International Admissions 2013 – A new and unmatched record

This year our students have secured admission to all the 8 Ivy League Universities, some of them with full scholarship. They are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, U-Penn and Yale. The total number of admissions secured in these institutions are 19.

Two of our students have secured admissions to more than one Ivy League institution: Shreya Vardhan has secured admission to 5 of them, namely, Harvard (Early Action), Columbia, Cornell, Yale and Princeton: all with 100% scholarship. Sonali Chauhan has also secured admission to 4 , namely, Yale, Brown, U-Penn and Cornell.

Three students of the school, namely Shreya Vardhan, Akshay Sawhney and Prateek Alkesh, who have secured admission to Cornell University in the US, have been selected as Cornell University Tata Scholars and are recipients of the Tata scholarship for students from India. This scholarship will support their entire undergraduate education, along with living costs and other expenses, at Cornell University. This is the largest number of students selected from a single school in the country – a feather in the cap of DPS RK Puram!

In recognition of this outstanding achievement, these three students, along with their families, were invited to attend the Tata Scholarship Recognition Luncheon hosted by the University at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Apollo Bunder, Mumbai, on Sunday, 7th April, 2013. Air fare, accommodation and transportation, were provided to them free of cost.

This year, 4 students have gained admission to the University of Pennsylvania namely Dhruv Baid (Early Decision), Kartik Srivastava, Sonali Chauhan and Ishita Batra- which is an unprecedented record! And Sonali Chauhan has also been selected for the prestigious Huntsman Program, which includes studying at Wharton, along with International Relations and one foreign language. Sonali will be taking up German in this program. Sonali has indeed done the school proud as this is the first time a student has been selected for the Huntsman Program from the school.

For the first time in the history of the school, three students have secured admission to the University of Washington in St. Louis, a very prestigious university with a large number of Nobel Laureates in their faculty. For the first time in the history of the school, Pratham Alag secured admission to the University of California, Berkeley with the prestigious Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship. This is the first time that an Indian student has received this scholarship from UC Berkeley, which includes financial aid, extendable up to 100% (covering all costs) and an honorarium of $2500 per annum, along with other benefits.

International French Language Olympiad 2013
Ms Vaishali Kumar of Class 10 J has secured the First Position (State Rank: 1 and International Rank: 1) in the International French Language Olympiad 2013 organised by Silverzone in association with the French Language Teachers ‘ Association. The Olympiad was held on 11th December 2012.
Vaishali was awarded a certificate, a gold medal, a citation and a cheque of Rs 10,000/-.Vaishali Kumar has been an outstanding student of our school and she has also participated in the school French Exchange Programme held last year.
Our school has also secured the 2nd Overall Position in the Olympiad.

18 students of Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram got selected in the merit list of Junior Science Talent Search Examination (JSTSE) 2013. JSTSE was conducted by Science Branch of Directorate of Education on 27th January, 2013.
Raghav Khullar International Rank No.1 in NSO
Raghav Khullar of class 10 has secured the first rank in the Second Level of the National Science Olympiad, the result of which was declared on 26th March, 2013. Millions of students from approximately 25000 schools and more than a 1000 cities and 14 Asian countries appeared in the Olympiad.
SOF is a registered not-for-profit organization popularising Science, Maths, English and Computers among school children. This year, 860 students of our school participated in the 1st Level Exam on 29th November 2012 out of which 109 students qualified for the second Level. The 2nd level of NSO was conducted on 17th February2013. 20 other students of our school have secured state level ranks in the 2nd level of the NSO. Out of 109 students who appeared in the second level, 21 students have secured first 25 ranks of the state level.
The Boy Who Remembers Everything
Saswat Satapathy of Class X–L has won the World Memory Championship in London held in December 2012. 72 students from 25 countries participated in around ten events. Saswat won 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal. He has broken his own record in the spoken number category.
Saswat had earlier won the national memory championship held at Hyderabad on 28th October 2012.

