As part of an educational excursion, students of Class XI A from the Biology sections visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, widely regarded as India’s foremost medical institution on 25th September 2026.The visit was organised on the occasion of AIIMS’s 71st Founders’ Day celebrations, during which the institute set up a number of informative stalls across its campus. Each stall was run by a different department and was designed to create awareness about medical procedures, health conditions, emergency care and preventive health practices.
Objective of the Visit
The primary objective of the visit was to give students practical exposure to the fields of medicine and healthcare, complementing their classroom learning in the PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) stream. The visit also aimed to build awareness among students about first aid, emergency response, organ donation and healthy living, and to encourage interest in medical sciences as a career path.
Stalls Visited and Observations
The following stalls were set up by various departments of AIIMS, each focusing on a specific area of medicine and public health:
- Department of Cardiology
This stall provided information about various cardiac procedures and surgeries, including the use of stents and pacemakers. Volunteers explained different cardiac cases and syndromes, helping students understand how various heart conditions are diagnosed and treated.
- Department of Neurology
This stall focused on the nervous system, covering common neurological conditions and the diagnostic and treatment procedures used by the department.
- Roadside Rescue and First Aid
This stall demonstrated the correct procedure for helping a person involved in a road accident. Volunteers explained how to lay the injured person in a straight position, keep the head stable, and apply a bandage or tourniquet correctly when needed, taking care to avoid tying it near the joints.
- Poison Information and Control
This stall provided guidance on what to do in case of accidental poisoning or overdose of medicines. A toll-free helpline number was shared with students, along with magnets printed with the number for easy reference at home
- Organ Donation Awareness
This stall created awareness about the importance of organ donation, explaining how a person’s organs can continue to save and improve other lives after death. Informational pamphlets on organ donation were distributed to students.
- Cervical Cancer Awareness
This stall distributed brochures with information about cervical cancer, its prevention and early detection, and informed students about the free vaccination available against the disease.
- Body Mass Index (BMI) and Health Check
At this stall, students could get their height, weight, blood sugar and blood pressure checked, and learn how to calculate and interpret their Body Mass Index (BMI).
- CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Demonstration
This stall allowed students to practise CPR on a dummy fitted with a sensor-based machine. The machine gave instant feedback on the accuracy of the technique, including the depth and speed of compressions and the likely effectiveness of the CPR performed.
- Dietary Awareness (Regional Thalis of India)
This stall displayed the dietary patterns followed across different regions of India through sample thalis representing North Indian, South Indian, East Indian and West Indian cuisines, highlighting regional nutritional diversity.
Key Learnings
- Basic first-aid and roadside rescue techniques that can help save lives in emergencies.
- The correct technique of performing CPR and its importance in cardiac emergencies.
- The significance of organ donation and its role in giving others a second chance at life.
- Awareness about preventive healthcare measures such as cervical cancer vaccination and regular BMI monitoring.
- An understanding of specialised medical fields such as cardiology and neurology.
- The importance of a balanced, region-appropriate diet for good health.
Conclusion
The visit to AIIMS, New Delhi, on the occasion of its 71st Founders’ Day was an enriching and informative experience for the students of Class XI. It offered valuable hands-on exposure to various aspects of medical science and public health that go beyond the regular school curriculum. The interactive nature of the stalls, especially the CPR demonstration and the roadside rescue session, made the learning experience memorable and practical. The visit successfully fulfilled its objective of spreading health awareness and inspiring interest in the medical field among students.
