INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONS – TEAM INDUS-LUFT DYNAMICS, FROM AEROSS: THE AEROSPACE SOCIETY

Team Indus-Luft Dynamics, from Aeross: The Aerospace Society,participated in the 2022 edition of the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC). The team of  6 members: Aadil Faisal Saiyed XII-H (Team Leader/Design Engineer)

 bagged the 1st position in the National Round of this competition held in January. They then went onto the world stage, competed with 50+ teams from USA, China, Philippines, Canada, Kenya etc and placed 1st internationally to become the International Champions in April. 

The International round is usually held in Washington DC however due to Covid concerns it was held online this year. Indus-Luft Dynamics put their best foot forward with the C-25 ‘Sigma’ UAV, which is based on a vintage gyrodyne aircraft design. Some key highlights of the aircraft are its cutting-edge avionics, ducted propellers, distributed electric propulsion system and a low carbon footprint. Overall, the team was able to maximise efficiency in all aspects of their submission. Thus making their UAV the best solution to the challenge statement.

Each member of the team has been offered a $50,000 Scholarship from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University along with certificates and a trophy for the school. The team is grateful to the Principal Ms Padma Srinivasan , Mr. Ajay Goel (Physics Faculty), Mr. Robert Sprayberry (Federal Aviation Administration) and senior members of Aeross : Siddhansh Narang, Aryan Goel and Ahaan Sinha for their mentorship. Lastly, the team would also like to thank former members Raghav Chaudhary XII-J and Khushi Mishra XII-D for their contributions to the project in the National Round.

The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an international Aviation design challenge annually organised by the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The competition provides high-schoolers a platform to apply concepts learnt in the classroom to address real problems faced by industries, while working in a team environment. Teams are tested across multiple arenas: they must come up with a disruptive and feasible solution to a real world problem, learn to use industrial CAD/CAM and simulations softwares, engage with mentors employed in diverse STEM-related fields, and justify their design choices to prove their solution is practical and profitable enough to solve the task at hand.

In addition, they must also demonstrate proficiency in writing and convincingly presenting the value in their solutions, demonstrating industry level work ethic. 

The competition adjudges teams on both technical and soft skills, making it necessary for students to deploy efficient skill specialisation, time and work management and leadership. 

In recent years, the competition has focused on utilising Unmanned Aerial Systems to run a delivery service. Teams are tasked with designing UAVs capable of ferrying packages, creating a theory of operations, and developing a feasible business plan to commercially operate a fleet of such UAVs.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT MOCK DRILL (Fire Mock Drill)

18-19 April, 2022

A Disaster Management mock drill was conducted at DPS R.K.Puram, Delhi on 18th April 2022 for classes VI to X and on 19th April 2022 for class XII. 

It was organized in the school premises with the help of teachers and security guards under the guidance of the school Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan. The purpose of conducting the mock drill was to make the students and teachers acquainted with the exit route in a staggered way, following the COVID protocols. All the students present, participated in the drill.

The drill was carried out in a systematic manner, with the ringing of the fire alarm and announcement by the respective Vice Principal, Headmistress and Supervisor. The students were evacuated to their designated open assembly point as per the color coded evacuation plan. After the exercise, they went back to their classes and were again briefed about the route they need to follow in case of such an emergency. 

The guidelines provided by the DOE were strictly followed. Some areas of improvement have been identified after the debriefing session which would be considered for the next mock drill.

Overall it was a well executed drill coordinated by Disaster Management coordinator, Ms. Vinita Gupta along with all the team Incharges, their members and all other staff members of the school.

INTER-SECTION BIOLOGY COMPETITION

We know that creativity towards science puts things in context, sharpens details, and hones observations. The Intersection Biology Competition was organized by Inquisitio, the Biology Club in association with Plasmid, the Biotechnology Club. Its motive was to encourage children to involve art and creativity in a scientific concept. Students from Classes VI-XII submitted creative works in the form of essays, posters, collages, comic strips, and posters through a google form on the following topics-

