MOSAIC 2019

“ Our lives are unique stones in the mosaic of human existence- priceless and irreplaceable”

The Inter-School Psych-Socio Fest, Mosaic: Patterns of Life was organised by The Psychology and Sociology Club of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram on 27 July 2019. This unique festival aimed to provide students from 29 distinguished schools with a platform to merge the thrill of competition with a great learning experience. The festival was a coalescence of nine events – Canvas, Poise, The Devil’s Advocate, Mind Games, Showcase, Slam Poetry, Nemesis, Social Garage and Glass Eye.

Canvas provided the students with the opportunity to showcase their artistic abilities by making insightful graphics on the  topic, “A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure”. The event was judged by Dr. Neerja Chandra Peters, an acclaimed artist whose works have been put up in many countries.

‘Poise’ was a dance competition that explored the correlation between movement and emotion. The participants presented a fusion of Western and Indian dance forms to express their disparate perspectives on the theme ‘The Wound is the Place where the Light enters you’. The judges for the event were Mr. Tushar Bhardwaj, a highly experienced performing arts professional and an integral part of the ‘Rainbow Dance Theatre’ and Ms. Vidha Lal, a multi- faceted Kathak exponent and a winner of several prestigious awards, who also made it to the Guiness Book of World Records.

The Devil’s Advocate was a ‘TurnCoat Debate’ where speakers had to put forth both sides of the motion within a specific duration of time . It was judged by Mr. Anirban Bhattacharya, a partner at General Corporate, Mergers and Acquisitions, Private Equity.

Glass Eye was the pre-judged photography event in which the budding photographers utilized the medium of photos to voice their opinions on social issues. It encouraged the participants to decipher the issue beyond the general understanding through photographs of moments in everyday life. The off-site event was judged by the school’s acclaimed photography club Digex.

The ‘quizzing’ event, Mind Games was one which tested the participants’ understanding of psychological facts. It was conducted in two phases- the first one consisted of a written preliminary round and the second one was a fast-paced buzzer round. The second phase also had a surprise dumb-charades round where the participants had to enact a short skit conveying one emotion while their body language conveyed another.

The event was judged by Ms. Saanvri Kapoor who is the Founder of Shaadi Brigade, a wedding planning company.

Showcase involved showing of thought-provoking advertisements, demanding the students to present their psychological and sociological analysis on various aspects covered by the ads. The event was judged by Ms. Veena Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Indraprastha College for Women.

Social Garage was an event that encompassed the arguments that arise from various social issues and evils in society. Pairs of participants were decided on the spot and each pair was given their topic 20 minutes prior to the commencement of the event.

The event was judged by Mr. Nagendar Sharma, a professional journalist who was awarded the prestigious Ram Nath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2009; and Ms. Ashna Bahl Chaddha, who worked as an Associate Programme Editor with NDTV 24X7.

The celebrated topic for this year’s Nemesis  was ‘Pandora’s Box’. Being one of the most descriptive myths of human behaviour, the participants presented their analyses of the scripture from a sociological point of view as they looked at stories from their childhood from a contemporary  perspective. The medium of presentation was chosen by the students- English or Hindi. The event was judged by Mr. Saquib Salim, a freelance writer who is currently working as research head and content writer for museums, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

Spoken word and drama collided for the Slam Poetry , as the students recited pre-written, self-composed poems in English or Hindi. The young poets expressed their heartfelt views on relevant social issues like misogyny and body-shaming. The judge for the event was Ms.Chhaya Dabas, the founder and creator of ‘Baatein’, a poetry blog.

The Valedictory Function began with the students of DPS RK Puram presenting a graceful invocation dance. The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal addressed the gathering and emphasised on the importance of Psychology and Sociology in everyday life of students and especially the teachers. Expressing her desire to have studied these subjects  in school, she urged the students to take up co-curricular activities, subjects and values that help them understand life better. She commended the Club Presidents and the teachers involved for their effort in making the event a success.

The winning team of Poise presented their impactful dance demonstrating the story of a victim of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The students of our school  showcased a theatrical extravaganza- a coalition of drama, poetry, music and dance, highlighting the theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day- ‘Suicide Prevention’.

The Principal, Vice-Principal, Judges, and Teachers in charge were invited to the stage for the prize distribution.

The event concluded with the National Anthem.
