Exun 2018

The 23rd Annual Inter-School IT Symposium ‘EXUN 2018’ was hosted by Exun Clan, the Technology Club of Delhi Public School, RK Puram on 27-28 October 2018. The event was sponsored by UniRely and Digital India and co-sponsored by Athena Education and Pearl Academy. This event was the first National Technology Symposium for and by the students.

Established in 1992, the Exun Clan was the brainchild of Mr. Mukesh Kumar, Head of the Computer Science Department and an enthusiastic group of IT aficionados. Short for “Experts Unlimited”, Exun is one of the most renowned clubs, giving students an opportunity to display their abilities in the vast field of IT. The club believes that its members are part of a strong family, which is exemplified by their motto, “We, not I”.

This year, with 1729 registrations from 132 schools, Exun along with The Gaming Club – Domain Square+, Robotics Club – RoboKnights and Cubing Club -CubXL organised 21 different IT events including an Online Cryptic Hunt– Sudocrypt and Sudolocus and a Girl’s Surprise Event.

EXUN 2018 – DAY 1

The occasion commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The event was graced by the Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal, and Mr Mukesh Kumar along with his group of Computer Science Teachers and Tech Aid crew.

The Principal, in her welcome address, expressed her absolute admiration of the club and the rapid advances they have made in the IT field. Furthermore, she articulated on the significance of technology and how she, herself cannot do without it. She emphasized upon how technology is a very powerful weapon, and should not be misused. Towards the end of her speech, she rendered her gratitude to the entire Computer Science Department, praised them for being one of the most seasoned clubs and called them the backbone of the school.

The audience was then addressed by Mr. Mukesh Kumar. He welcomed everyone on behalf of DPS RK Puram and thanked the Principal for giving him the opportunity to continue the legacy of the club and supporting the organization of such a big event. He ended his address by an inspirational quote “If you win, you win prizes, but if you lose, you still win experience.”

The Presidents of the Exun Clan, Domain Square+ and CubXL also addressed the participants, talking about the changes the symposium saw from its past iteration to the present and also the exposure the clubs have provided to them.

The Introduction Video for Exun 2018 was presented by the Exun Clan, providing a briefing about the particulars of the event and achievements of the club.

The symposium had pre-started with Sudocrypt, where the group behind the online cryptic hunt rethought the thought by including new highlights like a robotized imply framework and SudoQuests, which were commended by the participants. On this occasion, Exun also released  13th issue of the Annual Magazine – “UnderScore”.

The first day included the prelims of Domain Square+ Gaming, Cubing events, RoboWars, Group Discussion, Line Follower, Junior and Senior Quizzes, Crossword, Gaming, Turing Test, Mar-athon, Hardware, Spacetech, and Programming.

The Group Discussion was conducted in three rounds. An offsite preliminary, followed by the semi-finals and finals, both of which were onsite and conducted on Day 1.

Build was an event wherein students were competing against each other in all aspects of software development. The event was judged by Mr. Neel Lakhwani, a  DPS Alumnus.

Crossword was conducted in two rounds, an online preliminary and an onsite final event. The onsite event included questions which were pun based and related to tech in any way possible.

The basis of the Spacetech event was the on growing influx of investments of IT companies in the development of space technologies. The event, judged by Mr. Hersh Aditya Singh, Mr. Sibesh Kar, and Mr. Saksham  Arora was an on the spot competition where the various participants were given a prompt related to devising algorithms of detecting equations of spacecraft trajectories and asteroid capture mechanisms.

The Gaming event, organized by Domain Square+ focussed on the abilities of gamers to adapt to situations as they were presented with games likes Spellinky, Kitten Squad, Supermonkey Ball and Mega Man.

Robowars was hosted by the RoboKnights, where students battled it out with their self-made robots in an intense arena comprising of multiple rounds and cheered on by an enthusiastic audience. Turing Test was a written test that assessed students computation linguistic skills.

EXUN 2018 – DAY 2

The second day of the event included SpaceTech, Sudocrypt, Junior Quiz, Senior Quiz, Domain 2+ Gaming, Delhi NCR Gaming, Build, Hardware, Competitive Programming, Surprise Event, CubXL and RoboWars.

Sudocrypt saw students from various illustrious schools of the NCR region scrambling to comb every nook and corner of the school in their pursuit of clues.

The 6 teams which qualified in the preliminary round headed to the AVH for the final on-stage round of the interactive Junior Quiz. With the “Infinite Pounce and Bounce Throughout” system in play, all 6 teams which qualified for the final round of the Senior Quiz answered a number of questions on a diverse range of topics such as Technology, I.T, Gaming etc. Both quizzes were conducted by quizmasters, Mr. Gursartaj Singh Nijjar and Mr. Bharat Kashyap.

Domain 2+ saw the adroit gamers exhibit their finesse in gaming as they were presented with games likes Xonotic, DragonBall FighterZ, and GTA online. The founders of Domain 2+ Mr. Sarthak Pal, and Mr. Siddarth Maharishi judged the event.

Equipped with PlayStation controllers and immense fortitude, gaming enthusiasts from all over Delhi NCR playing FIFA 18 and Call Of Duty partook in the Delhi-NCR Jr. Gaming Championship. Mr. Joy Sachdeva and Mr. Rohan Bhatia, both alumni judged the event.

The finals of Build, a 2-day hackathon based on a prompt given on the spot consisted of participants developing and pitching their innovative products to the judges. The event was judged by Mr. Rohan Dhar and Mr. Neel Lakhwani.

The finals of Hardware were a test of practical and theoretical knowledge of hardware and networking. The event included a written test, the dismantling, and assembling of computer hardware amongst others. The event was judged by Mr. Abhishek Yadav.

In collaboration with the organization ‘Women Who Code Delhi’, Exun 2018 featured a workshop and an exciting Surprise Event for girls, with an aim to provide them with a platform to showcase their talent by designing an interactive web game. Ms. Jap Leen Kaur Jolly and Ms. Sukriti Chaudhary from this organization judged the event.

Rapid manoeuvres and dexterity of hands characterized the Cubing Event, the finalists of which went head to head to solve a 2×2, 3×3, and a Pyraminx cube.

Competitive Programming saw the participants face a plethora of logic, algorithm and data structure based problems which were evaluated on the basis of time taken. The event was judged by Mr. Sankush Gupta.

The participants of SpaceTech continued to work on the prompt given the previous day which they presented to a panel of judges comprising of esteemed alumni,  Mr. Hersh Aditya Singh, Mr. Saksham Arora, Mr. Sibesh Kar, and Mr. Aditya Sengupta as well as Mr. Antonio Fowl Stark, Executive Director, Space Generation Advisory Council, South Korea.

In one final showdown, the robots battled it out in the arena, each trying to emerge as the victor in Robowars. The event was judged by Mr. Aniansh Raj Singh and Mr. Abhishek Saroha, former Presidents, RoboKnights.

The award distribution commenced with an acknowledgment of the constant guidance and support of the Principal, Ms. Vanita Sehgal, the HOD Computer Science, Mr. Mukesh Kumar, and the entire Computer Science Department. The event was graced by the presence of eminent alumni who were presented with mementos by Ms. Vanita Sehgal and Mr. Mukesh Kumar.

Mr. Mukesh Kumar concluded the Symposium by thanking the judges, participating students, and teachers of all the schools, partners and finally the Exun team of teachers and students for making the occasion a grand success.