KALANTAR 2021- ANNUAL NATIONAL ART COMPETITION 

The students of Expressions Theatre Club, Delhi Public School, R.K Puram participated in Kalantar 2021- Annual Art Festival (online), in the acting/drama/play competition organised by National Mission for Clean Ganga, Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with Kalantar Art Trust. The results were declared on 23rd January 2022. Aryan Mehra XI-Q, Garvita Singh XI-Q, Kalyani Wadehra XI-R, Myra Sahunja XI-C, Navyaa Mittal XI-T, Sara Sharma XI-S and Siya Abrol XI-P (Group Leader) performed a nukkad natak on the topic ‘Taki koi beghar na rahe’. They projected illegal dislocation of tenants, elderly abuse, child labour and proposed solutions for the same. They bagged the 3rd position in the national competition. The students of Expressions Theatre Club attended the award ceremony organised by the Kalantar trust for the 2021- 2022 Annual Art Festival on 17th April   Sunday at Siri Fort auditorium, where they received the award .The award was presented by the Chief Guest of the event- popular comedian and actor, Sri Raju Srivastava. Aryan Mehra(12Q), Garvita Singh(12Q), Kalyani Wadehra (12R), Myra Sahunja (12C), Navyaa Mittal (12T), Pranav Rajen (12K), Sara Sharma (12S), Siya Abrol (12P) and Vaibhav Mehra (12F) also presented an adaptation of the Shakespearen play- Anthony and Cleopatra at the event.

All India Children’s Educational Audio-Video Festival

The Central Institute of Educational Technology(CIET), NCERT hosted the 26th All India Children’s Educational Audio Video Festival in a hybrid mode on 31st March 2022 in order to promote creative expression amongst educational media professionals, teacher educators, trainee teachers, teachers and students. They received an enthusiastic response with a total of 750 entries from all over the country. The events consisted of 3 categories namely, audio, video and new media & ICT/ digital games. 

The event was judged by a panel of 11 jury members(Dr. O.P. Dewal, Dr. Ritu Rajput, Sh. R.S. Yadav, Sh. Amlanjyoti Majumdar, Dr. Anju Mehrotra, Dr. G.R. Syed, Sh. Nimish Kapoor, Sh. Pankaj Saxena, Dr. Vinod Kumar Kanvaria, Prof. Anubhuti Yadav, Dr. Gaurav Singh). 

The students from Expressions Theatre Club, DPS R.K. Puram received the award for the best actor category. The team consisted of Sambhav Soni, Rishabh Khanna, Jayeeta Shome, Shreyansh Jha and Siya Abrol along with teacher incharges Ms. Sanya Taneja and Ms. Sudeepta Chatterjee. The participants received cash prizes along with trophies and certificates. 

The organisers commended the efforts of the participants. 

The event concluded with the vote of thanks by the Joint Director of NCERT, Prof. Sridhar Srivastava and the Programme Coordinator, Dr. Abhay Kumar which was followed by the national anthem.

 CAMPAIGN FOR PHASING OUT SINGLE-USE PLASTIC

On the occasion of Earth Day on 22 April 2022, the Directorate of Education launched the campaign for ‘Phasing out Single-use Plastic’ in order to create awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics and to contribute towards creating a new, clean, healthy and plastic-free India.

Under the guidance of the esteemed Principal, Ms Padma Srinivasan, the students and teachers of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram enthusiastically participated in the launch of the campaign. The programme commenced with a Plantation Drive undertaken by the Principal,  Ms Padma Srinivasan, the Vice Principals, Ms Renu Nayar, Mr Naresh Miglani Mr Anil Kathuria and Mr JS Virdi, the Headmistress, Mrs Rashmi Malhotra the Supervisor of Classes VI-VIII,Ms Vinita Gupta, Activity Incharge Ms Abha Chona, Mrs Sushma Sardana, Incharge Environment Club, Ms Dimple Menon, Rep Class XI Mrs Kusum Yadav, Examination Incharge VI-VIII, Ms Reema Khosla. The Plantation drive was followed by a plethora of activities that were conducted on the school premises. The details of the activities are as follows:

CLASS VI:

A Poster Making activity was conducted for the students of Class VI on the theme ‘Eco-friendly Alternatives to Plastic’ wherein the students created beautiful posters with meaningful quotations based on the given theme. The students presented their versions of how the usage of single-use plastics can be minimised with sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives.

