HIGH SCHOOL AND PHARMACY
[The article published in "THE INDIAN PHARMACIST - AUGUST, 2010"]
Dilemma of every high schoolstudent starts when they are toselect the subjects of their choiceand decide a stream that will definetheir future profession. The processbecomes agonising when choicesare thrust on them by parents orpeers. The absence of propercounselling in most schools takesits toll when students enter intostreams without proper professionalguidance. Students take it easy inclass XI only to find out later thatmost subjects or courses they optedfor are application based instead ofthe usual mugging up curriculumthey mastered through the years.
My pursuit to education inpharmacy has been driven by myselfless interest to serve society in amanner as has been understood byme. Even before I step into theuniversity campus, living in afamily of pharmacists has made meone in spirit. I have had the goodfortune of being born in a family oftwo generation of pharmacists, imbibing in me strong family values that believe in “service before self”. The study of rigorous science courses all through high school has given me the understanding and acumen needed to choose pharmacy as my field of future education.
I understand that while pharmacy is guided by the sole objective of treating lives and giving smiles to millions of people worldwide, it’s industry has always been a major contributor to the world economy. Pharmacy not only makes chemistry and biology interesting and purposeful but also holds great scope for building and challenging scientific minds. The study of pharmacy ensures that the students are educated in technical and scientific field where everything learnt has a rationale. Moreover, the profession can provide eligible THE INDIANstudents of being selected for internship programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and research laboratories. The study of pharmacy also ensures that the students get a first hand experience of how sciences studied at high school form the basis of pharmaceutical technology to manufacture pills and liquids that cure many-a-million.
With my firm interest in pharmacy and the realisation that pharmacy has been a missing choice among high school students, I initiated the idea of forming a prepharmacy club. The guidance of my teachers, Prem Dhawan, Head of Department-Chemistry; Ms Mamta Sharma, School Counsellor; Mrs Prema Pandey; Mukesh Kumar; approval of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association; efforts of my colleague Shivani Mittal; enthusiasm of the enlisting student members; and the full hearted support extended by my Principal, Dr D.R. Saini enabled the founding of the first pre-pharmacy club at my High School, Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, New Delhi. I believe it will be a unique method for making high school students aware of pharmacy at the grass-root level and consider it as a study option, when generally they opt for medicine, engineering, commerce, law, art or social sciences. It would be futile for a student to take up biotechnology as a subject in high school without actually visiting a plant manufacturing biotechnology products. The results and outcome of this theoretical subject when explored will surely develop interest and challenge thinking minds.
The absence of support and counselling at high schools by government organisations, the Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Food and Drug Administration, pharmacy colleges and technical institutes is evident. The no-show by pharmaceutical companies leaves a vacuum about understanding of this highly scientific and rewarding profession.
The pre-pharmacy clubs and internships will surely attempt to correct all this. Providing a very meaningful experience to students, the club will explain vividly the application of maths and sciences studied in high school to the field of pharmacy. The club will assist to bridge the wide gap of understanding of pharmacy at high schools and lay a foundation for its presence, awareness and recognition. Above all, it will ensure students choose their subjects of choice with clarity while having complete understanding and equal opportunity to select pharmacy as their future profession.
