“The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more things that you learn, the more places you will go.” – Dr. Seuss

The English Department at Delhi Public School RK Puram celebrated the 26th National Reading Day on Saturday, 19 June 2021. Keeping in mind the spirit of reading books and encouraging the same amongst students, an array of competitions were organised on this day.

Further on, a number of reading activities were conducted considering the emphasis laid by the National Education Policy 2020 on ‘how to read’, ‘learn to read’, ‘read to learn’. These activities continued for a month, from 19 June 2021 to 18 July 2021, to honour the father of the Library Movement, the late P.N. Panicker and realise his dream to promote the culture of reading.

Reading Day, Reading Week and Reading Month were celebrated to realise the objectives of Reading Mission 2022.  It was on 19 June 2017 when the Hon’ble Prime Minister launched the 22nd National Reading Month Celebrations and propagated  the message of ‘Read and Grow’ among the citizens.

The details of the events and the activities conducted at the school level are as follows:

Grade VI organised ‘On Reading My Favourite Book’ to let the students write a letter to the author of their favourite book, discussing their favourite scene in the story, talking about its theme and characters and expressing their gratitude. ‘Book Tech’ was conducted to present the digital elaboration of their favourite books. Students prepared beautiful powerpoint presentations which elaborated upon the theme, setting, characters and biography of the author.  In ‘Poetry In Motion’ students exhibited their poetry recitations via recorded videos.

Grade VII conducted ‘Thank You, Dear Author’, a virtual letter writing competition on the National Reading Day.  The participants were supposed to choose their favourite book and write a letter to its author stating the reasons behind liking the book, discussing its characters, theme, style of writing and favourite scenes.  They were allowed to illustrate the handwritten letter or add pictures related to the book.  On the day of the event, they read out their letters with proper expressions and intonation. A host of activities were conducted in the next few weeks:

The following activities were conducted in the next few weeks:

‘Book Cover Design Competition’ in which students derived a relatable title from a list of given proverbs. Adding illustrations and hues to the book cover helped to convey the theme or the purpose of the given cues using eloquent imagery. It helped in comprehension of the message conveyed in the proverbs. ‘I Am Shakespeare’ aimed at helping students to read and recite Shakespeare’s work. Students participated actively in this Soliloquy/Monologue Delivery Competition.  They recorded a soliloquy or a monologue from a Shakespearean play of their choice and uploaded it in the Google Classroom. ‘Graphic Novel’ was conducted in which students were supposed to create a graphic novel (comic strip) involving any part of the story, event or sequence drawn in series. The drawing could be digital or hand drawn mentioning the name of the book, its author and part of the script. ‘Caricature Making Competition’ required students to draw or create a caricature of any character from a book of their choice.  It could be digital or hand drawn mentioning the name of the book, the selected character and its famous dialogue or monologue.

Those involved in the events were oriented to new books, writers and styles of writing. It was a fun filled month when the book world came alive and left a great impact on the minds of both the teachers and the students.

INDEPENDENCE DAY ’21

“Where the mind is led forward by thee, into ever widening thought and action.
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake!”
  – Rabindranath Tagore

True stories of valour are not forgotten, they stay immortal in our hearts and in the pages of history. On 15 August 2021, Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram organised a virtual programme to celebrate 75 glorious years of India’s independence. One could witness students brimming with patriotic fervour and pride in their motherland as they presented powerful performances. The bleak circumstances did not hinder the jubilance in the atmosphere as the school made the best efforts to organise a spectacular online celebration in which students could display their talents.

The programme began with an instrumental performance by the talented students of the Western Music Society, which consisted of a medley of patriotic songs and helped instill a feeling of nationalism.

The Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan, wished everyone a very happy Independence Day and

spoke in remembrance of the great freedom fighters who fought for the independence of India we live in today. She emphasised the great sacrifice they made and encouraged students to work hard towards the development of the nation and acknowledge the privilege they hold. She concluded by emphasising that we should give to the nation all that we have and the best that we can.

Following this, students recounted tales of valour and talked about the courage and determination shown by various freedom fighters in an account of the Indian freedom struggle.. They emphasised the importance of continuing to work for the betterment of our nation.

