International Business Mélange 2014

Bill Gates said “It is fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure” and on this note the International Business Mélange was declared open. The event was hosted by Delhi Public School, R.K Puram on the 28th and 29th of August, 2014 and was an initiative of the Business Studies Society. The event received registration from over 65 schools including schools from Malaysia, U.A.E and Nepal. This year, the mélange comprised of the following on-site events: the Business Quiz, the Visionnaire, The Mock Stock and the Ads Act. The online events included the e-poster making based on unequal opportunities, caricature making on corporate corruption and the sonnet writing on business ethics.

Dr. P.C Jain, Principal of Sri Ram College of Commerce, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The other judges for the event were Dr Vandana Jain, Assistant Professor, SRCC; Dr Rachna Jawa, Associate Professor, SRCC; Mr Sandeep Sethi, Education Officer, CBSE; Dr Vinita Dar, Associate Professor, I.P. College; Dr. Mallika Kumar, Associate Professor, SRCC and Ms. Neeti Dixit, Guest Faculty at Miranda House and SRCC. The Principal, DPS R.K. Puram, Dr. D.R. Saini; the Vice Principal, Mrs. Shobha Mehta and Mrs Rashmi Malhotra, Head of the Business Studies Department, welcomed the guests.

The cultural programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The guests were welcomed with a soothing symphony by the Indian Orchestra and were felicitated with a bouquet by the principal. This was followed by a melodious song by the Indian choir and a Bharatanatyam performance. A presentation portraying the achievements of the Business Studies Society of the school was showcased before the audience. Next in line was a scintillating French choreographed dance. The cultural programme also included a self-composed A cappella by the Western Choir and was a tribute to the Indian farmers. The chief guest, while addressing the audience, highlighted the fact that business and economics are the driving force of a country.

Stephen Fleming, former captain of the New Zealand National Cricket Team graced the occasion and in his address to the audience, congratulated the school on its success and motivated the students to seize the moment and grab every opportunity that comes their way.

The Ads Act involved the students marketing imaginary products like ‘Bolt Shoes’, ‘Hatred fire extinguisher’, “Einstein Memory Pills’ and “Anupam Kher shampoo. There were a few Western and Bollywood dance performances between the ads, to keep the audience entertained. The Mock Stock tested the skill and strategy of the students. The event, modelled on stock exchanges the world over, required the students to create and manage their own portfolios which helped them to get an insight of share transactions by trading on real time basis. The Visionnaire which required the students to form a fictitious company and create a presentation that showed the social purpose which was the essence of the company, saw a total of 53 schools participating in the event.

The business quiz, the most intellectual of the competitions, was conducted to test the knowledge of students in the fields of business viz. terms, taglines and brands. It consisted of 2 rounds and started with a questionnaire. Only six teams out of about 40 cleared the preliminary round and went on to the finals. The entries for the caricature, sonnet writing and poster making, however, were sent online.

The judges, Dr.Saini and Ms. Rashmi Malhotra, along with her team of teachers distributed the prizes. The results for the online events are as follows:

The overall trophy for the online events was won by DPS R.K. Puram, but being the host, it was passed on to DPS Noida. In the onsite events also the winner was DPS R.K.Puram but the trophy was passed on to Amity International School, Saket.
