Delhi Public School R.K. Puram hosted an intellectually stimulating guest lecture on 7 July 2026, focusing on the intersection of biological phenomena and advanced engineering principles. An initiative by the College Advisory Team to explore careers in Engineering, the session was delivered by Dr Sandeep Saha, Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. The presentation was held in the studio and attended by the students of Class XII, offering them a unique opportunity to engage with high-level academic research.
The primary focus of Dr Saha’s lecture was the extraordinary migratory behaviour of the Pantala flavescens, commonly known as the Globe Skimmer dragonfly. This minute insect achieves what appears to be an aerodynamic impossibility by completing a multi-generational migration exceeding 16,000 kilometers between India and Africa. Characterized as a ‘marathon in the sky’, this natural wonder serves as a baseline for challenging contemporary scientific assumptions regarding endurance, biological scale and complex navigation systems across vast geographical expanses.
A key highlight of the discourse was the interdisciplinary methodology which bridged the gap between ecology and advanced aerospace engineering. Dr Saha explained how researchers combined rigorous ecological fieldwork with sophisticated path-planning algorithms typically reserved for aerospace design. The findings revealed that these dragonflies possess a remarkable capacity to interpret environmental cues, allowing them to skillfully exploit global weather patterns—such as riding the high-velocity Somali Jet stream—and strategically navigate island networks like the Maldives.
The session concluded by highlighting the broader academic significance of such research. For the participating students, the lecture transcended conventional biology and physics curricula, demonstrating how collaborative, interdisciplinary inquiry can unravel the complexities of the natural world. This event aligns with the ongoing commitment of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram to foster innovation, cultivate deep critical thinking and inspire future scientists to explore sophisticated, multi-domain questions.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, observed on 5 June 2026 with the theme “Climate Action”, the Eco Club of DPS R.K. Puram organised a Tree Plantation Drive under the national initiative “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”. The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness, people-driven climate action, and a sense of responsibility towards nature among students and the community.
The plantation drive was conducted at the identified site in the school’s Sports Complex. A total of 10 saplings were planted by the Principal, Vice Principal, students, teachers, parents and non-teaching staff. The saplings included Cardamom, Amla, Mango, Chikoo, Tej Patta and other native plant species that contribute to biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from all stakeholders, ensuring meaningful community involvement. Parents actively participated in the programme and shared their valuable knowledge and experiences related to environmental conservation and sustainable living. Their presence strengthened the spirit of collective responsibility towards protecting the environment.
Addressing the gathering, the Principal, Mr Anil Kumar, emphasised the importance of nurturing nature and fostering environmental consciousness among young learners. He encouraged students to become responsible citizens and active contributors to a greener future.
The Vice Principal, Mr Mukesh Kumar, motivated everyone to extend the plantation initiative beyond the school campus and urged each participant to plant at least ten more trees in their respective localities.
The programme reflected the school’s motto, “Service Before Self,” and reinforced the message that collective action is essential to address climate challenges. Through this plantation drive, DPS R.K. Puram reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and inspired students to become champions of sustainable development. The event successfully concluded with the commitment of all participants to protect and nurture nature and continue contributing towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier planet.
