Guest Speaker Programme on “Fundamentals of Procreation: Development of Human Reproductive Organs”

The Biology department of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram organised a Virtual Guest Speaker Programme on the topic “Fundamentals of Procreation: Development of Human Reproductive Organs” on May 28, 2021 for the biology students of class XII, pertaining to their CBSE curriculum

The session was conducted by  Dr. Perumal Jayraj,He is currently working as an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at Sri Venkateswara college, University of Delhi. Having completed a Ph.D in Cancer Biology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, his research areas include treatment of malignant ocular tumours and skin carcinomas by identification of potential cancer biomarkers. He has been bestowed with many  prestigious awards such as Best Ph.D Research Fellow by Ophthalmic Research Association, Dr. R.P Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences 

The session began with a warm welcome extended to our eminent guest by our Vice Principal , Dr. Renu Nayyar. During the session, Dr. Jayraj talked about various interesting topics related to human reproductive organs such as gamete formation from precursor cells, significance of SRY gene and  genital ridges, which are essential components of this session’s academic curriculum as well, thus providing helpful exposure to students.This was all explained in a simple, and eloquent manner by Dr. Jayraj with the help of well presented illustrations

The presentation was followed by a question and answer session where Dr. Perumal Jayraj explained all the doubts effectively. Overall it was an extremely useful and educative session which provided better understanding of the concepts to the students

The session concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Ms. Niva Chhonkar, Head of the Biology,Department, Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram. The session was organised by Ms. Kajal Sethi who extended her gratitude to our guest for gracing us with his presence.

A Heartfelt farewell to Shri RS Lugani

“It’s so hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember”

On 22 May 2021 Sh. Ram Sarup Lugani, the first Headmaster and Principal of Delhi Public School  R K Puram left for the heavenly abode.

Sh. R.S Lugani, the name that revolutionised the education sector with strong grit and determination. We all know him as the mathematical expert who could solve the difficult equations of life with the right formula and help reach the right answer.

Born on 25th January, 1927 at Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Shri Ram Sarup Lugani completed his M.A. in Mathematics and later attained BT DPE, B.Ed. from Punjab and Agra University and   acquired teaching and administration experience at Manchester Grammar School, UK. 

 Sh. R. S. Lugani is acknowledged by one and  all as a legend in the field of education .

He was awarded the National Science Foundation Scholarship in 1963-64 to further his education in the University of Washington. He travelled to USA, UK, West Germany, France and Russia and visited the schools therein.He was invited as a visiting lecturer at Manchester Grammar School, one of the top academic schools in 1970-71. At that time,he was the Vice Principal of DPS Mathura Road. 

Soon after ,he took over as the Principal of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram in 1978 .From then onwards,he relentlessly took up the task of laying the foundation of an institution committed towards providing high quality education to the  Indian community .  In  these years he steered and led the school to become a pace setter and be recognized as the top most school in the city and the country.

 He won the Delhi State Award for Education in the year 1982 and the National Award for Teachers in 1985. He received the Padma Shri Award in 1992 from the then President of India, Shri R. Venkatraman.

DPS RK Puram  fraternity fondly and with great reverence remembers him as our mentor,a father figure who was a strict disciplinarian and taskmaster and at the same ,a well meaning and an affectionate human.

Today DPS RK puram stands a class apart from all others only beacuse our founder Principal right from the outset,with his far reaching vision, raised the bar to the highest levels. He was indeed a pioneer who not only nurtured and served the institution with utmost commitment and dedication, but also inspired all those who worked with him to follow his footprints with the same enthusiasm and vigour.

 A Walk Down Memory Lane

“MYTHS SURROUNDING COVID 19 AND ITS MANAGEMENT”.

The outbreak of the COVID 19 has given rise to a multitude of remedial measures, proven or otherwise, myths are abundant , advice is free. To dispel some of these myths, to disclose the scientific bases and to talk about managing the various misconceptions and hypotheses, The Biology Department of Delhi Public School R.K.Puram, organized a virtual Guest Speaker Programme on the topic “ “Myths surrounding Covid 19 and its Management”. 

Dr Sujata Sharma, professor at the Department of Biophysics , AIIMS, New Delhi, was the Guest speaker. 

This programme was organized on May 24, 2021, for the students of classes IX-X.

The Headmistress Ms Rashmi Malhotra welcomed the distinguished speaker  and spoke of how the world is facing challenging times and hence the need of such programmes.

Dr. Sujata Sharma spoke about the structure of the coronavirus , the various vaccines and their principle of working . She  then went on to speak in detail about the common myths floating around on social media and the scientific approach to them. Her presentation was followed by a question and answer session where she patiently answered the questions put forth by both students and staff members.

The Vote of Thanks was extended by the Head of Department, Ms. Niva Chhonkar.

The programme was organized by Ms. Reema Khosla and Ms. Sushma Sardana.

Guest Speaker Programme on “Step-by-Step Guidelines on managing Covid-19 at Home.”

