirt for classes VI-VIII and Classes IX-XII respectively. 

The Social Science Department organized competitions such as ‘Folder Designing’ which aimed to showcase Gandhi ji’s life and ‘Khadi in Style’ with an aim to popularise cottage industries.

The Art Department organised a ‘Painting Competition’. The students displayed their artworks on the topics-‘Gandhi ji’s life inspires me to…..’ and ‘Swachhta…a guarantee of good health’. The Library Department organised ‘Bookmark and Book Jacket designing’ competitions to give students a platform to display their creativity.

In Create out of waste, a product using recyclable material was made and displayed for judgement.

The Music Department gave students an opportunity to create magic with the beating of tablas, rhythm of guitars, flutes and their melodious voices on the theme-‘What Gandhi means to me’

The Dance Department organised a competition of various dance forms ranging from classical to semi- classical to folk and contemporary. Each performance displayed a vibrant array of colour and talent.

A workshop on Solar Light Kit Assembly was conducted by the Science Department to make students aware about its importance.

The Computer Science Department organised Digital Poster Making competition.

The students participated in the plethora of events with zest and zeal, with each of them rousing a spirit of nationalism as the school celebrated the Father of the Nation.

Keeping in mind GandhiJi’s emphasis on good health ,Athletics and Swimming Competitions were organised by the Sports Department.

Topic– Be the change you wish to see in this world

The assembly of XI O and W started with a Vandana. The students beautifully conveyed the problems existing in our society through a skit and how Gandhiji would have reacted had he been here. The skit was followed by a glorious presentation and song from West Bengal and a harmonious song among other things.

Think Summit 2019

‘Innovation is seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

  Think Summit’19 was
organised by the Think Lab of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram on 28 September
2019, with the aim of helping the students develop innovative skills. The event
saw the participation of 20 schools that participated in 7 events.

Out of the Box was conducted for students of classes
VI-VIII, who enthusiastically took part in a competition where they had to put
up a working model based on the theme “A solution for better living.” The event
was judged by Dr. G S Chilana, an associate professor and Dr. Sunil Kumar, an
assistant professor in physics at Ramjas College.

Confabulation, the group discussion event required
the participants, in teams of two, to articulate, express and debate on topics
related to current social issues. Participants were assessed on their
originality in expression, insight, creativity, relevance and reaching a
concrete solution. The event was judged by Mr. Arvind Mehta, secretary to the
Government of India, Ms. Gita Sarup Mehta, alumna of Delhi Public School, RK
Puram, Ms. Neha Kaushik, a digital strategy professional, Ms. Alisha Lamba, a
health professional and Ms. Ambika Kaul, the college advisor and counsellor at
DPS, RK Puram.           

Ideate-2-Innovate: The students of classes XI-XII
were provided with the opportunity to use their creativity, authenticity and
insight to innovate. The judges for this event were Ms. Meghna Kaushik works
with Vanto Group and Ms.Nandini Agarwal software engg at Adobe and Mr. Sidharth
Gulati student at St Stefan’s.

Innovation Marathon proved to be the test for the
participants’ creative thinking, teams of four, consisting of students from
classes XI-XII, were required to devise projects on topics which were given on
the spot.

Action in Innovation was based on the premise that a
problem can be solved in many different ways and it is a person’s innate
rational skills that provide the best possible solution. The participants, in
teams of four, had to come up with a skit based on prompts that ranged from
e-waste to electricity consumption in Delhi. The event was judged by Ms.
Arundhati Singh, former member of the ISS and Mr. Sidharth Gulati.

Screen Time: The participants combined their sense of
innovation with movie-making skills. The event was assessed on the parameters
of innovation, creativity, insight and viability. The judges were Ms. Arundhati
Singh, Mr. Manoj Kumar, officer in the Finance Wing of MoD and Ms. Shweta
Kohli, head of Government affairs and public policy.

Design My Superhero was organised for the students of
classes VI-VIII to showcase their imaginative and innovative powers in
designing their own superhero who can solve the current problems faced by the
world. They were also required to give a brief description of the superpowers
of their superheroes.

The valedictory ceremony commenced with a graceful Odissi
dance followed by a western dance and a western song. A skit about reducing
e-waste and a movie educating the audience about the harmful effects of
single-use plastic were showcased by the winning teams.

The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal addressed the gathering,
emphasising on the need to teach children to think. Students should be asked
questions which require them to think in a creative and innovative manner. She
said that in the Think Lab students are not told what to do, but are allowed to
research whatever interests them. She believes that when doing something
innovative, instead of thinking about what might be possible in the future, one
should look for ways to change the present. One shouldn’t expect the next
generation to make something happen, but make it happen themselves. We should
grasp every opportunity ahead to learn and think. She then thanked the teachers
who helped and guided the students.

