Sway 2017, the second interschool Western dance competition organized by the Western Dance Society (WDS) of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram for classes 9 to 12 was held on October 28, 2017.
A total of 20 schools took part in the event, which was divided into two categories- ‘Accent’ (Group performance) and ‘Knockout’ (Solo performance). The competing dance forms included Jazz, Contemporary, Ballet and Hip-hop.
Renowned dance experts Mr. Benjamin Jacob and Ms. Devasmita Sharma were invited to judge the event. They are principal dancers and senior faculty members at Danceworx, one of the finest dance institutes in India.
The event began with the felicitation of the judges with a token of regard by our esteemed Principal Ms. Vanita Sehgal. Describing dance as an exquisite form of art, Ms. Sehgal encouraged students to learn dancing adding that she found student-dancers “phenomenally inspirational”.
Also present at the event were Vice Principals, Ms. Anita Singh and Ms. Padma Srinivasan, the Head of the Department of Music and Dance, Ms. Aditi Sarkar with her team of teachers, along with the teacher in-charge, Ms. Preeti Pratihari.
A small video of the achievements and history of WDS was followed by an enthralling series of performances against a backdrop of hypnotic lighting and captivating effects.
Soon after, the competition began with the Knockout category, wherein the dancers enthusiastically performed solo, giving way to the next category Accent, where group performances were presented. At the end of the event, the judges addressed the gathering, enlightening the participants with valuable feedback and constructive criticism.
The first prize in the Knockout category was bagged by The Heritage School, Rohini while the second prize was awarded to St. Francis De Sales School, Janakpuri. The first prize in the Accent category went to Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, while Modern School, Barakhamba Road were the runners up.
Vice Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan proposed the vote of thanks and wished the students a successful future. The event was a huge success.