Delhi Public School,R.K.Puram organised a Virtual Guest Speaker Programme on May 24, 2021 from 4:00pm-5:00 pm for the students of classes VI-XII. The speaker for the event was Dr. Shuchin Bajaj, an alumnus of Delhi Public School,R.K.Puram. Dr.Bajaj is the Founder-Director of Ujala Cygnus Hospitals. He is a highly qualified medical scholar and a recipient of Chevening Gurukul Fellowship at King’s College,London and IHT Fellow at INSEAD,France.The event was held on the Zoom Platform and addressed the very important topic of “Step-by-Step Guidelines on managing Covid-19 at Home.”

The programme began with the virtual felicitation of Dr. Bajaj followed by a short video of Dr.Shuchin’s medical life and ventures. Ensuing was an address by the Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan and a  20-minute talk by Dr.Bajaj in which he gave a brief overview of Covid-19 management and symptoms, guidelines for self-isolation and precautions to be taken by other family members;detailed information on Black Fungus i.e. mucormycosis and spoke about his frontline Covid duties along with the opening of a free 1000 bed Covid Care facility in New Delhi. 

The presentation was followed by the Question & Answer segment in which many questions were put forth by the students to Dr.Bajaj and his clarifications on certain myths surrounding Covid-19 treatment like increase in oxygen level by using camphor and ajwain and information on immunity-building at home and the tipping point of Covid-19 self-isolation i.e. when to hospitalise an infected person were sought. Students from all classes participated enthusiastically.

After the Question & Answer session, the gathering was addressed by the Vice Principal, Dr. Renu Nayar who thanked and appreciated Dr.Bajaj for giving us clarity on the Covid-19 management at home and removing our apprehensions. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Headmistress, Mrs. Rashmi Malhotra who expressed gratitude to Dr.Bajaj on behalf of everyone for conducting the session and helping us get a clear guideline to follow while in isolation and otherwise,during these harrowing times.

GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAM 21-MAY-2021

Delhi Public School R.K. Puram organised a Guest Speaker Programme on the topic “Citizens- Their fundamental rights and Citizenship” on 21 May 2021 for the students of classes VI-XII. 

The Guest speaker, Mr. Nikhil Palli,an alumnus of DPS RK Puram, is the Managing Partner of The Palli Law Firm. He worked as a Junior Counsel. He was also in service matters and equality of rights for women including permanent Commission for Women officers in the Delhi High Court and judgments nominated in top 5 judgments of the Delhi High Court in 2015 by Bar and Bench.

The Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan, Headmistress, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra, and the Class Representatives,Class teachers, and students of classes VI-XII attended the session. In her address the principal spoke about  how the alumni of our school have been enlightening and encouraging their juniors with their experiences and knowledge. 

During the webinar, Mr Palli shared the experience of taking law as a profession and enlightened us about constitutional law relating to the citizen’s Fundamental Duties, Rights and Citizenship Laws. One of the highlights of the session was Mr. Palli quoting Indira Gandhi when she said, “People tend to forget their Fundamental Duties, but always remember their rights”.

This was followed by a Question and Answer session where Mr Palli provided insightful answers to wide-ranging questions from the audience. He addressed a host of questions from students and teachers in the audience, replying while walking a fine balance between both the simplification needed for students without law, and keeping in mind the nuances of law one must not miss.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Headmistress, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra. The event was organised by Ms. Shelly Malhotra and Ms. Archna Deepak with technical support from Mr. Mukesh Kumar and his team.

हिंदी गेस्ट स्पीकर कार्यक्रम

दिल्ली पब्लिक स्कूल, रामकृष्ण पुरम के तत्वावधान में हिंदी विभाग द्वारा *हिंदी लेखन कौशल/सृजनात्मकता का विकास* विषय पर एक गेस्ट स्पीकर कार्यक्रम का आयोजन शनिवार, 15 मई 2021 को दोपहर  2:00 बजे किया गया।

इस अवसर पर प्रो. हरीश अरोड़ा तथा डॉ. विनोद प्रसून मुख्य वक्ता के रूप में आमंत्रित थे।

दोनों वक्ताओं का स्वागत करते हुए विद्यालय की प्रधानाचार्या सुश्री पद्मा श्रीनिवासन जी ने इस अवसर पर कहा कि विद्यार्थियों की रचनाधर्मिता को बढ़ावा देने हेतु इस प्रकार के कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाते रहने चाहिए।

महात्मा गांधी अंतरराष्ट्रीय हिंदी विश्वविद्यालय के दूरशिक्षा निदेशालय में प्रोफेसर और निदेशालय के निदेशक प्रो. हरीश अरोड़ा विगत 20 वर्षों से हिंदी साहित्य और पत्रकारिता में अध्यापन कर रहे हैं। इस अवसर पर बोलते हुए उन्होंने विद्यार्थियों की रचनाधर्मिता को बढ़ाने हेतु हिंदी साहित्य की प्रमुख विधाओं यथाकविता, कहानी, नाटक, तथा एकांकी इत्यादि के तत्वों पर प्रकाश डालते हुए विद्यार्थियों में इन विधाओं की  सृजनात्मकता को कैसे बढ़ाया जा सकता है पर अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किए।

