Visit to Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust

The Social Service League of DPS,R.K.Puram organised an educational trip to Amar Jyoti School,Karakardoma on 14 Dec.219 in order to sensitize the students to the differently abled and to develop a better understanding of inclusive education. Seventeen students from class VI accompanied by two teachers visited the school. The students of Amar Jyoti School,with and without disabilities are encouraged to participate in integrated sports and cultural activities besides academics. The school empowers its students by imparting training in skill-development.(art & craft, cutting-tailoring,computer training, jute bag making, bead jewellery and beauty culture) it has been working relentlessly towards meaningful rehabilitation of children with disabilities.The students of DPS interacted with the students, played a friendly basket ball match with the differently abled who were on their special wheelchairs. . The children of Amar Jyoti School put up a spectacular dance performance, which was enjoyed by all.

TOPIC: RESPECT DIVERSITY AND MAKE UNITY!
C. JoyBell C. once said, “We are all equal in the fact that we are all different” and hence our strength lies not in our similarities but our differences and being tolerant.
Unity in Diversity promotes brotherhood, peace and harmony. It creates a sense of oneness among people. The children dedicated their assembly to Mahatma Gandhi, who endorsed these tenets. The students of class VI B beautifully presented their ideas on Unity by their performances which included self-composed poem , thoughts, choir and dances. They also celebrated the diversity of India with a presentation on the state of West Bengal. They beautifully depicted the vibrant colours of the state through song, speech and dance.

The Mathematical Crusade 2019, an inter-school Mathematics symposium, was hosted by Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram on 14th December, 2019. 23 schools participated in the event sponsored by PolyMaxx India. The occasion was graced by the chief guest Mr Sanjeev Narang, Managing Director at Versatile Bonds Private Limited

 

The symposium served as a meeting ground for like-minded Mathematics enthusiasts and let them understand, use and appreciate Mathematics better in their day to day lives.

The events for the day were ‘Mathematics Quiz’, ‘Symphonies of Mathematics’, ‘Model Making’ and ‘Surprise Event’.

 

Mr. Anil Kathuria, Head of the Mathematics Department, Ms. S.K. Nagalakshmi and Ms. Tandeep Kaur, Ms. Shalini Monga, Ms. Ruby Bhattacharya, along with the Mathematics Department and students of the Mathematical Society, organized the event.

Model making required the participants to make a model on any Mathematical concept, thereby displaying their Mathematical aptitude, understanding and an innate sense of innovation. The event was judged by Dr(Mr) Raj Kumar, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Kirori Mal College; Mr Ayush Venkatesh, DPS RK Puram alumnus (2017 batch) who is pursuing chemical engineering in IIT Delhi, and Ms Neeranjani Saxena also an alumnus (2018 batch) who is presently pursuing Economics Hons. from St Stephen’s. 

The Mathematical Quiz, conducted in two rounds, was a test of sharp thinking, logic and problem solving skills. In the prelims, students solved questions pertaining  to crossword trivia and logical reasoning. Participants flaunted their Mathematical acumen in order to win the nail biting close final round, which included four sub-rounds of math trivia, logical reasoning, the buzzer round and rapid fire. The event was presided over by members of the MatSoc. 

 

Symphonies of Mathematics presented an opportunity to the participants to bring together their love of music and Mathematics. The mathematically inspired performances captivated the attention of the judges for the event.  The event was judged by Mrs Arunima Das Gupta, former Senior Mathematics teacher at DPS RK Puram, and Mr Saksham Arora (alumnus from 2017 batch), a student at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, United States. 

 

The Surprise Event consisted of three different rounds. Round 1 was a test of general mathematical questions and puzzles, and 14 teams out of 20 qualified for the 2nd round which judged the students in their ability to answer time-bound questions displayed on a projector. 5 teams qualified for the final round, also called the Code Breaker, where participants were asked to create a secret language using codes. 

