DPS RK Puram wins ‘Outstanding Project Award’ at the 31st National Children’s Science Congress

The National Children’s Science Congress was organised by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The 31st National Children’s Science Congress was held from 3-6 January 2025 at Bhopal. It was hosted by the MP Council of Science & Technology (MPCST). The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurated the 31st National Children’s Science Congress at the Ravindra Bhawan in Bhopal, on 3rd January 2025.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar,Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Mr Anurag Jain,  Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Dr. Suhas Joshi, Director, IIT Indore were also present during the inauguration ceremony. A video message was sent by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

Under the mentorship of Ms. Niva Chhonkar, Head-Biology, the research journey started in 2023, for Nanya Gupta and Aavya Shrivastava of Class IX M  who worked in the Zoology Lab, Sri Venkateswara College and DPS RK Puram ,Biology Lab. They  cleared the Zonal, District and State level and the journey culminated with Nanya Gupta, the team leader representing the Delhi State as a part of a team with students from 7 other schools. The project was presented in front of eminent judges and judged as one of the 20   ‘Outstanding Project’ out of the 648 projects that were presented by the students from the different states of India.

The Research Project was based on the two simple queries  of the student that led to a series of experiments resulting in a series of amazing findings. The queries were ‘Why do dogs eat away lantana plants from my garden and how can I protect sprouted grains from microbial attack and increase shelf life without using synthetic chemicals?

Lantana plant has been of great interest for phytochemical, biological and pharmacological studies. It was to be confirmed that Lantana leaves which  have a strong smell, may have antimicrobial activity  that is why dogs eat them when they are unwell. Lantana is also identified as an invasive variety of weed  in Delhi that has infested 30% of the Delhi ridge area. If the substance / metabolite in the lantana has some medicinal value then this substance can be purified on a commercial scale and used as medicine and on the other hand we can utilize this invasive shrub.

The experiment consisted of 2 phases.First to make leaf extract of Lantana and assess its antimicrobial properties on the  bacteria and compare with the already established antimicrobial properties of Neem and Tulsi. Secondly, depending upon the results from the first phase, create Herbal Sanitizing Wraps using Neem,Tulsi and Lantana for growing sprouts. The most common bacteria, E.coli was used for the studies as its doubling time is 20 minutes so it grows faster..Common fungi- Rhizopus (Bread Mold) and Aspergillus (found as black powder on onions these days) was also grown.

Different concentrations of leaf extracts were used to test the bacterial growth inhibition.Bacterial Growth Inhibition was studied in two ways.

After Data Analysis it was interpreted that Lantana has a substance/chemical that inhibits bacterial growth.Surprisingly contrary to our belief,Tulsi was more effective  in inhibiting E.coli  growth than Neem.

Indian Classical Concert

“Music is a spiritual expression of the infinite. Indian classical music, in its essence, is a journey to the divine.” – Ustaad Ravi Shankar

On 7 January 2025, Delhi Public School R.K. Puram, had the privilege of hosting an Indian Classical Concert featuring the legendary musician Chitravina N. Ravikiran. He is a global icon of Indian classical music, who stunned the world as a prodigy at the age of two. Renowned for his groundbreaking contributions, he has composed over 1,150 musical works, including operas like Ramayana and Mahabharata, and introduced Indian ragas to western orchestras. As the inventor of Melharmony, he has bridged melody and harmony, collaborating with leading artists worldwide and mentoring future performers. He was accompanied by the renowned violin maestro Shri. Delhi Sridhar and the exceptionally talented young percussionist  Akshanan on the mridangam.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest Shri V.K. Shunglu, Chairman of the Managing Committee of Delhi Public School R.K. Puram. The Guests of Honour for the event were: Smt. Madhu Shunglu, Prof. Ganpati Ramanath; Prof. John Tod Horton, Professor of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA and Visiting Guest Professor at Linkoping University, Sweden and Ms Dolly Chanana, Joint Secretary, Delhi Public Society. The concert was attended by passionate music enthusiasts, including Principals, Vice Principals, teachers, and students from various DPS branches across Delhi-NCR.

The evening commenced with a soulful invocation of Lord Shiva through a beautiful song from Uttarakhand, performed by the students of DPS R.K. Puram. This was followed by the main event,  the concert. Shri Ravikiran, Shri Delhi Sridhar, and Master Akshanan delivered spellbinding renditions of two of the most sought-after ragas in the Carnatic music tradition. These included Hamsadhvani, a raga founded by the renowned Ramaswamy Dixitar and popularized by his son Muthuswami Dixitar, and Pantu adi, created by the eminent Tyagaraja. Their performance was a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, leaving the audience inspired and deeply impressed.

The floor was then opened for questions from the audience. During this interactive session, Shri. Ravikiran showcased immense wisdom and spoke about everything from his personal journey to his advice for budding musicians. He introduced a new dynamic to the interaction by combining the worlds of Mathematics and Music. Shri Ravikiran also shed light on the concept of Melharmony, which he has pioneered. It is a captivating fusion of melody and harmony. He explained how this technique addresses inequalities faced by musicians by connecting two distinct musical approaches: the melody-centric style prevalent in India and the harmony-focused tradition popular in the West. This fusion has paved the way for numerous groundbreaking collaborative compositions.

The vote of thanks was delivered by the Headmistress, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra. She extended her heartfelt gratitude to the chief guest and the Guests of honour for their support and motivation. She congratulated Shri Ravikiran, Shri Delhi Sridhar, and Akshanan on their exceptional performance. She also thanked the Principal, Mr. Anil Kumar for his unstinted support and guidance. She thanked the Vice Principals Mr Naresh Miglani ,Mr Anil Kathuria and Mr Mukesh Kumar for being the unwavering driving force behind events of such magnitude and excellence.