व्याख्यान के अगले वक्ता डॉ. विनोद प्रसून थे जो  पिछले 28 वर्षों से अध्यापन व लेखन से जुड़े हैं और वर्तमान में दिल्ली पब्लिक स्कूल, ग्रेटर नोएडा में, हिंदी विभागाध्यक्ष के पद पर कार्यरत हैं तथा हिंदी संसाधक/विषय विशेषज्ञ के रूप में सीबीएसई एवं एनसीईआरटी से भी संबद्ध हैं। विद्यार्थियों में लेखन कौशल तथा सृजनात्मकता के विकास हेतु उन्होंने अध्यापकों की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका पर प्रकाश डाला और कहा कि इस आपतकाल में अध्यापक विद्यार्थियों की रचनाधर्मिता को बढ़ावा देने हेतु यथोचित योगदान कर सकते हैं।

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAMME – GENDER SENSITISATION

    “It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing  ideals.”

The English Department of Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram organised a Guest Speaker Programme on Gender Sensitization for the students of classes X and XII on  22 May 2021. The Guest speaker was Dr. Amrita Shastry.

Dr.Amrita Sastry is a Professor of Sociology from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University.She has completed her Masters,M.Phil and PHD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her interest areas include Sociology of Education, Methodology of Social Sciences, Techniques of Social Research and Sociology of Environment.

Her inclusive approach during the session made the attendees question the concept of gender in their day- to- day life experiences.Her session covered the governing stereotypes prevalent in our progressive society that tend to make it regressive. She spoke about the role of family, peer groups, educational institutions and mass media in framing the ideology associated with various genders. She suggested that people should not be  passive recipients rather be inquisitive members who are rational in approach. 

She elucidated some of the traditionally expected roles and behavioural patterns based on socially identified norms.The videos and visuals presented during the session stirred thoughts that made the attendees think and reflect. As it stands today, gender roles at various places tend to bring forth the difference in approach. However it was heartening to learn that gender based differences are likely to diminish with time and advancement. 

The talk ended with a discussion on how  to bridge the gender gap and view things from a humanitarian perspective.

The head of the institution, Mrs Padma Srinivasan shared her thoughts and spoke about the importance of fostering gender sensitization at school level as it gives way to introspection and nurtures critical thinking. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Atika Dayal, who thanked Dr. Amrita Sastry for her valuable time and efforts.The staff members and students expressed their gratitude towards the speaker for an informative and fruitful session.

STORY TELLING SESSION FOR CLASSES VI-VIII

History department organised an online storytelling session for students of classes VI – VIII on 19th May 2021. Teachers from the Social Science and Hindi department, and theatre  enthusiasts attended the session. 

The session was compered by Ms Sapna Sharma. She warmly welcomed the distinguished guest speaker, Prof. Danish Iqbal, who combines in himself various roles of a performer, teacher, writer and media person. He is an exponent of Dastangoi, an Urdu story telling art form. His robust dramatic works have been emulated by many of his peers in the field. He has also been associated with the training and nurturing of actors and has been visiting faculty at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, National School of Drama and many other such institutions.He has also received many National Awards, including the prestigious ‘Ghalib Award (for Theatre)’, ‘Mohan Rakesh Samman’ and Lassa Kaul Award for Best Documentary on National Integration. 

Prof. Iqbal narrated stories from Jataka tales and Singhasan Battisi.This was followed by an interactive session with students and teachers which  was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present. 

Our esteemed Principal, Padma ma’am, thanked Prof. Iqbal for a light hearted session. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Shruti Talwar.

Digital Presentation on ‘Labour Day’ 

“Genius begins great works; labour alone finishes them”

The study of labor and the workforce; has always been an essential branch and component of sociology. Keeping in mind the significance and importance of labour , a digital presentation activity was organized for the Sociology students of Grade XII on 29th April, 2021. The students were asked to create a digital presentation using Google Slides. They were asked to research, weave in sociological concepts such as ‘Marxism’ and add a touch of individual subjectivity to their presentations, by displaying their thoughts on the same. The students created beautiful, vibrant and extremely dynamic presentations on the theme, displaying sociological sensitivity and commendable knowledge about the subject.

Psychology Club Summer Activity

“Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” 

The Psychology Club organised a virtual workshop on “Music Therapy” for the students of the club of class 12th (2021-2022) on 21 May 2021. 
 Ridhi Lohani (12U), Saachi Yaadav (12U), Elina Sadh (12T) and Devishi Mehra (12T) the Club appointees of the year 2020-2021 conducted the workshop. The session began with a small activity which helped the students realise how different kinds of music affected their mood and made them feel. A brief explanation of music therapy was given. It is the use of music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of a group or individual. The beneficial uses of listening to classical music was presented. The biological and psychological effects of music were also discussed. The workshop was brought to a close with a body movement exercise that included reaching out to the sky and bringing in positive energy towards ourselves. As the workshop ended, the students felt light hearted and less stressed than before. The session was very relaxing and knowledgeable for the students present.
