Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram organized a series of sessions for the students of classes VI to VIII in the winter break. The aim of the Winter Delight activities was to aid the holistic growth and development of the students. These activities were organised with the objective of ensuring student engagement, productivity and fun-filled learning

The activities were organised from 4 January 2020 to 8 January 2020 on 10 am to 11.30 am. The activities were planned and supervised by the Headmistress, Ms Niva Chhonkar. The Reps of Classes VI to VIII, Ms Reema Khosla, Ms Mahima Goel, Ms Rituraj, Ms Nalini Gautam, Ms Vaishali Tiwari and Ms Pratibha Sacher welcomed the respective speakers and initiated the sessions.

“Narrativa – Story Telling”

“Narrativa – Storytelling” session conducted on 4 January 2021 was fun filled with activities and songs. It was indeed a good start for the ‘Winter Delights  : New Beginnings@2021.

Ms.  Neena Mathew, who is a certified child Psychologist and founder of an innovative learning center- Mind and ME,  narrated the story with a message of gratitude and giving back to the society The entire one hour session was quite engaging and entertaining. 

Cake Time – Making a Cheesecake 

Cake time – Making a Cheesecake  session was a very informative and engaging session held on 5 January 2021.The session was conducted by Mr. Jai Kishan Balchandani  and  Chef Abhas Jain from Indian school of Hospitality, Gurgaon.

Step by step recipe of making  a vegetarian cheesecake was shared by the chef. He also answered some frequently asked questions related to cooking  and  shared some tips along  while making a cheesecake to make it more delicious.

Pen & Scissors – Stipple Art, Origami 

The artistic session helmed by two presenters held on 6 January 2021 introduced two new activities to the audience. Ms Sanya Gupta, a freelance artist and an alumna of Delhi Public School, RK Puram introduced the technique of creating Stipple Art. She demonstrated creating mountains through the technique and offered many interesting tips along the way.

The second session was conducted by Ms Jatinder Kaur, PGT Art at Delhi Public School, RK Puram. Ms Jatinder showed a new and interesting way of creating origami flowers and leaves. Primarily using paper folding technique, she demonstrated the creation of a colourful bunch of flowers which can be used for decoration or simply to brighten up our surroundings.

“Health Talk -1. Let the skin glow 2. For your eyes only 3. Healthy Diet”

The ‘Health Talk’ session held on 7 January 2021 included simple routine tips, ones worthy to incorporate into our lifestyle. The session began with Dr. Amit Vij, M.D. Dermatology, throwing light upon how important it is to take care of our scalp, our skin and nourish them. He also advised towards the type and use of oil and moisturizers on our scalp and skin respectively. The role of a healthy nutritious diet also goes a long way to maintain a healthy skin. 

Dr Parijat Chandra, Professor Ophthalmology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, provided valuable insight to taking care of our eyes, especially during these times and age where the dependence on electronic media has increased for education and relaxation. The correct posture to be maintained while sitting in front of the computer and  the distance to be maintained while reading and writing at a table were reinforced. He suggested following the 20-20-20 rule, that is, Every 20 minutes, Take a 20 second break from looking at the screen, Look at something at least twenty feet away. This would help reduce strain on the eyes. A PowerPoint Presentation accompanied the talk to drive home the various points.Dr. Abhishek Shankar, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Lady Hardinge Medical College spoke about the increase in incidence of cancer due to the changes in our environment and  our lifestyle. He advised eating a fibrous diet, including turmeric and garlic in our diet, having food rich in antioxidants like broccoli, cabbage, dark green leafy vegetables,and keeping a low intake of salt. He also advised the exclusion of unhealthy fats,alcohol and nicotine products as these induce poor health conditions.

 “Stitch in time – Embroidery Show & Mask Making”

The session  ‘stitch in time’ was very informative and interesting for the students , held on 8 January 2021 . Ms. Niharika Suneja taught simple techniques of stitching which is essential for everyday life and to make us self reliant.She showed how to repair a torn piece of fabric with a very simple technique. She even explained how to stitch a button on our own. 

The most interesting part of the session was mask making. She showed us how to stitch our own mask at home and also how to decorate it with simple designs or our name initials. Overall the session was skill building and engaging.

The Bubbling Cauldron 2020-21 Edition

The artistic endeavours of the students of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram and its junior schools, DPS East of Kailash and DPS Vasant Vihar are showcased in this edition of The Bubbling Cauldron 2020-21. It carries the beautifully woven stories and verses penned by our budding artists.This edition is very unique as it is for the first time that it has been released as an ebook- a necessary medium in this age of the pandemic.

‘Art Poetica’ – Dr. Prem Kirpal Memorial Interschool Art and Poetry Competitions.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ― Pablo Picasso 

Delhi Public School R.K. Puram hosted the annual Dr. Prem Kirpal Memorial Inter School Art and Poetry Competition on 22 December 2020  virtually, on Google Meet in loving memory of Dr. Prem Kirpal, the former Chairman of the DPS Society. This event saw the coming together of students from 29 schools across the nation. The various competitions successfully highlighted how instrumental art is to life, and celebrated its multifaceted glory. 

In Blend Art, each team selected an English poem of their choice – one student recited and dramatized it, and the other was tasked with depicting its core essence through an original sketch/painting. 