Times Scholars 2012
Times Scholars, an initiative of The Times of India, is a scholarship programme to which about 45,000 students of class 12 from all over India applied in September 2012. 20 candidates were declared Times Scholars after a five-stage selection process, including two students of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, Shreya Vardhan and Barun Patra. The Top 20 candidates will receive a scholarship of Rs. 5 lakh. Another student from DPS RKPuram, Ishita Mishra was also among the top 40 candidates, who reached the final round and will receive a scholarship of Rs. 5 thousand. The preliminary screening round was followed by an aptitude test held on 23rd September, 2012. Students were selected on the basis of this test for the regional interview round, after which 100 candidates from across the country were selected for the national interview round held at the Times Centre, Noida on 2nd November, 2012. 40 students were finally shortlisted for the final round on 3rd November, out of whom 20 were selected as Times Scholars.
Shreya has been an outstanding student. She had a CGPA 10 in classes 9 and 10, 94.2% in class 11 and 95% in the class 12 mid-term examination. Currently the Head Girl of the school, she is the Founder Member of the Physics Society and Editor of the Physics Magazine. Barun Patra has won numerous accolades for programming events in different interschool computer symposia, namely MINET at Mother’s International, MODEM at Modern School Vasant Vihar and CORE at DPS Dwarka .He is the Head of Programming, EXUN clan and has received the Ishwar Chandra award twice for being the section topper in class XI and XII; and the Prantik Roy Memorial award in class 10. Barun has been a scholar badge holder throughout, having received the NTSE scholarship in class IX, the blue tie, Gold Medal, and the Red blazer for I.T (programming).

Dr. D. R. Saini, the Principal of Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram, New Delhi, one of the most reputed educational institutions in the country and abroad, has been selected for the National Award to Teachers 2011. The award was conferred on him on 5th September 2012 in a special ceremony by the President of India at Vigyan Bhavan. It was telecast live on DD Bharti and DD News.
Dr. Saini, one of the stalwarts of the DPS Community, has 34years of dedicated service in the field of education, sports and culture, and has held the responsibility of Vice Principal of this great institution for 14 years and of a Principal, since August 2009. Dr. Saini is the recipient of 15 prestigious awards for his dedicated service towards Education and Sports.

ShreyaVardhan has been an outstanding student. She had a CGPA 10 in classes 9 and 10, 94.2% in class 11 and 95% in the class 12 mid-term examination. Currently the Head Girl of the school, she is the Founder Member of the Physics Society and Editor of the Physics Magazine. She was one of the 20 students selected by the Times Scholars program on 3rd November, 2012 to receive a merit scholarship of Rs 5 lakh. The award was instituted by the leading newspaper of India, The Times of India, and the five-stage selection process involved a written test and interviews with eminent personalities from the field of education. Out of the 45,000 participants from across the country, the 20 winners were selected on the basis of both scholastic aptitude and a vision for the future. Shreya has received the Aadhi Aabadi Women Achievers Award (September 2012) for exceptional academic and extracurricular achievements and contributions to society as a woman. She has been an NTSE Scholar, clearing the three rounds of the National Talent Search Examination in2009 and a recipient of the SLTSE Award (State Level Talent Search Examination): 1st rank in std. 10.
She got 5th Olympiad rank in the International Olympiad of Science in Class IX.and 10th Olympiad rank in the International Olympiad of English in Class X. She received the G. Bhaskar Memorial (2011-12) Award for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities and the Ishwar Chandra Memorial Award for securing the highest marks in the section in class 11.
Besides being an avid reader, Shreya has written many short stories and articles and even has to her credit a book called “How Charming, Mr. Bombaywallah!”, on the adventures of an unadventurous investment banker and his exuberant mother, a detective novelist. Tennis and quizzing are her hobbies.
She has developed a software to help autistic and other differently abled children meet their learning requirements, which is being used by the Umeed Foundation, the Tamana Foundation NaiDisha School, The Tamana Autistic Centre- School of Hope, and Action for Autism, New Delhi.