The Principal, released the second edition of the annual
magazine of the Think Lab – “Eunoia”. Ms. Archna Deepak, the club in-charge,
delivered the vote of thanks and the event concluded with the National Anthem.

Interactive session on Water Conservation

Interactive session on Water Conservation, importance of trees and Say ‘No’ to Plastics for Class VIII on September 25,2019

Students of Class VIII had an interactive session on Water Conservation, importance of trees and the danger that ‘single use’ plastics pose to us in today’s world, with Ms. Anshu Sharma, Founder Toysrep. The resource person was felicitated by the Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal, with a Book and a Potted plant She was warmly welcomed by the Headmistress, Ms. Niva Chhonkar.The session began with a brief introduction of the Resource person. the session started with a focus on conservation of water since Fresh water is becoming a rare commodity. She threw light upon the amount of water being used for day to day activities and how at this rate we could be facing a severe scarcity of water in the coming years. She highlighted the 5 Rs of water: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Renew and Respect water. She sensitized the students that they need to be proactive so as to save water for themselves.

She also created awareness in the students towards the ‘misuse ‘of plastics. Plastics are the bane of our modern lives with several industries banking on it, textile, pharmaceuticals, newspaper, aeronauticals. She advised that a minimalistic approach could reduce the use of plastics. Our clothing, footwear and accessories use many a microplastics which accumulate in our environment when we discard them. She also introduced the element of shock when she displayed pictures of birds, turtles’ bodies full of plastics. These animals were tricked into thinking them to be food particles, in the oceans. The session ended with a quiz in which the students participated enthusiastically. Correct respondents were rewarded with pens.The session was informative and thought provoking.

Topic-Spreading peace across the world
The theme of the assembly of Class VIII A draws attention to the importance of spreading peace across the world. It is an occasion to educate others on concerns related to war through a skit, ‘Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes, on Hiroshima- Nagasaki bombing. On the other hand, the idea of peace is propagated as the student’s exhibit Gandhi Ji’s set of values. The choir presentation on ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon and the dance performance on ‘Symphony’ by Zara Larsson and Clean Bandit further reinforce and celebrate the theme in its full fervor.
Topic-Every artist was first an amateur
The students of VIIIC have demonstrated that if you want to be successful in life, you can only do it by hard work and dedication .Talent is a wonderful gift which has to be constantly honed to achieve perfection. This the only way to progress from an amateur to an expert. Children also spoke on Gandhi ji’s contribution towards the upliftment of the society to celebrate 150 years of his birth anniversary. A beautiful thought and prayer was dedicated to him.

Topic: The 3 C’s of life- Choices, Chances, Changes

“You have two choices… One will lead you to happiness, the other – to sadness! My advise to you is to take it head on!” You must make the choice, to take the chance, if you want anything to change. The students of class XI A and XI H beautifully rendered this idea by incorporating Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals in their morning prayer, thoughts for the day, speech, choir and skit. They brought out the different facets of the state of Gujarat, the birth place of the Mahatma with a special ‘Garba’ performance. Through their assembly, the students conveyed the message that, “We have the power to change our life; and all we have to do is decide.”

Topic: “Strength comes from an Indomitable Will.” –Mahatma Gandhi. To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, students of class IX-K and IX-L presented their class assembly on one of the many values of Bapu. The morning assembly started with Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan, “Hey Ram”. Through speeches, self-composed poems and enactment the idea of perseverance and determination was portrayed. The song “Sabarmati ke Sant” was sung by the children as a tribute to Gandhiji.



Report On Celebration Of Reading Week

16TH SEPTEMBER TO 20TH  SEPTEMBER,2019

In order to inculcate reading habits in students, class 9 and 10  had organised a ‘ Celebration of reading week.’  as announced by the CBSE.Students were asked to bring a book that they have read and highlight the synopsis, message conveyed and what they liked about the book. The students of all the sections enthusiastically participated in the activity. The homeroom and language periods were chosen for the book discussion activity. Students analysed the books and encouraged their peers to read them through their book reviews. Teachers played the role of facilitator in this activity. 

Students reviewed the books and presented critical analysis for the same. There were also class discussions conducted wherein students talked about the books that they have read,  highlighting characters and events that they particularly liked and students got the opportunity to share their valuable inputs. The style, ease of language and attitude of writers were also discussed. After the discussion the students were asked to write their views on the book read by them.

