Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram hosted the annual Dr. Prem Kirpal Memorial Inter-school Art and Poetry Competitions on 6 February 2013 in memory of the former Chairman of the DPS Society, Dr. P. N. Kirpal. Dr.Kirpal was a writer, poet and artist of great stature and held various senior positions in the Government of India. He was also involved in the workings of the UNESCO. The chief guest for the event was Shri Ashok Chandra, Chairman of DPS Society and Justice B.N. Kirpal, Member, DPS Society graced the occasion as the guest of honour along with his family. Also present were Mr. P.C. Bose, Member, DPS Society; Dr. Ms. Sharada Nayak, Member, DPS Society; Dr. Ms. Usha Luthra, Member, DPS Society; Rear Admiral M. M. Chopra, Vice Chairman, DPS Society; Ms. Renu Mital, Director, DPS Society; Ms. Bindu Sehgal, Principal, DPS Vasant Kunj; Ms. Renu Chaturvedi, Principal, DPS Greater Noida; Mr. J. C. Pant, Principal, DPS Bulandshahr; Ms. Sunita Tanwar, Principal, DPS Dwarka; Ms. Archana Pental, Headmistress, DPS Vasant Vihar; Ms. Dolly Chanan, Headmistress, DPS East of Kailash; Ms. Shobha Mehta, Vice Principal, DPS RK Puram; Ms. Anita Singh, DPS RK Puram; Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Headmistress, DPS R.K.Puram and the overall Incharge of the programme Ms. Savita Vasesi and Mr. Biplabi Samaddar, programme facilitators and Ms. Usha Diptivilasa, programme coordinator; Mr. Mukesh Kumar, School Supervisor, DPS RK Puram and Ms. Pushpa Agarwal, Vice Principal, DPS Shiksha Kendra.
The theme of the competition was “Happiness Unlimited”. Students from 27 schools, including the host school took part in it. There were three main activities taking place simultaneously, namely’ ‘Blend Art’, ‘Artistic Poesy’ and ‘Lyrical Canvas’.
Blend Art involved recitation, dramatization and painting the essence of a poem selected by the participants in advance. This competition was judged by Ms. Mrinalini Chawla, a creative person associated with theatre, set designing and acting; Ms. Nilambari Chintamani, a teacher working with a non-profit organisation; Mrs. Deepa Raghavan, former Vice Principal of DPS R.K. Puram; Ms. Aditi Saigal, a stellar artist and an architect, Ms. Dushleen Bawa, a freelance theatre consultant and Ms. Era Jain, a fashion designer.
While in Artistic Poesy, participants had to compose a poem using a given painting, Lyrical Canvas was its complete opposite. It required participants to illustrate a picture from a given poem. Artistic Poesy was judged by Ms. Shubhagata Kumar, an IRS officer; Ms. Vandana Tandon from The Times of India and Ms. Anjana Agarwal, an international English language tester and examiner. Ms. Banita Hamirwasia, an enthusiastic painter; Mr. Puran Prajapati, a traditional sculptor and Mr. Alok Uniyal, an acclaimed artist judged Lyrical Canvas.
After all the competitions ended, a spectacular cultural event was held by the students and teachers of DPS R. K. Puram. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. Students of the school displayed the journey of poetry through the ages, where they recited poems by leading poets of different ages. Addressing the gathering, the Principal, Dr. D.R. Saini, shared his experience of working under the late Chairman, Dr.Kirpal and his fond memories of yesteryears. Ms. Vanita Sehgal summed up the events of the day. A remarkable musical performance by the students of DPS RK Puram followed. Mr. Ashok Chandra congratulated the participants and expressed his appreciation for the effort put in by all the students and teachers involved in organising the competition which he called, ‘ a harmony of all forms of art’.
Along with Dr. Saini and Mrs. Kirpal, he released the English literary magazine “Bubbling Cauldron”. In the much-awaited prize distribution, the winners of Blend Art were Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, the first runners up were the Mother’s International School and the second runners up were DPS, RK Puram. Artistic Poesy was won by Sanskriti School, followed by Amity International School, Saket, as the first runners up, and DPS Indirapuram along with Modern School, Barakhambha Road as the second runners up. Lyrical Canvas saw Nikita Jha from the Mother’s International School coming up as the winner. The First runner up was Enakshi Borse from Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan. The second runner up was Raghav Bhalla from Modern School, Barakhamba Road. The much coveted Rolling Trophy went to Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan.
The Vice Principal, Mrs.Shobha Mehta delivered the vote of thanks.
