REINTRODUCTION OF CHEETAHS IN THE INDIAN HABITAT

An informative session on Cheetahs in India was held on 21st October 2022 in the Audio Visual Hall of DPS Rk Puram.  The DM-Geoquest Club of the Geography Department held an interactive session for the students of class IX about Reintroduction of Cheetahs in India, an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

The event began with an introduction by Ms. Sangita Bajpai (coordinator of the event).  An informative video by Audarya Gupta and Chirag Kumar was then presented. The video depicted the history of cheetahs in India, which once rampant to a point where they were hunted to extinction and then reintroduced. The importance of cheetahs in maintaining balance in the environment and controlling herbivores populations and thus land degradation was highlighted.It focused on the reintroduction of 12 Cheetahs  in India by  Prime Minister Modi in the Kuno National Park on 17th September 2022, which were brought from Namibia and the message from the Prime Minister on the momentous occasion.The video ended with fun facts about Cheetahs.

Ms Padma Srinivasan, the Principal, addressed the gathering with interesting facts about cheetahs-  their speed, beauty, role, eating habits and importance of wildlife conservation. She also asked the students to pledge to inculcate an empathetic outlook to conserve wildlife resources. This was followed by a short interactive quiz. Ten winners were awarded with “Welcome back Cheetah” badges and bookmarks.
