Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram, a premier educational institution founded in 1972 under the aegis of DPS Society, celebrated 40 years of ‘Excellence in Education’ on Wednesday, 18th April, 2012.
Her Excellency, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Hon’ble President of India was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Other guests included Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat, Mr. Salman Khurshid, Minister of Law and Justice, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Admiral M. M. Chopra, Vice Chairman of the DPS Society. Mr. Ashok Chandra, the Chairman of the DPS Society, presided over the function.
One of the most prestigious schools in India, DPS R.K Puram has carved a niche for itself in the field of education. The DPS alumni holds responsible positions in all walks of life in India and throughout the world. Declared No. 1 in Academic Excellence for the fourth consecutive year as per the Education World Day Schools Survey 2011, this year the school was also been ranked as No. 1 for ‘Value for Money’ and ‘Community Service’.
An exhibition of art, science and social science projects made by the students was displayed in the school. During the exhibition, astronomy club students got their Hydro-Rocket launched, spotted Venus and Sun on Telescope. Production of Bio-Diesel from Rice bran oil was also demonstrated. Robotics students displayed path following robots and many other robots.
The ceremony commenced with the national anthem, after which the lighting of the lamp took place. Diwakar Sharma, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs runner up and student of DPS R.K Puram, captivated the audience with his soulful rendition of the song ‘Padharo Mhare Des’.
Mr. Ashok Chandra delivered the welcome address, thanking Her Excellency for taking time out of her busy schedule to inspire and guide the students. The President was then felicitated with a bouquet. Mr. B. Samaddar, an eminent artist and Head of the Art department of DPs RKPuram, presented Her Excellency with her portrait made by him. The Principal, Dr. D.R.Saini presented Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat with a bouquet.
The Principal addressed the gathering, tracing the development of the school over 40 years. The Head Boy and Head Girl then highlighted its numerous achievements. A video presentation capturing the evolution of the school and that of the Delhi Public School Society was shown.
The President was called upon to present awards to outstanding students and alumni of DPS RKPuram in the field of Academics and Sports including eminent personalities Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Anjum Chopra and Neha Aggarwal.
A cultural programme was put up by the students. The students of DPS R.K Puram and its junior schools, Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash jointly made an orchestra presentation. The tiny tots of DPS Vasant Vihar and DPS East of Kailash showcased their talents. While the former presented a dance, “Jo himmat na hare wo zindagi savare”, as a tribute to the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle and the joy, privileges and duties of being born in a free nation, the latter presented a vibrant amalgam of gymnastics and classical Bharatnatyam. The students of DPS R. K. Puram presented a vibrant folk dance of Punjab, followed by the fisherman’s folk dance of Maharashtra. The students of DPS Shiksha Kendra, a school for the underprivileged run by DPS R.K.Puram, enthralled the audience with their patriotic group dance to the song ‘Arambh hai prachand’ to salute the martyrs of the nation.
Her Excellency, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil lauded the success of DPS R. K. Puram in various fields and highlighted the role of teachers in guiding and moulding the youth. She emphasized the importance of holistic development and stressed upon the role of education in inculcating civic sense among the citizens.
