Strengthening Foundations of Teaching Mathematics in Senior Secondary Classes

In-service Teacher Development Programme 3rd-6th November 2016

A four day workshop titled Strengthening Foundations of Teaching Mathematics in Senior Secondary Classes was organized by the Delhi Public School Society from 3rd to 6th November 2016 at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram for the Post Graduate Teachers, on whom lies the responsibility of the performance in the CBSE Board for Class XII. 44 PGTs from 26 branches of Delhi Public Schools across the country participated in this programme.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was the Chairman of the DPS Society, Mr.V.K Shunglu, Also present on the occasion was Dr. Zeenat Khader, Jt. Secretary, DPS Society; Mr. Anil Kumar, Principal, DPS Faridabad; Dr. M. A. Prasad, Dr. Alok Kumar and Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Principal of the host school, DPS R.K. Puram.

The event began with the lighting of the lamp. Dr. Zeenat Khader, delivered the welcome address where she briefed the participants about the genesis of the programme.This was followed by a mesmerizing rhythmic yoga performance and Shloka recital by the students of DPS R.K Puram. Mr. Anil Kumar, Principal of DPS Faridabad gave the overview of the workshop.

The Chairman, Mr. V. K Shunglu welcomed all the participants and resource experts. He stated that, ‘Mathematics is the language of modern civilization’ and all efforts should be made to spread the message that Mathematics should be learnt by each and every student.

Ms. Vanita Sehgal proposed the vote of thanks and the inaugural ceremony concluded with the National Anthem.

In the workshops sessions, Dr. M.A. Prasad of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai covered the topic ‘Vectors and 3D’ and made it very interesting by presenting in a very lucid manner, the three approaches to the learning of vectors. Dr. Alok Kumar of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai attempted to drill in the simple concepts of ‘Relations and Functions’ through a question bank. Prof. Purkayastha of Indian Statistical Institute of Kolkata covered the topic of ‘Permutations and Combinations’ .Through his spirited, lucid and simple examples on the Binomial Theorem, Dr. Arshad Majeed, a renowned Resource expert from Delhi drilled confidence in the teachers to motivate the students.Prof. Prithwijit De, of TIFR made the sessions on Trigonometry enjoyable for the teachers, as he made it practical through questionnaires and exercises. Dr. Amit Kumar of IIT, Delhi covered the ticklish subject of ‘Probability’ in a practical manner.

In the valedictory function on 6th November, those present were Dr.Zeenat Khader, Jt. Secretary, DPS Society; Mr. Anil Kumar, Principal, DPS Faridabad; Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Principal, DPS R.K Puram and Dr. Alok Kumar. Certificates of participation were given to all the participants. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr.Anil Kathuria, Coordinator of the Department of Mathematics. On the whole, the workshop has enthused one and all and is bound to pave the way for strengthened the teaching of Mathematics.
