In the words of Peter Drucker, “Business is neither a science, nor an art. It’s a practice.” Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, as a part of the initiative taken by the Business Studies Society, hosted the annual International Business Mélange, on the 27th and 28th of August 2015. This year, the event garnered massive participation from schools all over the globe, including the USA, Qatar, Bahrain, Indonesia, and from the leading schools in India adding up to a phenomenal 72 entries.
The event was enriched by the presence of Dr. P. C. Jain, former Principal of Sri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi, as the Chief Guest. The other judges for the event were, Dr. Rachna Jawa, Head of Department of Commerce, Sri Ram College of Commerce; Dr. Vikas Mehra, Professor of Marketing and Strategic Management, Lal Bahadur Institute of Management Studies, New Delhi; Dr. Raj Kumar Sah, Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India; Mr. Sunil Khairnar, Social Entrepreneur and Founder of Indigram Group; Mrs. Bhuvana Ravi, Director of Drishya Education Scholarship Foundation; and Dr. Mallika Kumar, Associate Professor, Commerce Department at Sri Ram College of Commerce. Also present were the Principal, Dr. D. R. Saini; Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta; and the Head of Department of Business Studies, Mrs. Rashmi Malhotra, along with her team of teachers.
The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp, followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest and the judges. The Principal, Dr. D. R. Saini addressed the gathering and extended a warm welcome to all present. The Chief Guest, Dr. P.C. Jain talked about how dreams are the first steps towards achieving success in life. The Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta also addressed the audience, and encouraged all the participants to put in their best efforts. A mesmerising classical composition was delivered by the school orchestra. This was followed by a Bharatnatyam performance accompanied by a mellifluous song by the Indian choir. A video showcasing the achievements and activities of the Business Studies Society was also screened.
There were seven competitive events. The online events comprised cartoon strip making, “E-Banner” in which students had to make web advertisements, and a limerick composing competition on the principles of management. The on-site events included “Idea Designing” in which participants were supposed to create a fictitious company; “Ads Act” in which students had to make a more innovative version of a product they chose; “Mock Stock” which was a simulation of a hypothetical stock market; and a two round quiz competition about business terms and personalities, brand names and tag lines.
All winners were awarded trophies and certificates. The cartoon strip making competition was won by DPS R. K. Puram, but being the host school, it was passed on to Modern School, Barakhamba Road; while Sanskriti School came second and St. Xaviers Senior Secondary School came third. DPS R. K. Puram won the “E-Banner”, but being the host school, it was passed on to Amity International, Saket; followed by Goodley Public School and DPS Noida in the second and third positions respectively. The limerick composing competition was won by DPS R. K. Puram, but being the host school, it was passed on to DPS Vasant Kunj; the second position was bagged by St. Xaviers, Shahbad, while the third prize went to Manav Sthali Public School. Gyan Bharti Public School secured the first position in “Mock Stock”, while Sanskriti School came second and New Era Public School came third. The quiz was won by Amity International, Saket; while DPS Vasant Kunj and New Era Public School won the second and third positions respectively. “Idea Designing” was won by Modern School, Barakhamba Road, while Gyan Bharti Public School came second, and DPS Vasant Kunj came third. DPS R. K. Puram secured the first place in “Ads Act”, but being the host school, it was passed on to DPS Vasant Kunj; with Amity International, Saket and Modern School, Barakhamba Road in the second and third places respectively. The overall trophy was won by Modern School, Barakhamba Road.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Head of Department of Business Studies, Mrs. Rashmi Malhotra. The event was an enriching experience for all present.
