OUTSPOKEN ’22

“Freedom is hammered out on the anvil of discussion, dissent and debate.”

  • Hubert H. Humphrey

Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram hosted one of the most prestigious inter-school debate tournaments, Outspoken ‘22 on 5 November, 2022. The event was organised by DebSoc, the English Debating Society, and saw active participation from 17 schools, 13 eminent jury members and a footfall of around 300 individuals.

The event was adjudicated by Pramit Kumar Das, Ramjas College; Madhav Arora, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce; Dev Mishra, Ramjas College; Chinmayi Sharma, Ramjas College; Darakhshan Tariq, Ramjas College; Samyak Jain, Deshbandhu College; Mannliv Kaur, Aryabhatta College; Milen Anugraha Paul, Maharaja Agrasen College; Harsh Darshan, Sri Venkateswara College; Saksham Sachdev, Maulana Azad Medical College; Shashwat Dash, Delhi Technological University; Manya Vats, Ramjas College.

The debate took place in 2 Rounds: the Preliminaries and the Knockout rounds.

The preliminary round consisted of two events – conventional and turncoat debates. In the Conventional Debate, schools were pitted against each other, arguing ideas relating to censorship, community service, taxation, and more. The participants in the Turncoat Debate faced the challenging task of switching stances mid-debate on topics they had received only on the spot with two minute preparation time.

The top 8 teams, with the maximum cumulative points, advanced to the elimination-style Asian Parliamentary Debate quarters, from where on they went to the semi-finals and the open grand finale. In each round, teams faced off in pairs of two, embodying the roles of Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Chief Whip on side Proposition, and Leader of Opposition, Deputy Leader of Opposition, and Opposition Whip on side Opposition.

The participants undertook engaging discourse, weighing the implications of motions such as “This House Regrets The Narrative That Professionals Working For Nonprofits Perform A ‘Public Service’ Or Sacrifice” and “This House Would Compel Therapists To Break The Seal Of Confessions To Report Crimes.”

Two teams, winning all their previous rounds, made it to the grand finale, which took place in the Audio Visual Hall. Thus ensued a fast-paced and riveting debate on the motion, “This House Believes That Pro-Refugee Advocacy Groups Should Portray Refugees As Valuable Contributors To Society, Rather Than Victims Of Their Circumstances.” The two teams truly presented a captivating discussion, with the audience hanging on to every Point Of Information and Clash

Anticipation ran high as the Valedictory Ceremony began, with the final verdict yet to be released. At the outset, the judges were felicitated with a customised notebook, featuring the name of the event. The teacher-in-charge, Ms Kakoli Sengupta delivered a vote of thanks, reflecting on the efforts and emotions that went into the event. This was followed by the result declaration. Applause resounded throughout the hall as winners were awarded trophies, certificates, and prizes, including premium subscriptions to Taskade, an organisation and collaboration app.

Class XII Scholar Badge 2022-23

“He who lives in harmony with himself lives in harmony with the universe.”
– Marcus Aurelius

The Scholar Badge ceremony for Class XII was held on 4th November, 2022 at Delhi Public School R. K. Puram. This highly anticipated day is an occasion to recognize those students who have excelled in academics and co-curricular activities during the previous academic year.

The Chief Guest for the event was Mr V.K. Shunglu – Chairman of DPS Society and the Managing Committee DPS RK Puram. The Principal – Ms Padma Srinivasan, Vice Principals – Mr Naresh Miglani, Mr Anil Kumar Kathuria and Mr Mukesh Kumar, the Headmistresses – Ms Rashmi Malhotra and Ms Vinita Gupta, and the special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Basoya, and Mr and Mrs. Suri graced the occasion with their presence.

The Scholar Badge Ceremony commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The scintillating beats of the Indian classical orchestra played live by the students of the Performing Arts Society captivated the audience. The mesmerizing symphony started off the most awaited event on an auspicious note.

The Principal felicitated the Chief Guest, following which a short movie showcasing the accomplishments and accolades of DPS R. K. Puram and its students during the academic year 2021-22 was played. The movie presented the audience a glimpse of the year gone by: highlighting noteworthy achievements, events, seminars, workshops and competitions and the multitude of activities that students at DPS R. K. Puram engaged and excelled in.

After extending a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and the special guests, the Principal addressed the scholars. She began by stating that the final year of schooling has seen students scale greater heights, but the best is yet to come. She cautioned that distractions must be avoided and students must concentrate on achieving their goals. She underlined the commitment of the teaching community to help each learner achieve their chosen target. Ms Srinivasan especially lauded the efforts of the scholar badge recipients who performed well in the offline examinations, although the academic year was online. She concluded her speech by saying, “Never rest until you have achieved your best!”

The school choir took the stage to render an original composition, complemented by a live piano performance. It was followed by a classical Odissi performance. Adorned in traditional colourful clothes, the resplendent dancers lit up the stage with their grace and rhythm.

The Chief Guest, Mr V.K. Shunglu addressed the gathering and spoke on how the student community has been severely disadvantaged by the inadequacy of virtual schooling during the pandemic, and suggested that greater focus must be placed on writing skills. He particularly mentioned that students should be wary of falling into the trap of limiting themselves into doing ‘less and less of more and more’ as they grow. He appealed to the students to continue exploring their cultural and musical interests as he felt that it may serve as a ‘safety valve’ later in their lives, and as a source of catharsis during stressful times.

The prestigious award ceremony was conducted by the representatives of class XII, Ms. Richa Aggarwal, Dr. Anubha Gopal and Ms. Vibha Arora. Students were commended for their consistent efforts and resilience in the form of badges, blazers and gold medals. In all, 165 Gold Medals were awarded for academic excellence in 7 consecutive years, 51 Blue Blazers were awarded for academic excellence in the last 3 years, and 99 First Green Badges were awarded for academic excellence in Grade 11.

The Deepanvita Baisya Memorial Award was awarded to the stream toppers of Grade XI: Parth Kumar of XI-D – topping science with an aggregate of 98.2%, Sakshi Jain of XI-R and Pia Agarwal of XI-S – scoring the highest in Commerce and Humanities respectively with 96.8% final aggregate.

The Vice Principal, Mr. Naresh Miglani delivered the vote of thanks. He thanked the Chief Guest, the Principal, the Representatives, the special guests and all attendees for taking time out from their busy schedules to attend the ceremony. Mr. Miglani also congratulated the students for their achievements and their remarkable efforts.
The culmination of the Award ceremony was by the School Anthem followed by  the National Anthem.

                                               तस्मात् ऐक्यं प्रशंसन्ति दृढं राश्त्र हितैषिणः ॥

‘Unity is the strength of any society and it (society) is weak without it. Hence those who wish for the good of the nation strongly praise unity.’

Sardar Patel played a key role in the integration of about 565 princely states into the Indian Union.Few princely states like Travancore, Hyderabad, Junagadh, Bhopal and Kashmir were averse to joining the state of India.Sardar Patel worked tirelessly to build a consensus with the princely states but did not hesitate in employing methods of Sama, Dama, Dand and Bhed wherever necessary. Thus he came to be known as the Iron man of India.

This movie showed the childhood, sacrifice towards family and nation, political life and immense contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It later had a scenic view of the statue of unity that was accompanied by a melodious patriotic song sung by Oorja Akshara.

Viewing the video by students inculcated a robust feeling of Patriotism and helped them know more about the Architecture of India
