From 24 July to 1 August 2026, a student delegation from DPS RKPuram comprising 27 students and three faculty members undertook a comprehensive academic and cultural exchange program at Soka University in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan. The eight-day itinerary was designed to bridge theoretical academic knowledge with practical global exposure, focusing primarily on collaborative scientific exploration and immersive cultural learning. By interfacing directly with host researchers and local student peers, the delegation successfully fulfilled its core objectives of fostering international academic networks and developing cross-cultural competencies and gathering knowledge on Green Technology.
The academic core of the visit centered on Soka University’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and research centers. Students participated in a series of specialized technical workshops led by prominent university faculty, exploring cutting-edge developments in various fields. A foundational pillar of the program’s success was the implementation of the Soka Peer Buddy System, which paired visiting students with local Japanese undergraduates. These student buddies acted as hosts, cultural interpreters, and academic collaborators throughout the duration of the trip. Complementing the intensive academic curriculum was a curated itinerary of regional sightseeing excursions designed to highlight the interplay between Japan’s ancient history and modern technological landscape.
The curriculum extended beyond the campus gates into structured field studies across Tokyo’s diverse urban landscape. Students engaged in comprehensive fieldwork in Central Tokyo titled “Japanese Business & Pop Culture”, exploring the economic drivers of the city’s modern industries. This was paired with “Shibuya Mission 1: Shibuya Urban Overload”, a curated exercise where students navigated the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections to analyze modern urban planning, consumer behavior, and crowd logistics. To balance this high-energy urban immersion with environmental psychology, the delegation visited the forested grounds of the Meiji Jingu shrine to study Attention Restoration Theory (ART), observing firsthand how natural spaces in mega-cities mitigate cognitive fatigue.
Students experienced a high-speed ride on the iconic Bullet Train (Shinkansen), analyzing its role in regional connectivity and engineering excellence. Cultural continuity was studied deeply during the “Asakusa Identity” excursion, where students and their Soka buddies explored the historic Senso-ji temple district to evaluate how traditional values, architectural preservation, and community identity thrive alongside hyper-modern modernization.
The academic exchange to Soka University concluded with a joint valedictory session where student teams presented their collaborative learning. All 27 participating students demonstrated measurable growth in technical confidence, interpersonal teamwork, and global awareness, while the accompanying faculty members established strong institutional links for potential future partnerships.
