India’s Soul Lives in Its Handlooms and Handicrafts

On May 15, 2026, Geography students from Grades XI and XII of Delhi Public School, RK Puram, embarked on an experiential learning visit to Dilli Haat INA, the famous craft bazaar run by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation.”The trip was organised by the Department of Geography under the guidance of Ms Sangita Bajpai (Coordinator) and Ms Swati Uppal. The main objective of the visit was to acquaint students with the collection of primary data and its various methods, such as surveys, questionnaires, and mapping of an area. SDG 17 Partnership for achieving goals was also a learning outcome.

The visit helped students understand the importance of handicrafts, tourism, and cultural diversity. During the visit, students conducted surveys and learned about the merits and demerits of this method of data collection.

The students were fortunate to meet National Awardee Ms Mamta Devi in her stall featuring generationally crafted Madhubani Paintings, wherein students were explained how the paintings were made with reed pens and organic ink. The visit provided students with an opportunity for experiential learning by connecting classroom concepts with real-life situations. Dilli Haat provided the Geography students a view of how different craftsmen, artisans and painters, with their exceptional abilities, gathered together in the unique craft bazaar and provided customers with a taste of the subcontinent. From Pashmina to Eri, Mulmul cotton to bamboo silk, clay pottery to wooden handicrafts, the students absorbed the unique blend of Indian handloom and its connection with the diverse land.  Overall, it was an informative and enriching experience for the students.
