“Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high…” was Rabindranath Tagore’s ideal free country. As we celebrate India’s 70th Independence Day, it becomes imperative to reflect, are we really free? While we are trying to break the shackles of British imperialism, we also need to question ourselves about the social evils that are gnawing at our society and hampering our growth and development. If we have to soar high like a falcon, the youth of the nation that needs to realize that they are the chosen ones on whose shoulders India’s flight now rests. They need to move beyond the “dead habit(s)” (Tagore). They are the ones who need to dream and explore new horizons. As V.S. Naipaul aptly wrote in A Bend In The River, “[A]fter all, we make ourselves according to the ideas we have of our possibilities.”
