“Matsoc”, the Mathematical Society of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram organized its Annual Mathematics Symposium on 20th December 2014. 44 schools from across the country participated in the various competitive events organised by the society.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr. Atul Nischal, Managing Director of Elipsis Consulting Pvt. Ltd. The Principal, Dr. D.R. Saini; The Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta; Dr.(Mrs.) Sushma Suneja Head of the Mathematics department, Mr. Anil Kathuria, teacher In-charge of the Mathematics laboratory and all the teachers of the Mathematics department were present on the occasion.
The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp and felicitation of the Chief Guest followed by a cultural event, with a mellifluous performance by the school orchestra. The students enthralled the audience with their mesmerizing ballet and beatbox performance. They explained the connection of Mathematics with dance and music. This was followed by a presentation on prime numbers.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Atul Nischal addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of mathematics and problem solving in everyday life. ‘Mathyard’, the new edition of the school Maths magazine was released. The Presidents of the Matsoc welcomed all the participants and highlighted the achievements of the students in various inter school competitions.
The program consisted of five competitive events including Problem solving, a Maths quiz, a Model making competition and a Surprise event. The quiz and the surprise event consisted of a preliminary and a final round. In the Model making event, students had to assemble a mathematical model on the spot. The judges for this event were Dr. Jonaki Ghosh, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Elementary Education, Lady Sri Ram College, University of Delhi and Dr. Haneet Gandhi, Assistant Professor in Dept. of Education, University of Delhi. Other highlights of the event were the exhibition of Mathematical models and presentations by the host school and showcase of the movie ‘The Genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan’.
Dr.Amitabha Tripathi, Professor in Department of Mathematics, IIT Delhi, graced the occasion with a guest lecture. He enlightened everyone with an incredible insight into prime numbers.
In the prize distribution ceremony, the overall winner of the event was Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram but it being the host school, the prize was passed on to Delhi Public School , Dwarka. The overall first Runner up was Delhi Public school, Rohini and the second runner up Delhi Public School, Noida.
This event served as an effective forum for all math enthusiasts to share their interests and was an enriching experience for one and all.
