DPS RK PURAM STUDENTS DEVELOP APNA PRAHARI
DPS RK PURAM STUDENTS DEVELOP APNA PRAHARI: A SMART AQI MONITORING AND LPG LEAKAGE PREVENTION SYSTEM
TEST THE EFFICACY OF INDOOR AIR-PURIFYING PLANTS
Encouraged by the Principal, Mr Anil Kumar, DPS RK Puram Class X students Jap Malhotra & Vani Menon, under the mentorship of Ms Niva Chhonkar, HoD Biology, developed a ‘Apna Prahari’ ‘अपना प्रहरी’: A PORTABLE POLLUTION PROBE to track the air quality (AQI), especially Indoor Air Quality, along with temperature and humidity.
Many people are unaware of the air they breathe every day, whether indoors, be it at home, school, office or outdoors. This project focused on designing a device that can detect air pollution levels in real time, using different types of sensors. It helps people monitor harmful gases and particulate matter, and take steps to protect their health
Indoor pollution occurs when the air inside homes, offices, schools, or other enclosed spaces becomes polluted. It can cause health issues such as breathing problems, allergies, headaches, and respiratory diseases.LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), carbon monoxide (CO), and ammonia (NH₃) are significant contributors to indoor air pollution and pose health risks if not managed properly.
The Main Causes are Smoking, Cooking smoke, Chemicals from cleaning products, Poor ventilation, Dust, mould, and pollen. Indoor air pollution contains harmful chemicals that come from everyday activities and building materials.
Common Indoor Chemical Pollutants include:
- Carbon Monoxide (CO): Produced by gas stoves, heaters, and tobacco smoke. It prevents oxygen from reaching body tissues.
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Found in paints, cleaning products, air fresheners, and adhesives. They can cause irritation, headaches, or long-term health issues.
- Formaldehyde: Present in pressed wood products, furniture, and some fabrics. It can trigger allergies and respiratory problems.
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂): Released from gas appliances and combustion. It affects lung function.
- Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Dust, pollen, mould spores, and fibres that cause breathing problems and allergies.
Incomplete combustion of LPG leads to the release of harmful gases like CO.which is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas. It accumulates in closed spaces and is highly toxic.
This project aimed to design a Smart Air Quality Monitoring Device, which detects indoor AQI in real time, alerts users through mobile/PC, and prevents fire damage by sensing LPG leakage and triggering an alarm. The efficacy of indoor air purification using selected plants: Feather Palm, Money Plant, Chlorophytum (Spider Plant), Sansevieria (Snake Plant). It was proven that Indoor plants play a significant role in improving air quality by absorbing harmful gases and increasing oxygen content.
| Plant | Scientific Name | Pollutant absorbed |
| Feather Palm | Dypsis lutescens | Formaldehyde, Xylene, Toluene |
| Money Plant | Epipremnum aureum | VOCs, benzene, CO,toluene |
| Spider Plant | Chlorophytum comosum | Carbon monoxide, xylene |
| Snake Plant | Sansevieria trifasciata | Carbon dioxide & formaldehyde |

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” — Plutarch
Delhi Public School, RK Puram hosted the Class VII Scholar Badge Ceremony for the academic session 2024–25 on 4th December 2025 in the Audio-Visual Hall, celebrating the academic and co-curricular achievements of students.
The esteemed Chief Guest for the event was Dr Jitendra Nagpal, a renowned psychiatrist with over twenty years of experience across leading hospitals in India.
The event began with the auspicious lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Chief Guest, Dr Jitendra Nagpal; the Principal, Mr Anil Kumar; the Vice Principals: Mr Anil Kathuria, Mr Mukesh Kumar, Mr Naresh Miglani and Ms Rashmi Malhotra and the Headmistress, Dr Anubha Gopal.
Inspired by the theme of ‘Music is the universal language of mankind’, the programme commenced with a harmonious performance by the Indian Orchestra, filling the auditorium with a rich, vibrant energy that welcomed the audience into the spirit of celebration. Thereafter, a soulful and rhythmic rendition of the song ‘Hawao ka samjho ishara’ was presented by the young students of Class VII, spreading awareness about global issues like excessive pollution. This was followed by an exquisite dance performance as a tribute to Mother Earth which enthralled the audience.
In his address, the Principal, Mr Anil Kumar, welcomed the honoured Chief Guest, Dr Jitendra Nagpal as well as the proud parents of the students receiving the awards and thanked them for gracing the occasion. He lauded the achievements of the Chief Guest, a pioneer of mental health in the country and spoke about the three H’s – the Head, the Heart and the Hand, which emphasise the importance of holistic wholesome development, highlighting both physical and mental well-being. He also quoted Dr Harivanshrai Bachchan – ‘If it is according to your wish, then it is good, if not, then it is even better’ as it is the wish of the almighty and it helps us to realise our potential.
Thereafter, the much-awaited Scholar Badge Ceremony was conducted by the Class VII representatives: Ms Mahima Goel and Ms Bhumika Singh. This year, a remarkable number of students received recognition for their unwavering dedication – an affirmation of the countless hours of learning, participation and growth which is reflected through their outstanding achievements in scholastic and co-scholastic areas. A total number of 226 awards were presented, including 146 Second Green Badges for continued academic excellence for two consecutive years, 77 First Green Badges, 7 Gold Medals for 100% attendance, one Red Blazer, 7 Pins and 14 Certificates for sports and co-curricular achievements.
