The Psalms Western Music Club of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram put up the annual western music and band competition ‘Voices and Fireball 2013’ on the 27th of July 2013. Nine schools participated in it from all across Delhi.
The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The Principal, Dr. D.R. Saini extended a warm welcome to all the guests. The judges included Ms. Vasundhra, professional vocalist and part of the Duo called ‘Adil and Vasundhra’ specializing in Jazz and funk music; Mr. KabirMahajan, the highly skilled drummer from ‘The Guillotine’, who has also opened in concerts for bands like Metallica ; and Mr.AkshayJohar, bass guitarist of rock band ‘Barefaced liar’ who works under the alias Mojojo, famous on Youtube for Dubstep music. Also present were Mrs. Pushpa Agarwal, Vice Principal of DPS Shiksha Kendra and coordinator of the programme; and the western music teachers, Mr. Rajesh Updhayay and Mr. Dominic Paul.
The competition unfolded in two sections, the first being ‘Voices’ which consisted of three categories: Group song, Classic instrumental music and Duet. The other was ‘Fireball’, the electrifying rock music segment of the day. The band from DPS R.K. Puram, which didn’t actually contest in the show, officially marked its beginning with an ebullient number.
Astounding performances on the songs of Megadeath, Porcupine Tree, Evanescence and the likes from the students left the audience asking for more. Acapellas, which are songs sung without the support of any musical instruments, also won the plaudits of the judges.
In the much awaited prize distribution, DPS Noida bagged the highest number of prizes, securing the first position in both the Duet and Classical Instrumental Music categories and second position in the Group song category. Amity International, MayurVihar was awarded for singing the best Group song. The second and third places were given to St. Columba’s and The Shri Ram School for the duet segment, Amity International, Pushp Vihar and Amity International, Mayur Vihar for Classical Instrumental Music and DPS Noida and Amity, Pushp Vihar for the group song category respectively.
The winner of ‘Fireball’ was the rock band from St. Columba’s while the band from The Shri Ram School were the runners up. St. Columba’s also won individual prizes for Best Drummer, Best Bassist, Best Band and Best keyboardist. Meanwhile, the best lead guitarist was from DPS Noida and the best vocalist from the Shri Ram School. DPS Noida received the rolling trophy.
The event was a treat for all music lovers.