CLASS VII:

The students of Class VII participated in the Slogan Writing activity based on the theme ‘Phasing out Single-use Plastics’. The activity brought forth the creativity of the students wherein they wrote catchy and impactful slogans that would help in creating awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics on the environment. 

CLASS VIII:

The students of Class VIII participated in the Essay Writing activity on the topic ‘Strategy of 6 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Redesign and Remanufacture’. They wrote a variety of essays that presented their innovative and creative ideas about the conservation of natural resources, landfill space and energy. 

CLASS IX:

The students of Class IX used poetry as a form of expression in the Poetry Writing and Recitation activity on the topic ‘My Earth, My Future’. They wrote self-composed poems and thereafter recited them in the presence of their fellow classmates. Their poetic creations reflected the sensitivity and awareness of the young generation towards the issue of environmental conservation and sustenance which can make the Earth a better place. This activity enhanced the emotional and critical learning of the students and offered them a unique way of writing and reciting poetic verses that would prompt them to think about their future in terms of sustainability and resourcefulness. 

CLASS X:

The students of Class X contributed to the awareness campaign against the usage of single-use plastics by participating in a Nukkad Natak/Role Play activity based on the topic ‘The Harmful Effects of Plastic’. The students performed bilingual street plays to highlight the social reality of the adverse effects of single-use of plastics and accentuated the need for the contribution of the citizens to developing and maintaining a sustainable and healthy environment. 

The students displayed great enthusiasm and creativity to convey their message to the audience. They performed scenes that depicted the general attitude of people towards cleanliness and how plastics desecrate the environment. The budding actors addressed the audience and urged them to be responsible citizens and protect the environment.

CLASS XII:

The students of Class XII took part in the Speech Writing and Recitation activity wherein they showcased their creativity and critical thinking skills, and presented their original ideas on the topic ‘Identification of Single-use Plastic and its Elimination’. The students were given 1.5 minutes to share various economic and practical ways to identify single-use plastics and they then presented effective ways to eliminate them. 

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

PLEDGE:

The students of Classes VI-X and XII also undertook the pledge ‘Say No to Plastic’ wherein they pledged not to use plastic as well as educate others about the dangers of plastic use. The students pledged to do their bit in order to contribute in creating a new, clean, healthy and plastic-free India. The pledge provided a comprehensive understanding to the students of how this planet belongs to us and how only we can save it for our secure and bright future. 

QUIZ: 

Students from Classes VI-X and XII participated in an Online Quiz based on the theme of the ‘Plastic Waste Management Act 2016’. The quiz was conducted on Google Forms for a duration of 20 minutes and it helped the students and teachers to acknowledge the fact that although single-use plastic products may epitomise convenience, they cause severe damage to the environment and human health through their production, distribution and litter. 

LECTURE AND DISCUSSION:

The students of Classes VI-X were also invited for an enriching and interactive lecture to create an awareness campaign for phasing out single-use plastic. This session discussed the ‘Problems in the Elimination of Single-use Plastic’ as well as ‘How to Eliminate Plastic from Schools’. The Science teachers of all the classes then expanded upon the lecture via classroom discussions that gave a lot of insight to the students on how a huge change in developing a sustainable environment can be made by following just a few simple steps. The enthusiasm of the students ensured a positive outlook toward a better, eco-friendly and promising future. 

DISPLAY OF POSTERS AND CHARTS:

The awareness campaign was not only limited to a variety of activities that were conducted in the school but also involved the display of bright, colourful and informative posters and charts in the different prominent places of the school, thereby developing consciousness among the students and teachers about the phasing out of single-use plastics.

Thus, the launch of the awareness campaign for reducing the usage of single-use plastic in the school was a great success through the collaborative efforts of all the students and teachers. The campaign turned out to be an exquisite learning experience for everyone, thereby making such endeavours to be the steps toward a brighter, more sustainable future and an eco-friendly nation. 

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (CLASSES VI-VIII)

The Parent Orientation Programme regarding the opening of the school, post-pandemic was conducted on the Zoom platform for the parents of the students of Classes VI-VIII on 12th, 16th and 19th February 2022. The sessions began with the Supervisor of Classes VI-VIII, Ms Vinita Gupta, welcoming the parents and then inviting the Principal,               Ms Padma Srinivasan to address the gathering. 