The Vice Principal, Mr. Naresh Miglani emphasised the good fortune we have in living in an independent country and having fundamental rights. He said that no nation is perfect but must be made perfect by its citizens. For this, he said, we should work hard, fulfill our duties and be sincere in all our tasks.

This was followed by the much-awaited dance performance, where students enthusiastically presented power packed dances to the tunes of patriotic songs.

The Vice Principal, Mr. Anil Kathuria greeted all the viewers and said that for one to be free at heart, they must fulfill their responsibilities. He spoke of the colours  of our national flag. Saffron symbolises the courage and strength the people of the country have shown in the past one and a half years, especially the medical support staff. The white band indicates peace and green, fertility and auspiciousness. He reiterated his hopes for a normal world.

The Expressions Theatre Club presented an inspiring sketch about the responsibilities that come with freedom. School appointees pledged to uphold the freedom of the country and talked about what freedom means to them. Following this was a beautiful musical medley where students created an atmosphere of patriotic fervour through their melodious voices.

The Headmistress, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra showed her appreciation for the Olympians who won India’s best medal tally . According to her, the collective national pride in this feat united all Indians and made for a very fruitful and jovial 75th Independence Day.
In her concluding address, the Vice Principal, Ms. Renu Nayar threw light on the many achievements of India. She also addressed its many shortcomings and motivated the pupils, the future of the nation, to work towards remedying those.

The Digital Excellence society or DIGEX, is Delhi Public School R.K.puram’s photography and filmmaking society. The Digex Society hosted the most awaited annual event, Digex 2021, on 18 July 2021. This extraordinary event served as a medium of self expression for all its participants. Students from all over the country came together to compete and showcase their talent in fields such as photography, filmmaking, photo-manipulation and more. Garnering a participation of over 900 students from close to  200 schools, the annual Digex fest was hosted on a strictly virtual platform due to the restrictions by the global pandemic.  The event came to fruition with the support of the sponsors, OAASE Learning Studio, IvyAchievement and LaBREZZA.

The event and the members of the club received constant and unwavering support from the Principal, Ms Padma Srinivasan. She wished the participants the best of luck and through her words, encouraged creativity and hard work.

This year’s event consisted of 7 different categories- Pixelate Senior, Pixelate Junior, CreADive, Rendered, Surprise, Hi-Res  and Camistic.

Pixelate Senior- This category of the event is the online photography contest. Mainly for classes XI and XII , this category provided a platform for students to showcase their skills and creativity through their submission. This category was judged by one of India’s top photographers Mr. Vineet Vohra. Mr. Vohra is an inspiration and a role model for all participants. This year’s topic was ‘Distortion’.

Pixelate junior- Piexalte junior is the online photography contest that  encourages the budding photographers of classes IX and X to give their best, be original and learn more about photography. Judged by a Renowned photographer, Mr. Virendra Adhikari, this category received a large participation and students had to submit their entries on the topic ‘Speed’.

CreADive- CreADive is the On-spot online Advertisement making competition. Students from classes IX-XII can participate and create a captivating visual sequence of 30-40 seconds. Judged by the club’s alumni Vaidurya Nath, the participants had to create an advertisement for ‘sugar’.

Camistic- Camistic is the online ‘story-board’ event. Camistic was the biggest category this year with over 200 students taking part in it. This year, the stories were on the topic ‘rewind’ and the judging was done by a former member Rahul Bouri.

Rendered- Rendered is the newest addition to the Digex Annual event. Rendered is a photo-manipulation related category where participants make a creative piece from scratch on a given topic. This year’s topic was ‘Past//Future’. The participants had to incorporate elements from the past and the future into one entry.

This category was judged by Divyaanshi Chauhaan who is also a former member of the club.

Hi-RES- Hi-RES is the only category of the event that was not held on the spot. It is the online short-film making category where participants formulate a team of 4 students to create a cinematic masterpiece in 4-6 minutes. The films were judged by an alumni  of the club, Abhijay Bhandari and all entries were made on the topic ‘Reversed Roles’.

SURPRISE- The surprise category of the event is perhaps the most endearing category of them all. Participants do not know what their entry will be on until the time for submission begins and the possibilities can range from components of photography, to filmmaking, and more ! This year, the participants had to submit their entries on ‘Light Painting’ which is a type of photography. This category was judged by the former president of the Digex Society, Veronica Mathur.