Full Scores in International Examinations
Shreya Vardhan has secured full scores in all the exams for international admission she has appeared in. These include SAT Reasoning test (2400/2400) held on 28th January 2012, Subject SATs – Chemistry (800/800), Physics (800/800), Mathematics level -2 (800/800) held on 5th May 2012, APs – Chemistry (5/5) held on 07th May 2012, Calculus AB (5/5) held on 09th May 2012, Physics C (Mechanics) (5/5) held on 14th May 2012 and TOEFL (120/120) held on 09th June 2012.
She secured a CGPA of 10 in class X and 94% in class XI. She is an NTSE scholar and was ranked 10th in the International Olympiad of English Language in class X. She also secured an International rank of 5 in the International Olympiad of Science in class IX.
She is an avid writer and her articles have been published in a number of national newspapers. These include an article on “Understanding Autism”, published in the Hindu in June this year, and a write-up on how “Accidents are inevitable but essential”, in The New Indian Express. She has written book reviews for “The Pioneer” on ‘Tell Me a Story’ and ‘Intermission’. Her short stories have been published in the online literary magazine Teen Ink (A Wraith When Ruffled, Moonlight, Grievances – awarded with an editor’s choice award). A story on child labour called “A Lost and Found Dream”, was also published in the Deccan Herald on 3rd May, this year.
She has also been doing volunteer work at the Umeed Foundation, a school for autistic and differently abled children, and has designed a software called “Let’s Go Around Town”, to help them meet their learning requirements.
She has been a keen participant in various quiz competitions and was the finalist in the Inter-DPS Quiz Competition in class X, having cleared the zonal round as the winner of the West Zone (DPS Jodhpur). She is a scholar badge holder.
She loves to read, and some of her favorite writers are P.G. Wodehouse, Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Stroud and Jawaharlal Nehru. She has great interest in the theatre, and has written and acted in several skits at the Poona Arts Theatre and at her schools. She plays tennis and enjoys swimming.

Shreya comes from a family of professionals. Her father, Col. (Dr.) Shakti Vardhan, MBBS, MD & DNB (Obs & Gyn) a graduate & postgraduate from AFMC, Pune is presently working as a Senior Advisor (Obs & Gyn) at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) Delhi Cantt.
Her Mother Mrs. Reena Vardhan, BA, MA (English), MSc. (Computer Science), B. Ed. Is a teacher and a software professional. She is actively involved in online teaching of software courses, and has helped many a students help them achieve their goals.

National Talent Search Examination
The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship programme in India to identify and nurture talented students. The scheme is open to students of Indian nationality. Only students studying in Class VIII are eligible to appear for the selection process. As it is organized by an official body (NCERT), it is widely regarded as the most prestigious examination at the high school level in the country.
A scholarship of Rs. 500 per month, under the present scheme, is awarded to the selected candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to the doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to the second-degree level.
Any regular student studying in class VIII in a recognized school situated and has in the NCT of Delhi and has secured an aggregate of 60% marks (55% in case of reserved category) or more in class VII examination is eligible.

It is a proud moment for all of us at DPS R K Puram to announce that 9 students have cleared the NTSE with Vasundhara Rakesh standing first at the National Level. This result has surpassed the last year’s result where we had 6 students clearing the exam.

Out of the 151 students selected from the Delhi Region in the open merit Junior Science Talent Search Examination, 21 students from DPS R K Puram have been awarded the scholarship.
This exam is conducted every year by the Directorate of Education, Govt. of NCT, Science Branch.
The objective of this scheme is to identify the most brilliant students in the state in Class IX and to recognize their scientific aptitude by giving them scholarships and certificates, so that they may hone their talent in whatever field of higher education they wish to pursue. The scholarship gives them an edge over the others for future selection in the streams of their choice.
The Scholarship of Rs.2000/- for JSTS and Rs.1000/- for Open Merit is distributed in two installments.
