Interactive Session with TOI: Surveying the NIE Children’s Newspaper

The Times of India (TOI) conducted an interactive session at DPS RK PURAM on 20 December 2024 to gather feedback on their NIE Children’s Newspaper. The session aimed to understand student preferences, suggestions, and areas of improvement for making the newspaper more engaging and informative for young readers.

The TOI representatives elicited responses from students on varied topics in order to understand the relevance of the content in the newspaper and the interest level among students. Many students shared their views on the articles published, offering suggestions for making them more relatable and student-focused.

In addition to the articles, the session also addressed the visual appeal of the newspaper. Students were asked for feedback on the images accompanying the articles, the layout, and the size of the text. The representatives also proposed adding new sections to cater to diverse interests. Some of the ideas floated included:

  1. Sports Zone – Updates and fun facts about popular sports and athletes.
  2. Tech Trends – Introducing young readers to new technologies and innovations.
  3. Creative Corner – A space for students to submit their own stories, poems, or artwork.
  4. Career Guidance – Short articles on different career options and skills required.

Students enthusiastically participated in the discussion, with several expressing their excitement about these potential additions. Suggestions to add a ‘Student Spotlight’ section, featuring achievements of young readers, and a ‘Puzzle and Games’ page were also made.

The interactive session was not only a platform for feedback but also an engaging discussion about the importance of journalism in shaping young minds. TOI’s efforts to involve students in this initiative demonstrate their commitment to creating a newspaper that is truly for and by the youth. The survey results and suggestions will undoubtedly help the NIE Children’s Newspaper evolve into a publication that informs, inspires, and entertains.
