Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram hosted the national finals of the Annual Inter DPS Western Vocal Music Festival on 15th October 2011. The Festival held under the aegis of the DPS Society was conducted in different zones to select the winners and first runner-ups in different categories- Solo and Group performance in genres like Pop, Country, Gospel and Rock and roll. The winners consequently entered the finals. The festival was organized to celebrate in the spirit of togetherness and the joy of music. The occasion was graced by the presence of Mrs. Renu Mital, Director of DPS Society and the Convener of the programme. She welcomed the participants and declared the competition open. The Principal, Dr.D.R.Saini addressed the students and wished the participants the best of luck. Vice Principal, Mrs.Shobha Mehta was also present to encourage the participants.
The event was judged by eminent pianist and senior musician, Mr. Basil Miranda who has been honoured with the Best Teacher’s Award by the Government of Delhi, Y.M.C.A and President of India. He’s also famous for teaching various musicians and bands like Parikrama, Silk Root etc. Mr. Ritesh Khokar, Representative of the Associated Board of Royal School of Music, London for Delhi region; as well as Mr. Stephen Marazzi, Director of Delhi Children’s Ensemble, judged the competition. Mr. Khokar is currently the Director Head of the chain of Bridge Music Academy institutions. Mr. Marazzi is known for the vocal music workshops conducted by him in various institutions.
Fifteen schools of the DPS society who had won in their respective zones participated and were assessed on melody, harmony, rhythm ,choice of songs/ self composition and over-all impression. Songs by Boyzone, Whitney Houston, Beyonce and other music icons enthralled the audience. The judges praised the high level of performance of the singers. Impressed with the dramatic symphonies brought out by the various schools, Mr Marazzi remarked that the element of drama would bring in a ‘new dimension to music’.
A valedictory function followed. The chief guest was Padma shri awardee and Member of DPS Society, Mrs.Shovana Narayan. She is one of the recognized legends in the annals of dance today and her name is synonymous with kathak. Mrs Narayan is also a visiting lecturer at the Theater Wissenschaft, University of Vienna. Mrs Narayan praised the students for ‘nurturing their hidden creativity’ and emphasized on the importance of the ‘wholesome development of personality’ and the crucial role of the fine arts in the process. Other guests comprised Mrs.Bindu Sehgal, Principal, DPS Vasant Kunj, Mrs.Surjeet Khanna, Principal, DPS Vidyut Nagar, Dadri; Mr.P.C.Bose, Nominee Advisory Board, DPS R.K.Puram Managing Committee and his wife. Mrs.Anita Singh, Headmistress, DPS R.K.Puram and Mrs.Archana Pental, Headmistress, DPS Vasant Vihar were also present on the occasion.
The results were declared. In the solo category, the first prize was bagged by DPS Vasant Kunj while DPS R.K.Puram and DPS Panipat City stood second and third respectively. In the group song category, the first position was awarded to DPS Dimapur. DPS R.K.Puram and DPS Vidyut Nagar, Dadri shared the second position. The Overall best performance category was won by DPS Vasant Kunj followed by DPS R.K.Puram and DPS Dimapur in the second and third positions respectively.
The melodious songs and the amazing talent of the singers captivated the audience and the event was a truly memorable one.
