It was a red-letter day for Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram when the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and a prestigious alumnus, Dr. Raghuram Rajan visited the school on 23rd January 2014. Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He has also been the Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund.
The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The chief guest was welcomed by the Principal, Dr.D.R.Saini with a bouquet and a portrait of him made by the Art Department of the school. Also present on the occasion were Rear Admiral M.M. Chopra, Vice Chairman of the DPS Society; Vice Principal, Mrs Shobha Mehta; Vice Principal, DPS Shiksha Kendra, Mrs.Pushpa Agarwal; and the Headmistresses, Ms Vanita Sehgal and Mrs. Anita Singh.
The cultural program began with a performance by the Indian orchestra, which was followed by a video giving a glimpse of the achievements of the school. The Principal, Dr.Saini thanked Dr.Rajan for taking out time from his busy schedule and said that he was a ‘role model’ for the students. Next in store was a melodious patriotic song by the Hindi music choir. The Western vocal choir sang a melodious self-composed A cappella followed by a beautiful Bharatnatyam group dance presented by the students. The students showcased a performance of the folk dance, ‘Dholu Kunita’. Some students shared their thoughts about the school and how the institution prepares them for what lies ahead in life.
The students presented an energetic dance performance based on the song, ’Khwaab’. The tiny tots of DPS Shiksha Kendra, a school for the underprivileged run on the premises of DPS R.K.Puram, enthralled everyone with a patriotic dance on the freedom struggle. The Economics magazine ‘Econox’ was released by Admiral Chopra and was dedicated to Dr. Rajan. Admiral Chopra, in his interaction with the audience, emphasized on the fact that all great men survey the world to find things to do but visionaries survey the universe to find gaps which can be filled by them. Addressing the gathering,Dr. Rajan said that he was very happy to reconnect with his alma mater. Dr Rajan exhorted the students ‘to do what they enjoy’ and to remember that luck plays a huge role in life. According to him, it is important to accept the challenges in life and to try new things and that there was a great sense of fulfillment in the service of others. His speech left the audience mesmerized. This was followed by a felicitation ceremony where students were awarded for excellence in academics and other fields.
It was a truly enriching experience for one and all.
