Visit of Ms. Sharmistha Mukherjee

16 July 2014 was a memorable day for Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram as Ms. Sharmistha Mukherjee, a highly accomplished Kathak dancer, a keen choreographer, a passionate columnist and activist, visited the school. She has achieved world-wide acclaim in her field and has performed in over forty countries. Present on the occasion were the Principal, Dr.D.R.Saini; the Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta; the Vice Principal, DPS Shiksha Kendra, Mrs. Pushpa Agarwal; and the headmistresses, Ms. Vanita Sehgal and Mrs. Anita Singh.

The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp, and the chief guest, Ms. Mukherjee was welcomed with a bouquet by Dr. Saini and a performance by the Indian orchestra, which was followed by a video regarding the achievements of the school. The Principal addressed the students and highlighted the importance of talent, passion and hard work, which is the key to success. Tapas Bhardawaj, a student of DPS R.K. Puram threw light on the significance of dance in Indian culture.

The cultural program began with a melodious song by the Indian Music Choir. The students presented a series of dances, starting with the mesmerising Kathak performance, the energetic fusion Bharatnatyam and finally the graceful Russian ballet and Contemporary dance. The girls of DPS Shiksha Kendra, a school for the underprivileged run on the premises of DPS R.K. Puram, presented an exhilarating dance drama on the plight of the girl child.

Ms. Mukherjee addressed the gathering and encouraged the students to follow their dreams and highlighted how art can be, ‘not only a passion but also a profession’ and spoke about the responsibilities of the students as the youth of today and the future of tomorrow.

The Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta delivered the vote of thanks, and the event ended with the national anthem.

It was a truly enriching experience for one and all.
