“A nation’s strength lies in the values it carries and the citizens who uphold them.”
On the occasion of the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, 34 students of Class XI Humanities, accompanied by five teacher in-charges -Ms Swati Verma, Ms Harveen Sawhney, Mr Arvind Singh, Ms Deepti Chaudhary and Ms Swati Uppal., had the opportunity to visit the Parliament of India on 2 October 2026, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The visit was organised in collaboration with the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), Lok Sabha Secretariat, as part of the special programme ‘Know Your Leader – Participation of Youth’.
The programme provided students with an enriching opportunity to pay homage to the two national leaders and understand their contribution to the nation. The students participated in the Floral Tribute ceremony held in the Parliament House Complex at Samvidhan Sadan. The occasion offered them a meaningful opportunity to reflect upon the ideals associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri—truth, simplicity, courage, service, integrity and dedication to the nation.
The visit also included an informative introduction to the Indian parliamentary system and its functioning. Students were taken on a guided tour of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Chambers, enabling them to understand more closely the functioning of Parliament, the role of elected representatives, parliamentary deliberations and the process of law-making. Seeing the chambers that they had previously encountered only through textbooks transformed their classroom learning into a tangible and memorable experience.
The students were also taken to Samvidhan Sadan, the old Parliament House, which holds immense historical and architectural significance. Exploring this iconic building gave them an insight into the important events and democratic milestones that have shaped India’s political journey.
A particularly memorable part of the visit was the opportunity to attend the special commemorative programme in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The presence of several distinguished dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, added to the significance of the occasion. Being present in a historic parliamentary space and witnessing a national commemorative programme provided students with a unique understanding of the ceremonial and democratic traditions of Parliament.
The visit also included a tour of the Parliament Library, further enriching the students’ understanding of India’s parliamentary heritage and the importance of research, documentation and informed participation in a democracy.
For the students of Political Science, the visit was much more than an educational excursion. It connected concepts studied in the classroom with the institutions and spaces where India’s democratic processes unfold. It encouraged them to appreciate the importance of constitutional values, responsible citizenship and youth participation in a democracy.
As the students left Parliament, they carried back more than photographs and memories. They took with them a deeper understanding of India’s parliamentary system, a greater appreciation for the country’s democratic heritage, and a renewed sense of responsibility as young citizens. The visit truly transformed a chapter from their textbooks into a living experience of democracy, making it a memorable and meaningful day at the heart of Indian democracy.
