“Physoc”, the Physics Society of Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram hosted the Edison Convention – an International-school Physics Symposium on 9th December 2015.
560 students from 40 schools from all over India, and abroad participated in this event. Students participated in various on-site events. There were also two online events in which 160 students participated.
The Edison Convention was presided over by the chief guests Dr. Muktesh Chander; IPS, and Special Commissioner (Traffic) Delhi Police, and Dr. Abani Mohan Mandal, Nuclear Scientist from Inter University Particle Accelerator and Mr Ankur Suman,Creative Head at RK Swamy BBDO. The Principal, Dr. D.R.Saini; The Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta, and Mr J.S. Virdi; Head of Department of Physics, and Mrs. Archna Deepak; teacher in charge of ‘Physoc’ were also present.
The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp, and felicitation of the chief guests. The school choir set the tempo with a mellifluous song. Dr. D.R. Saini addressed the gathering, and extended a warm welcome to all the guests. He spoke about the importance of physics, and how events like these allow children to meet with people having similar interests. Dr. Mandal spoke to the audience about the presence of physics in the different spheres of life, and motivated the children to delve into the invention of sustainable technologies. Dr. Muktesh Chander had an interactive session with the audience, discussing the various laws, and theories of physics that have led to progression in our lives.
There were two online, and four on site events. The onsite events included a “Quiz” in which there were four rounds, “Ad-dict” where the students enacted advertisements which had topics like ‘Earth 2.0’, and ‘Invisibility Kid’, “Demo” where children presented scientific models, “Surprise Event” in which children were given clues leading to a treasure hunt spanning the entire school. There were two online events – “Comic Strip” in which students were asked to submit comic strips on different topics, and “Phyctures” in which participants clicked pictures, and explained the idea behind their pictures.
The events were judged by a panel of respected judges comprising Mr. Devanik Saha, Mr. Ankur Suman, and Mr. Rishabh Sanghi. A video showcasing the events that took place throughout the day was shown. It received an immense amount of appreciation from its spectators.
“Quiz” was won by Modern School Barakhamba Road, while Sanskriti School came second, and DPS Vasant Kunj came third. DPS Vasant Kunj won the first prize in “Ad-Dict”, followed by DPS Panipat, and DPS Meerut in the second and third places respectively. “Demo” was bagged by Red Rose Public School, the second position by Hansraj Model School while the third prize went to Springdales, Dhaula Kuan. Modern School, Barakhamba Road secured the first position in “Surprise Event”, Convent of Jesus and Mary School came second while DPS Dwarka third. “Comic Strip” was won by DPS Vijaypur followed by the British School, and DPS Gurgaon in second, and third position respectively. DPS Vasant Kunj came first in “Phyctures” while Springdales Dhaula Kuan came second, and DPS Gurgaon third. The overall winner was Modern School, Barakhamba Road; followed by DPS Vasant Kunj as the 1st runner up. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. J. S. Virdi.
The event enlightened all its participants, and onlookers. The Edison Convention was successful in spiking their curiosity for Physics as they participated in all the dynamic events. Students left the event with an enthusiasm to discover, and learn more about Physics.
