The Annual Inter-School Mathematics Fest THE MATHEMATICAL CRUSADE 2018 was hosted by Delhi Public School, RK Puram on 8 December 2018. Around 30 schools from Delhi NCR participated in this event. It was sponsored by PolyMaxx India, McVitie’s, Macmillan Education, and Travel Quest.
Dr. Niladri Chatterjee, Professor in the Department of Mathematics, IIT Delhi, graced the event with his august presence.
The essential purpose of the competition was to urge students to inculcate imaginative and unique reasoning, and to empower them to appreciate the importance of Mathematics in everyday life. The four events for the day were ‘Mathematics Quiz’, ‘Symphonies of Mathematics’, ‘Model Making’ and ‘Surprise Event’.
Mr. Anil Kathuria, Head of the Mathematics Department, Ms. S.K. Nagalakshmi and Ms. Tandeep Kaur, Teachers-In-Charge, Mathematics Lab and Technology Centre, along with the Mathematics Department and the students of the Mathematical Society, organized the event.
The Quiz consisted of two rounds – the preliminary round and the final round. Participants had to answer questions in three sections namely- Problem Solving, Trivia, and Crossword which tested their rational thinking and acumen.
‘Symphonies of Mathematics’ was a musical event which provoked the students to explore their song-writing and choral capacities. Lively, self-formed pieces containing Mathematics inspired verses were much appreciated by the judges and audience. The event was judged by Dr. Jonaki Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Lady Shri Ram College and Ms. Hemantika Verma, Brand Manager, Dettol.
In the Model-Making competition, students created striking, working models relating to mathematical concepts showcasing their talents in the fields of design and conceptual understanding. The judges for the event were Dr.Raj Kumar, Assistant Professor, Kirori Mal College and Ms. Namita Dhankhar, Assistant Professor, Government College for Girls, Gurugram.
The Surprise event, when unveiled was “Mathematical Tambola”, an enjoyable yet enriching experience for the participants wherein they had to solve puzzles in order to arrive at the correct answers.
The Valedictory commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Dr. Niladri Chatterjee, Sponsorer of the event, Mr. Narang and the Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal.
In her welcome address, the Principal extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest, Judges and participants. She commended the enthusiasm and talent of the participants for both the SNF Fest as well as the Mathematical Crusade and laid emphasis on how good health and mathematics are interrelated for neither follows a fixed set of rules, rather both require attention and care from the individual. She praised the organization and administration of the Mathematics Department and complimented them on the success of the event.
The Chief Guest addressed the gathering, elaborating on the importance of training one’s mind for a healthy lifestyle, and said this training could be provided by practising Mathematics. He further interacted with the audience and spoke about how the history of India provided many examples of great minds and scientists like Aryabhatta and Ramanujan who took Mathematics to great heights. He further expressed his wish to see India regain its position on the global platform and hoped to see students extend their horizons, utilize their talents and succeed in life.
The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal along with the Chief Guest and Judges formally released the Annual Mathematics magazine of the school, Mathyard 2018. This was followed by the much awaited Prize distribution ceremony.
The event concluded with the National Anthem.
