Sports Day 2018

“ Sports do not build character, they reveal it.” – Heywood Broun

DPS R.K. Puram organized the Sports Day on 27 December 2018 with great ardour. The Chief Guest of this grandiose event was Mr. V.K. Shunglu, Chairman of DPS Society and DPS R.K.Puram Managing Committee, accompanied by a special guest, his son, Mr. Sanjay Shunglu. The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Vice Principals, Dr. Renu Nayar , Ms. Padma Srinivasan and Ms. Anita Singh, along with the Head Mistress, Ms. Rashmi Malhotra were also present. The Head of the Physical Education Department, Mr. N. Suresh, supported by his team of teachers ensured the event ran smoothly. The event was co-ordinated by Dr. Shachindra Sharma, Ms. Sangeeta Mishra, Ms. Alinda Holla, and Ms. Archna Deepak.

The event commenced with a riveting March Past led by the Sports Captains, moving alongside a professional March Band. Students of each class marched harmoniously in coordinating outfits.

The balloon release by the Chief Guest marked the opening of the Sports Meet.

Following this was a spirited song ‘Khelenge Jee Jaan Se’, sung by the Indian choir, which signified the importance of playing sports and sportsmanship spirit.

The Principal felicitated the Special Guests with tokens of appreciation and extended a warm welcome to all those present. In her address, she expressed that she never played any  sport but always felt that sports are important as children  imbibe the values of discipline, time management, leadership, and team spirit while playing. She went on to say that every activity, be it quizzes, sports or cultural events, are important in a child’s life as they help him/her build meaningful relationships. Furthermore, she mentioned that when students study, they do so alone, but sports is such an activity which one does in a group. She thanked  the teacher in-charges for all the efforts they had put to make the event a grand success. She concluded her speech with an inspirational quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Win as if you were used to it, lose as if you enjoyed it for a change”.

The first event was the relay race, which took place separately for Classes VI-XI, for both boys and girls. The super energetic young athletes raced to the cheers of the audience.

A rhythmic ribbon dance was performed by students in vibrant outfits. This was succeeded by a dazzling aerobics performance where the students swayed to a medley of the latest Pop songs.

This was followed by an ‘Obstacle Race’ for young boys and girls of all ages. They raced to glory and faced many obstacles such as buttoning blazers and crawling under hurdles.

Next was a serenading yoga presentation, where trained students performed the ancient art to fusion beats.

There was also a skipping race  for girls – the categories were Under-14 and Under-17.

A traditional Dandiya showcase was presented by boys and girls alike. They left the audience in awe with their beauty, grace, and poise.

A slow cycling race was conducted for all classes, where the slowest cycler was awarded the first position. It tested the balance and agility of the cyclists.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Shunglu, addressed the audience, elaborating on how he considered obstacle races symbolic of obstacles and hurdles in life. Furthermore, he spoke about inculcating life skills through formal education, going on to say that he believed that life skills are explicitly derived from experience and cannot be imparted through classroom education. He praised the progressive improvement of the Sports Day held in the school and lastly wished all the participants luck for their future endeavours.

The surprise event  was a joyous game of Musical Chairs played by the parents of the participants.

The Chairman, Mr V.K.Shunglu, Mr. Sanjay Shunglu, Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal ,Vice Principals, and the Headmistress awarded the winners with trophies, medals and certificates.

The Vice Principal, Ms. Anita Singh, delivered the Vote of Thanks. She described the event as a delightful experience and extended gratitude to the Chief Guest, Principal and all participants, teachers, and parents for making the event a huge success.