It was noticed that most children love to read books suggested by their peers. Language teachers played a very instrumental role in in conducting these activities. They shared a list of suggested readings to the children. It was an enlightening activity.

Sapling Plantation on the celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

To initiate the celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Sapling Plantation was carried out in the Delhi Public School; R.K.Puram Campus on September 18, 2019.Plantation was done by the Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Principal and Headmistresses, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra & Ms. Niva Chhonkar. Campaign against Single Use Plastic was carried out.Pamplets were distributed in the classes and the teachers discussed the need to say ‘NO to SUP’. The message to create awareness about the importance of Water and Water Conservation , Harmful effects of SUP were conveyed through Assembly, banner and Screen display. Students from Class VI to XII took the pledge to take steps to conserve water as every drop counts.

Dhruv Rajgarhia 2019

Delhi Public School RK Puram hosted its 18th Dhruv Rajgarhia Memorial Inter-School English Debate Competition on 16 August, 2019. A total of seventeen schools participated in the event, with three speakers from each school. The event was coordinated by Ms. Kavita Kumar, the Teacher I/C Debating Society.

Affectionately remembered as a peacemaker and a boy with an unmatched gusto for life, Dhruv Rajgarhia was a keen sportsman and an enthusiastic debater. The event was instated  by his grandfather, Late Shri K. L. Rajgarhia, to encourage students to actively indulge in debates and other linguistic activities.

The competition was divided into two parts. The preliminaries consisted of three simultaneous events – classical debate, extempore, and turncoat debate – wherein one participant from each school spoke on the proposed motion, adhering to a time limit of three minutes. This was followed by the second part which had three rounds – the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the finals. 

A mosaic of ironies, humour and fighting stereotypes, the classical debate proved to be a very interesting and engaging event. The Classical Debate was judged by:

  • Pramiti Singh, DPS RK Puram alumna, currently pursuing Sociology at JMC
  • Kasvi Bhardwaj, studying Sociology at JMC
  • Akshay Chauhan, a History student at Hindu College
  • Hemant Sangwan, pursuing a Bachelors in Physical Sciences with Chemistry at Deshbandhu College

The extempore was an amalgamation of facts and emotions ranging from capitalism to mental health.The Extempore was judged by:

  • Ajatshatru Singh Rawat, a BBA (Financial and Investment Analysis) student at SSCBS 
  • Mozaien Tak, an Economics and Philosophy student at Deshbandhu College
  • Saloni Singh, a third-year Economics major at Gargi College
  • Tejasvi Yadav, currently pursuing Mathematics Hons at Miranda House 

The  participants in Turncoat debate were challenged to speak both for and against the motion in Block-Tackle format, the turncoat debate judged their creativity while stimulating opinions.The Turncoat Debate was judged by:

  • Kaushitaki Sharma, former Vice-President of the DPS RKP Debating Society and a current member of the IPU Debating Society
  • Shefali Mehra, former president of the DPS RKP Economics Society
  • Ameya Chaturvedi, DPS RK Puram alumna who is currently studying psychology at Indraprastha College for women
  • Jatin Jha, former President of the DPS RKP Debating Society

A total of 8 schools qualified for the second part of the event: an Asian Style Parliamentary Debate. 

The motions put before the teams in the Quarter Finals were “The US abdication of leadership would bring about a detrimental change to world order” and “Rehabilitation should be the only consideration in a criminal sentencing.”

Following meticulous discussions, four  teams went on to compete in the Semi-Finals wherein the motions “The House supports the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories” and “The State should allow non-citizen migrants to vote in local elections” were presented to the debaters.

The Finals provided a much-awaited, breathtaking conclusion to the event, with two teams debating on the topic “The House believes that in cases of conflict, a nation’s self-interests should outweigh its international commitments to migrants” with intricate eloquence and zeal. All eleven adjudicators presided over the final debate.

The Closing Ceremony commenced with an address by the Presidents of the Debating Society, Sara Singh and Anushka Nijhawan, thanking the participating schools for joining in to commemorate the loving memory of Dhruv Rajgarhia.

In her address , the Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal, thanked the judges, participants, and the Rajgarhia family. She spoke of how things change, yet sentimentality lingers on; and that being sentimental is not a weakness, but a paramount strength. Highlighting the importance of debating, she emphasized that it teaches us something for life – how to think on our feet – and that if a person is capable of such logical thought, they are miles ahead of where most of us are. She also thanked the members of the Debating Society and the teachers-in-charge for pulling together an admirably wonderful event, and lauded the judges for upholding the legacy and traditions of DPS RK Puram.

The room exuded exuberance as the judges, the Rajgarhia family, and the Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal, were invited on-stage for the prize distribution.
