National Science and Mathematics Festival

‘SCI– 2020’  for Class VI-VIII  

 “Innovation is seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.” – Dr. Albert, Szent – Györgyi 

The Science and Mathematics Department of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram organised  interactive and stimulating inter-school competitions for students from classes VI – VIII, as part of the National Science and Mathematics Festival. The event saw an enthusiastic response from 62 schools across the country.

The proceedings of the Festival began with the Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan welcoming the Guest of Honour, Padmashree Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director AIIMS. She said that words fall short to praise the noble work done by the Doctor community in this global pandemic. She saluted the relentless work done for the society by the Doctors. 

Dr. Guleria praised the efforts of the teaching community who , he said, had adapted well to the demands of virtual teaching and had  learnt the use of technology during this pandemic. He said that COVID-19 has shown  man  the importance of Maths and Science and how to look for innovative solutions.He praised the Principal and the School for organising this event at this crucial time to ignite  young minds.

Ms. Niva Chhonkar, Headmistress VI-VIII and Head of Department, Biology thanked Dr Guleria for sparing his invaluable time to grace the occasion.

This was followed by video of glimpses of the Submission Events previewed and judged on the 28th. 

The Heads of Departments of Mathematics- Mr. Anil Kathuria, Physics- Mr. J.S. Virdi, Chemistry- Dr. Shachindra Sharma and Biology-Ms. Niva Chhonkar also conveyed their words of support and good wishes for the online event.

The Overall Incharges, Ms. Vibha Arora, Ms. Preeti Gangahar, Ms. Kusum Yadav, Ms Pooja Khanduja and Ms. Shalini Monga informed the online participants regarding the rules and regulations.

The Festival was divided into Submission based events and an Online event.

All entries had to be submitted to the host school by 27 December 2020. Judgement of the Submission based events was held on 28th December.

The Online event – Innovatief Leren,  was conducted on the virtual platform on 29th December 2020. 

The submission based events were:

• Ekphrasis – Poem the picture ( Teacher in Charge: Ms. Dimple Menon)

This event was conducted exclusively for the students of Class VI.

This was a Solo event.Each student was provided 8 pictures ( 2 each related to Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics). The participant had to choose a picture  and compose a poem. An appropriate Title had to be given to the composition. 

• Tira Comica : Comic Strip Designing ( Teacher in Charge: Ms. Manu Gupta)

This was a solo event conducted exclusively for the students of Class VII. A comic strip had to be made on the topic ‘Myths and Misconceptions  related  to Science or Mathematics’, and be given a befitting caption.

• Experimathics: Video of Demo of Science or  Mathematics Concept

Students of Class VIII had to  choose any topic in Science or Mathematics and make a video explaining or demonstrating a concept with the help of an activity, model, objects seen in our surroundings.  The video had to be of a maximum duration of 4 minutes. This was a Solo event.

The onsite event was conducted virtually on the 29th of December: 

• INNOVATIEF LEREN- How do I learn Science OR  Mathematics? ( Teachers in Charge Ms.Pooja Khanduja, Ms. Reema Khosla, Ms. Shruti Gupta)

This event was open to students of Classes VI-VIII. Each team had 2 participants.The team members had to choose any concept of Science OR Mathematics and demonstrate the innovative method of learning it. The methodology had to be such that it substituted the normal typical learning techniques, created an interest in the subject and infused in the student the will to  discover, observe, question and explore.The students had to make a PowerPoint presentation  with a voice over or video and submit the same , by the 27th of December to the host school.  

The video was presented by the participating team  to the Judges.  A maximum of 4 minutes was  provided to each team. 

The event saw some novel ideas put forth by the students, to learn, understand and comprehend the Science and Mathematics topics.

The event was judged by:

-Ms. Namita Dhankhar, Assistant Professor ,Department of Mathematics In Higher Education Haryana,Presently posted in Government College for Women Gurugram

-Dr. Vartika Mathur, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology,  Venkateswara College

-Dr. Roohi Fatima, Associate Professor , Department of Teacher Training & Non formal Education, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and, 

-Ms Geetu Gambhir, Professor and Bursar,Department of Chemistry, Acharya Narendra Dev College, University of Delhi

The  judges praised  the efforts of the students. They stated that they were greatly  impressed by the presentations.The Head of Departments of Mathematics- Mr. Anil Kathuria , Physics- Mr. J.S.Virdi, Chemistry- Dr. Shachindra Sharma and Biology- Ms. Niva Chhonkar, also commended and applauded the efforts of the participants.