 

The valedictory commenced with the Principal Ms Vanita Sehgal felicitating the Chief Guest, Mr Sanjeev Narang. Following it was a performance by the winning team of Symphonies of Mathematics, wherein they used rhythmic music, rap and animated actions to encapsulate the mysterious and magical concept of a ‘circle’. Their performance induced hearty laughter and loud applause from the audience. 

In her address, the Principal began by stating how she felt that it was common in  many school students to drop Mathematics the moment they were given a chance to choose their subjects. However, life, according to her, did not become easier without  mathematics , but on the contrary: mathematics made life easier. She emphasised on the importance of maths being a subject that was the very basis of every activity we undertake in life. She further expressed her appreciation towards the hardworking mathematics department and its diligent, creative students. She concluded by saying that it is unimportant to win; but what really matters is what one  learns. 

 

The annual Mathematics magazine of the school, Mathyard 2019, was formally released by the Principal Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Mr. Sanjeev Narang and the Head of the Mathematics Department Mr. Anil Kathuria and  the teachers of the Mathematics Department.. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr. Anil Kathuria, Head of the Mathematics Department, who congratulated the winners, participants and the MatSoc club members for their diligent and enthusiastic attitude towards conducting the event. He also thanked the members of the mathematics department  for their efforts. The event concluded with the national anthem.

India Fest 2019

“Social science means inventing a brand of human we can understand.” – Nassim Nicholas Taleb


India Fest ‘19 was organised by the Social Science Department of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram on 14 December 2019, with an aim to showcase talent and artistic creativity from across schools of Delhi NCR as well as from outside the state. A total of 18 schools participated in a wide range of activities on the theme, ‘Celebrating the journey of Gandhi from Mohan to Bapu on his 150th Birth Anniversary’. The event was coordinated by teachers of the social science department with Ms Padma Srinivasan, the Vice Principal, as the Overall Incharge.


Express… Through Wall Art saw the participants using their powers of embellishment to create graffiti that breathes life and opinion, highlighting current societal issues with a message upholding Gandhian values. This event was judged by Pankaj Guru and Karan Kalra on the basis of their originality in the expression of ideas, creativity, and content. 


‘Therukoothu’…a Stage Theatre Presentation ignited sparks of questions and reason, illustrating harsh truth through satire, comedy and pun. This event brought to the participants a stage to showcase their views on current issues and compel the audience to think and introspect. The masterful dramatists exhibited their perceptions of issues related to adolescence, gender equality, pollution, global warming, Fit India and Gandhiji’s ideals.  The event was judged by Kakoli Gaur and Prince Nagpal, both of whom are young theatre artists. 


The India Quiz sought to inculcate a sense of pride on the contributions made by fighters of the Indian National Movement under the leadership of Gandhiji, for freeing our nation from the British rule. The three rounds tested the participants’ knowledge on historical facts and trivia relating to the exemplary movements carried out in the quest for national freedom.  


Legal Labyrinth…a Moot Court Competition saw budding legal enthusiasts simulate extensive court proceedings and present their cases on the themes of the Indian Model of Secularism, Judicial Activism and Indian Democracy, the Struggle for Human Rights, and Equality Delights in Equality. The teams were judged on the basis of their knowledge and application of facts, the presentation of issues and their communication ability, application of legal principles, authorities and precedents, advocacy skills, court craft and demeanor. The judges included Dheeraj Pratap Deo, a Senior Associate at Karanjawala & Company, and Aishwarya Mohapatra, an alumnus of DPS RKPuram (2010 batch) and an Advocate practising in Delhi High Court, Trial Courts, Tribunals and Authorities. 


Reality to the Reel was a movie making competition which brought history alive on the screen. The movies were engaging as well as informative. 


Kavyanjali, the collage making( off site) competition, 

required students to present their ideas cohesively in form of a collage. The resulting collages were absolutely breathtaking.


The Valedictory ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp along with a melodious Ganesh Shlok by the school choir, followed by the rendition of the patriotic song ‘Madhumay Desh Hamara’. It was followed by a group of talented students who presented a spectacular dance-drama on Gandhi, highlighting his vision and its relevance in the present society. 

