The Mathematical Society of Delhi Public School RK Puram organized an Interschool Mathematics Competition titled THE MATHEMATICAL CRUSADE 2017 on 9 December 2017.
The primary objective of the competition was to encourage students to engage in creative and original thinking, to inculcate a spirit of research and to enable them to appreciate the relevance of Mathematics as a discipline to real life. The four events were ‘Mathematics Quiz’, ‘Symphonies of Mathematics’, ‘Model Making’ and ‘Surprise Event’.
A total of 27 schools, represented by more than 250 students from Delhi and around participated in this grand event.
Mr. Anil Kathuria, Head of the Mathematics Department, Ms. S.K. Nagalakshmi and Ms. Tandeep Kaur, Teachers-In-Charge, Mathematics Lab & Technology Centre, along with the Mathematics Department and the students of the Mathematical Society, coordinated the event.
The event was introduced by the President of the Mathematical Society, Anshuman Gupta, who welcomed the judges of the event and wished all participants good luck for their upcoming competitions.
The Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal along with the judges formally released the annual Mathematics magazine of the school, Mathyard 2017.
In her welcome address, the Principal glorified the importance of mathematics, as it forms the basis of finding the solution to several difficulties in life. She added that winning or losing is a part of competition and one should accept the defeat gracefully .
In the event ‘Symphonies of Mathematics’ the students displayed their song-writing and musical abilities, as energetic, self composed pieces containing mathematically oriented lyrics were performed on stage by the participants. The first prize in this category went to The Indian School, while the second and third prizes were won by The Green Fields School and DPS Noida, respectively.
The Quiz had two rounds – the preliminary round and the final round. The winners were DPS Rohini followed by DPS Faridabad and DPS Dwarka.
In the Model-Making competition, participants were asked to create a useful, well presented model based on any mathematical concept. The first, second and third awards were bagged by The Indian School, DAV Public School, Gurugram and DPS Rohini respectively.
The Surprise Event took place in successive stages. The first position was held by DPS Rohini,the second and third positions were held by DPS Faridabad and DPS Mathura Road, respectively.
The overall trophy went to DPS Rohini. The overall runner-up was The Indian School and DPS Faridabad was the second runner-up.
The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by the Vice Principal, Dr. Renu Nayar. She congratulated the students and the teachers for the grand success of the event.
