The students and staff of the school started Earth Day celebration by dressing in Green. This helped in realizing the significance of the day and our contribution towards ‘Saving our planet Earth’. The topic of the day’s morning assembly was, ‘Lend a hand to save the land’. Children depicted environment friendly habits like ‘Say no to polybags’, ‘Save energy’, ‘Save water and other natural resources’ through a skit and a video presentation .Earth Day Pledge was taken by the students and the parents. ‘Panchtatva’, the environment club of DPS R.K.Puram released special badges and certificates, which will be awarded to the students who take initiative towards environment conservation and for their distinguished service towards green, clean and sustainable practices in the school.
The Principal, Dr D.R.Saini highlighted the role of students in saving the natural resources and guided them to develop ‘green habits’, starting from school, like switching off lights when leaving the class room, using the school bus instead of personal car, saving paper etc
Various competitions were organized for different classes like model making on alternative sources of energy, poster making on ‘Save our earth’, Photography Competition on flora & fauna around us, Slogan writing on ‘I am eco friendly because…’,Logo designing and SMS Writing. The selected entries of these competitions were displayed in the senior Biology Lab. Ms Dimple Menon and Ms Neelam Ajwani guided the students in making the models. The creativity of the students was visible in the models which included use of water as energy source, green spaces, from garbage to gold.
Sapling Plantation was organized outside the school. Saplings of Aurocaria and Bougainvillea were planted by the Principal, Dr. D.R. Saini; the Vice-Principal, Ms. Shobha Mehta and Head Mistresses, Ms. Vanita Sehgal and Ms. Anita Singh along with Mr.S. K. Arora, Head of the Biology Department. The Principal, lauded the efforts of the Biology Department. Ms Kusum Yadav made the arrangements and encouraged the students for plantation drive.
Later seven students of DPS R.K.Puram (Yash Chhabra, Kusumita Chhabra and Akankhya Panigrahi of Class XI, Prithvi Rana, Angelina Dash, Kaushitaki Sharma and Shefali Mehra of Class IX along with Ms Niva Chhonkar, Incharge of Environment Club attended an Earth Day Program on ‘Environment and Youth’ at the American Centre. The programme included a presentation and an interactive session and was sponsored by The Centre for Environment Education and Earth Day Networks.
Earth Day was celebrated by The Department of Environment, at the Delhi Secretariat where Mr. Asif Ahmad Khan, the Minister of Environment graced the occasion and addressed the students. A poster making competition on the theme ‘Conservation of Water’ was conducted. A street play was enacted by students to raise concern about the deteriorating resources of water, air, forests. The students were encouraged to adopt a tree and take care for it. Our school was represented by Anshuman, Udbav Seth,Rohan Dhar of Class X and Shrijita Anand and Jasmine of Class IX. Ms Reema Khosla accompanied them.
The Environment Club of Modern School, Barakhamba Road organised a Digital Poster Making Competition on the occasion of Earth Day in which Ishany of VIII J won the First Prize.