The Principal thanked the audience for their support and cooperation during these two challenging years of the pandemic and online school as well as assured the parents about all the safety protocols against COVID that are being followed in the school according to the rules and regulations of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. She addressed the audience about the vaccination status of the school staff as well as the transport facilities which will be provided from the new session. She also requested the parents for their continued cooperation in the new session wherein both the health and safety of the students will be a priority to make the reopening of the schools seamless and joyful.

Post the Principal’s address, the Supervisor addressed the gathering and enumerated about the provision of COVID-safety protocols such as thermal scanning, hand sanitisers at various points in the school, regular sanitisation and cleaning of all parts of the school, etc. She also elaborated about the exam-related instructions and spoke about the measures that will be undertaken to bridge the learning gap of the students due to the online learning once the school reopens. 

The school counsellors, Ms Kanika Madan and Ms Saloni Bhati, were then invited to address the audience and they spoke about the concerns regarding the socialisation, physical and mental health and academics that have occurred in students’ lives because of the challenging times of the pandemic. They emphasised on the importance of the role of the parents in being positive role models who would be able to provide a safe environment to the children in navigating their emotions while getting back to the ‘new normal’ way of life. Their suggestions included practising the three Rs – reassurance, routine and regulations, to maintain communication and to manage our own emotions in order to provide adequate support and guidance to the students. 

The three orientation sessions also included a space for the parents to voice out their queries through the chat-box, which were moderated by Ms Madhurima Sarkar and Ms Kanika Chamoli. The queries consisted of a variety of issues such as transportation, learning-gap, uniforms, co-curricular activities, examinations, scholar badges, timings, etc., all of which were duly answered by the Principal and the Supervisor. The sessions concluded with a vote of thanks by the Supervisor who thanked both the Principal and the parents for their never-ending guidance and support. 

EK BHARAT SHRESHTHA BHARAT PROGRAMME (CLASSES VI-VIII)

The Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Programme was conceptualised by the Government of India with the idea of a sustained and structured cultural connect between people of different regions. Introduced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, the programme aims to celebrate the cultural diversity of India through mutual interaction and reciprocity between the people of different states and union territories. Under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Programme, Delhi has been paired with the idyllic state of Sikkim. 

 

Under the guidance of the esteemed Principal, Ms Padma Srinivasan and the Supervisor of Classes VI-VIII, Ms Vinita Gupta, various activities were conducted under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme for the students of Classes VI-VIII of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram between the months of October to February in order to promote the spirit of national integration through a deep and structured engagement between Delhi and Sikkim. The multifarious activities aimed to showcase the rich heritage and culture as well as the customs and traditions of Sikkim, thereby enabling students to understand and appreciate diversity so as to foster a sense of common identity. 

 

The details of the activities for the various months are as follows: 

 

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER: 

The alphabet lays the foundation of a language and helps to communicate with people from all around the world. In order to provide exposure to the Sikkimese alphabet and language, the Department of Hindi organised ‘Weave a Way’ activity for the students of Classes VI-VIII. The students participated in the activity by not only writing down the language proficiently but also by making an attempt to pronounce different words in the aforementioned language. Idioms and names of various body parts and objects of daily use were also understood and articulated in the Sikkimese language. Children got a glimpse of the language and culture of Sikkim through the activity which proved to be the pillar of the concept of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. The teacher incharges for the activity were Dr P Chinna, Ms Rupali Mohindru, Ms Nikita Khera and Ms Mansa Mary Thomas. 

 

The beauty of the Sikkimese language was also exhibited through pledges taken by the children on ‘swachhata’, single-use plastic, saving water and national unity which were presented during the morning class presentations. The teacher incharges who helped in presenting the various pledges were Ms Priyanka Yadav, Ms Aakriti Sharma, Ms. Shipra Rai and Ms Kaveri Dhar.

 

DECEMBER:

The Department of English conducted an Essay Writing Competition titled ‘Essaying Sikkim’ for the students of Classes VI-VIII that aimed to promote learning about the partner state, Sikkim, by sharing their best practices. The students of Class VI penned their thoughts in the form of essays and composed short stories based on the theme ‘The Land of the Red Pandas and Rhododendrons’. The students of Class VII wrote essays on the topic ‘Valuing the Flora and Fauna leads to Sustainable Development’ and the participants from Class VIII expressed their views on the theme ‘Nature and Industry go hand in hand in Sikkim’. The activity was conducted by Ms Ruma Madan, Ms Deepti, Ms Sangita Bajpai and Ms Sapna Sharma and judged by Ms Shraddha Parmar, Ms Kanika Chamoli and Ms Eisha Aleem. 