The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal said that  we talk about Gandhi Ji and even quote him, but most of us ignore his teachings and principles, although they are directly applicable to our lives. She talked about how although science takes the world forward, history forms its backbone and gives us the culture which enriches our lives.


The much awaited Prize Distribution was followed by the vote of thanks delivered by the Vice Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan


The event concluded with the national anthem.

Topic: An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching

This quote by the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi represents the importance  of hard work and determination, to achieve success in the long run.“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching”. Practicing anything on a regular basis indicates one’s intellectual and aesthetic abilities. It makes a man perfect as it brings perfection which leads a man towards achieving excellence in a particular subject or field. Action performed with proper planning and regular practice leads a person towards perfection.These ideals and values were depicted through the assembly of class IX M and N. The students put up a yoga performance, thoughts, speech, poetry, music, dance and a special skit which captured the essence of these values. They also showcased the beauty of West Bengal through a short presentation.

Topic: Gratitude

The students of VI –D beautifully presented their thoughts on being appreciative and grateful. They dedicated their assembly to Mahatma Gandhi, who endorsed these tenets. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships. It helps one refocus on what they have instead of what they lack. They Students also emphasized the ways in which one can express their gratitude as a life filled with gratitude is filled with happiness. The students celebrated the diversity of India with a presentation on the state of Rajasthan. They beautifully depicted the vibrant colours of the state through poetry, speech and dance.

Topic – ‘Music and its Influence in Our lives’

Music has an everlasting effect on our heart and mind. It helps explore our emotions that have a great role in our lives.Good music has the power to uplift a sad soul.  The students of class VII E & F beautifully rendered this idea by their performances which included poetry, speech, thoughts, choir and dances. They dedicated a soulful song to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, along with their views on Gandhian Philosophy. The state chosen by them was Rajasthan, which they showcased through a small presentation and a state dance to highlight the rich cultural heritage of India.The main aim of the assembly was to highlight the importance of music in our lives.

Felicitation of our Principal with the 2019 Global Human Rights Protection Award

On the occasion of the 20th World Human Rights Day, the Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal was felicitated with the prestigious 2019 Global Human Rights Protection Award at the 20th Human Rights Congress organized by the Indian Institute of Human Rights at India International Centre on 10 December 2019. The award was received on her behalf by Ms Rupa Das and Dr. Atika Dayal, Heads of the Department of Geography and English respectively along with four students.

The Human Rights Congress was presided over by Dr Rahul Rai, Director of the  Indian Institute of Human Rights. The award was also conferred on Mrs Judith K K Kan’goma- Kapijimpanga High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia; Major General Mr Chris Sunday Eze (Rtd.) High Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and Mr Amadou Ndene Ndoye, Minister Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Senegal and Principals from other schools. In their acceptance speeches, the human rights dignitaries emphasised on the strong link between democracy and human rights, stating how the two are interconnected and went hand in hand. They highlighted the need to eradicate stereotypes and bring in a new paradigm of equality for all, regardless of race, religion or socio-economic status.

Topic: Human Rights and Responsibilities

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more.  Everyone is entitled to these rights, everywhere and at every time without discrimination.

We, as the holders of human rights and fundamental freedoms, all individuals and communities, have the duty and responsibility to respect those of others. Today, we the students of class VI-H, through a series of roleplay’s, music and dance want to re-emphasize the importance of the human rights and our responsibilities and duty to strive for the promotion and observance thereof.

Value of the month for December 2019

“Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts”. With this pious view the students of classes VI-VIII decorated the soft boards of their classes on ‘Christmas- a virtue of sharing and caring.’ The boards were decorated with colourful socks and images of gifts. Each corner of the board had a Santa Claus with his huge bag of overflowing gifts teaching the children to learn to share and be kind in times of need. The students even put in their imagination to work by adding cotton on the way to Santa’s sledge to give the effect of snow and the chilling atmosphere.
