Science behind Rituals

On 3 May, 2011, Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram’s Sanskrit Department organized a lecture by the eminent cardiologist, Padmashri Dr. K.K. Aggarwal on “Science behind Rituals”.

The programme began with Ganesh Vandana and the welcome of the main speaker by the Principal, Dr. D.R.Saini, followed by the lecture and an interactive question-&-answer session with the students. Dr. Aggarwal threw light on how seemingly baseless rituals and traditions actually have a solid scientific basis: he linked the tradition of eating gram (Chana) and jaggery (Gur) on a fasting day to ensuring the intake of iron by the individual. Bathing in the river in the morning during a particular season (Magh) is to ensure the requisite levels of Vitamin D, to quote a few.

The Vice-Principal Mrs. Shobha Mehta gave certificates to the students for outstanding performances in various Sanskrit activities.

The Head of the Department, Dr. Asha Lata Pandey reiterated how Science and Sanskrit complement each other and gave the vote of thanks.

The programme ended with “Shanti Path”, a traditional prayer, exhorting the elements of nature to be benevolent- a befitting conclusion for an enlightening programme.