Rune Assay was a competition wherein participants were required to critically analyse a poem given on the spot, dissect its poetic devices, and interpret its relevance in present times. 

Lyrical Canvas was an on-the-spot drawing competition wherein participants were given a line from a well-known poem and were tasked with creating a visual image which accurately captured and depicted the dominant emotion conveyed by it. 

In Inverse Rhapsody, participants were given a short poem/lines from a poem to recite twice. First, the participant recited the poem bringing out the dominant emotion as expressed by the poet and the second time, the participant presented it with an emotion contrasting to the dominant one. 

In Poetic Silhouette, an online shape poetry writing competition, individual participants were required to write a rhyming poem in the shape of the prompt given to them. 

 Lime-in-Rhyme was a competition which celebrated and promoted the unique and multi-layered art of limerick writing. Participants were required to write a limerick based on a verbal input and then recite it.  

The Valedictory Ceremony took place on 6 January 2020 on the virtual platform Zoom, and commenced with the symbolic lighting of the lamp. In her opening address, the Principal, Ms Padma Srinivasan, extended a warm and hearty welcome to the Chief Guest, Mr V.K. Shunglu Chairman of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS RK Puram and Mrs Shunglu ; the Guest of Honour, Chief Justice B.N Kirpal and his wife Mrs. Aruna Kirpal, and other honourable dignitaries which included  Sh. B.K. Chaturvedi, Vice Chairman of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram; Mrs. Namita Pradhan, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram; Professor Dr. Usha Luthra, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram, Sh. Ravi Vira Gupta, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram, Dr. Kiran Datar, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram; Mrs. Vrinda Sarup, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram, Prof. B.P. Khandelwal, Member of the DPS Society and the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram, and Sh. Kaushik Datta,  Member of the Managing Committee, DPS R.K. Puram

Further, Ms Padma Srinivasan spoke about the healing and therapeutic powers of art and how it can provide solace in these unprecedented times. According to her, art is a binding factor which brings people together and breaks barriers, and it is this thought upon which the entire event was conceptualized. She also congratulated all the budding poets and artists who participated in the competitions.

In his address, the Chairman of the DPS Society, Mr. V.K. Shunglu, traced the development of DPS Society and how Delhi Public Schools have evolved over the years, adopting newer and better teaching practices. He then paid tribute to Dr. Prem Kirpal, and imparted the message of holistic education by emphasizing that education is incomplete without art, poetry, music and drama. He concluded by reiterating the need to celebrate both cultural and intellectual achievements.

The cultural portion of the event commenced with a riveting performance by the talented instrumentalists of the Western Music Society. The students of the Expressions Theatre Club, in collaboration with the Digex Society, brought the virtual stage to life with an adaptation of the Russian satire, ‘The Proposal’ by Anton Chekhov. The theatrical display thoroughly entertained all present with its engaging storyline, impeccable costumes, and captivating performances.

The event also witnessed the digital launch of the annual literary magazine, The Bubbling Cauldron, which is an anthology of creative expression. The launch was accompanied by the recitation of select pieces of prose and poetry from the Bubbling Cauldron by the students from Delhi Public School R.K. Puram and its junior schools, DPS East of Kailash and DPS Vasant Vihar. 

This was followed by the announcement of the winners for the various competitions, and a glimpse at the winning performances. The overall winner of the event was DPS Noida. 

Subsequently, a breathtaking painting exhibition was showcased, highlighting the exceptional artistic talent of the students of the host school. 

Professor Dr (Mrs) Usha Luthra addressed the audience, commended the faculty and students of DPS R.K. Puram for undertaking the great endeavour of going digital in these trying times, and recited an original poem by Dr. Prem Kirpal titled “A New Year Resolve”.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Atika Dayal, the head of the English Department. Dr. Dayal commended the participants for their splendid performance and thanked the dignitaries for gracing the event with their presence. 

The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem.

Interactive Session on GENDER SENSITIVITY for DPS RK Puram, Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash Staff

A Virtual Guest Speaker programme on ‘Gender Sensitivity’  was conducted for the teaching as well as non-teaching staff members of Delhi Public school, R.K. Puram, Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash on 2.1.2021 at 10.30 am with the support and guidance from the Principal Ms. Padma Srinivasan. 149 teaching and non-teaching staff members actively participated. A pre-webinar and post-webinar questionnaire was also filled up by the participating members.

Ms. Padma Srinivasan, Principal gave a warm welcome to the guest speaker and all the staff members. Ms. Niva Chhonnkar, Headmistress introduced the topic and requested the guest speaker to share her views. Ms. Preeti Pratihari, introduced the speaker to the audience through the  PowerPoint presentation.

Dr. Priti Dhawan, A doctorate in psychology from the University of Delhi, senior-most faculty member of the department in Lady Shri Ram College for Women, with over two decades of teaching, research and professional experience, addressed the gathering. Through her PowerPoint presentation, she gave an insight into creating an equal and gender-neutral society. She discussed the factors that contribute to gender inequality in the classroom and how to overcome them. She further emphasized that the change must begin from within.  The talk was followed by an interactive question-answer session conducted by Ms. Kaveri Dhar.

Overall the webinar proved to be a very enriching and learning experience. Ms Vinita Gupta proposed the vote of thanks by thanking the guest speaker for sparing her valuable time and other faculty members who were involved in organizing the Webinar.