 

All the students enthusiastically participated in the competition and their essays reflected their understanding of Sikkim and its natural vegetation, geographical features, flora and fauna, wildlife, industry and the efforts made by the government to practice sustainable development. JANUARY: 

To showcase the rich culture, heritage, customs and traditions of Sikkim, the Department of Social Sciences organised an Intersection Virtual Role Play Competition on the theme ‘Blending Ethnicity- Samagrata Mein Ekta’. Through their acts, the students of Classes VI-VIII brought to life the rich culture of Sikkim by dressing up in traditional attires and paved a way to reveal the myriad aspects of the state like dynasties, dance forms, culture, clothings, important places to visit in Sikkim, etc. The competition served as an eye-opener to appreciate, learn and exchange best practices and experiences by imbibing the spirit of national integration at large. The teacher incharges for the event were Ms Madhu Rai, Ms Sakshi Pandey, Ms Priyamvada and Ms Nuzhat. FEBRUARY:

The Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducted an Intersection Powerpoint Presentation Competition titled ‘Pluralist Versions – Ekatmak Sanskaran’ on ideas/thoughts of various themes on Sikkim such as the historical monuments, dressing styles, painting, dance, music, folk arts, handicrafts, alphabets and basic sentences, flora and fauna, wildlife, knowledge of plants used for traditional medicines, climate, ecosystem, etc. The competition strengthened the research abilities of the students and enabled them to showcase and appreciate the rich heritage and culture of Sikkim, thereby inculcating a deep knowledge of diversity and cultivating a sense of common identity. The teacher incharges for the event were Ms Dimple Menon, Ms Neelam Ajwani, Ms Saveri Lal and Ms Bharti and the event was judged by Ms Ruma Madan, Ms Ritu Kumar and Ms Vibha Arora.

Therefore, the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme for Classes VI-VIII was a grand success during which the students and teachers not only engaged with the cultures of Delhi and Sikkim in the myriad spheres of language, literature, cuisine, festivals, cultural events, tourism, etc. but the programme also helped to celebrate the unity in diversity of our nation and promoted the spirit of national integration.

2022 ROOKIE ALL STAR AWARD

Avihan Jain of XII-L, recently led his team in the FIRST Robotics Competition at the Midwest Regionals at Chicago, Illinois. He, along with his 7 team members, represented Team India at the event and won the ‘2022 Rookie All Star Award’, which is the highest ranked award for a first year team.

Fundraising, Outreach, Construction and Programming were a few main highlights of this competition. He helped teach underprivileged students in the areas of STEM, and promoted women in STEM in collaboration with NGOs. The construction of the robot took place at IIIT Delhi under the guidance of experienced mentors. The team also raised funds from manufacturers, and EdTech and FinTech firms. Avihan also got nominated as a participant for the Dean’s List, and is currently a semi-finalist for the award.

CLASS XII FAREWELL

Every ending is a new beginning”- unknown 

D.P.S. R.K.Puram hosted the farewell ceremony for the Class of 2021-22 on the 1st and the 2nd of April, 2022,.The moment of leaving a school after the end of academic life is full of mixed emotions and nostalgia  for a student. This event was planned to bid goodbye to the senior-most students of the school as they step out into this big world away from the sheltered life of school.The students  gathered in the brightly decorated football ground with friends and teachers . They came dressed in beautiful sarees and sophisticated suits to enjoy and gather beautiful memories to cherish for a lifetime . 

The students of grade XII   danced to melodious songs sung by the 11th graders. For many, their cameras became the memory keepers of such a momentous day as they posed in front of the stunning “I LOVE DPS” structure and captured precious moments with their batchmates.They were given a personalized gift of a pen with their names etched along with the year of passing as constant reminders of the years spent in their Alma Mater especially in the most formative years which  shape them  and help them  scale even greater heights.   This splendid event concluded with the teachers bidding the twelfth graders adieu and wishing them the best of luck for all their future endeavours.
