On the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, patriotism and pride filled the hearts of everyone gathered for the flag-hoisting ceremony at DPS R.K. Puram. The Principal, Mr. Anil Kumar; Vice Principals Mr. Anil Kathuria, Mr. Mukesh Kumar, and Ms. Rashmi Malhotra; Headmistress of Grades 6–8, Ms. Vandana Chandoke; and Headmistress of Grades 9–10, Ms. Anubha Gopal, assembled for the unfurling of the National Flag.
As flower petals rained down and the Tricolour rose majestically against the clear sky, a profound sense of national pride resonated among the gathering. The singing of the National Anthem made the ceremony especially poignant, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices of those who fought for the nation’s freedom and the shared responsibility of preserving its values.
Following the flag-hoisting ceremony, students, teachers, and staff proceeded to the AVH for a vibrant Cultural Programme. The programme commenced with a powerful self-composed poem, followed by a thought-provoking speech that emphasised our collective responsibility to uphold the ideals and values envisioned by our courageous freedom fighters.
The event continued with an engaging skit presented by students of Grades 7 and 8, depicting the struggles, sacrifices, and valour of revolutionary figures such as Rani Lakshmibai, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, and many others. This was followed by a soulful choir performance by students from Grades 6 to 10. The melodious voices, accompanied by the enchanting strains of the violin, evoked deep feelings of patriotism and pride.
The dance presentation, “Hidden Language of the Soul,” was an energetic yet graceful portrayal of India’s freedom struggle, performed by students from Grades 8 to 11. Through movement and expression, the performance beautifully captured the resilience, courage, and indomitable spirit of a nation striving for freedom.
In his address, the Principal Mr Anil Kumar highlighted the vital role of culture in preserving the spirit and identity of a nation. He reminded the students that although the British may have exercised physical control over India, they could never conquer the spirit of its people. He encouraged the students to undertake meaningful research into India’s history and to reflect upon the responsibilities that accompany freedom. He concluded with an intriguing and thought-provoking question: “How does commitment relate to freedom?”
The programme celebrated the rich cultural heritage that has united India as one nation and concluded with the distribution of sweets. Guests, parents, teachers, and students carried home not merely the sweetness of the celebration but also a renewed sense of devotion and responsibility towards the country. Independence is more than a historical milestone; it is a belief, a responsibility, and a legacy. It can truly be realised only when every citizen embraces excellence, responsibility, and integrity, choosing them over complacency and mediocrity.
