Exun 2020 – International IT Symposium

The Annual IT Symposium ‘Exun 2020’ was hosted by Exun Clan, the Technology Club of Delhi Public School, RK Puram was held for the 25th time in ‘Exun Week’, from 15th to 22nd November, 2020. The event was sponsored by Athena Education and BML Munjal University and supported by Wolfram, Devfolio and Women Who Code, Delhi. This event was the 3rd National IT Symposium for and by the tech enthusiast students under the supervision of the Computer Science Department of the school, with select competitions enjoying international participation. 

A prominent feature of Exun Week this year were the various Exun Talks, given by experienced alumni and professionals such as Andre Cardoso, the creator of a popular GameDev YouTube channel – Mix and Jam. Additionally, a Fireside chat was organised with some of our most-experienced alumni discussing their careers and the contemporary tech landscape. The introduction for the closing ceremony was given by Rahul Merwah, the founder of Exun Clan, back in 1991.

This year, with 800+ registrations from 50 schools, Exun along with The Gaming Club-DomainSquare+, Robotics Club – RoboKnights and Cubing Club – CubXL organised 22 different IT events including an Online Cryptic Hunt– SudoCrypt and a Girls in Tech event.

Exun Week was preceded by  SudoCrypt 10.0, the tenth iteration of Exun Clan’s flagship online cryptic hunt, held from 9-10th November. The format of the hunt was redesigned, shifting from a traditional cryptic hunt to a text adventure based hunt. More than 1000 participants took part in SudoCrypt, accumulating a total of 200,000+ points. Preliminary rounds for Competitive Programming, Group Discussion and the SpaceTech event took place before Exun Week commenced as well.

On the occasion of the 25th Exun, Exun Clan also released the 15th issue of its Annual Magazine – “UnderScore”, available at exun.co/underscore.

EXUN WEEK: Schedule

On the first day, Sunday the 15th, the symposium was inaugurated in the opening ceremony, where the Introductory Video (exun.co/video) for Exun 2020 was presented by Exun Clan, showcasing brief particulars about the events and the achievements of the club. On the same day, the Hardware and Machine Learning tasks were released. 

The Principal, in her welcome address, expressed her admiration for the club and the rapid advances they have made in the IT field. Furthermore, she articulated on the significance of technology and how she herself cannot do without it. At the same time, she emphasised the human aspect of life, and described how technology is a very powerful weapon, and should not be misused. Towards the end of her speech, she congratulated the entire Computer Science Department, calling them the backbone of the school, and praised Exun for being one of the most seasoned clubs.

On Monday, tasks for the RoboKnights BISCUITS event were released, the Quiz and Crossword prelims took place, and a tutorial workshop was organised by Women Who Code, Delhi for the Girls in Tech event which continued into the next day.

On Tuesday, the tasks for the Build events, Hackathon, Designathon, and Unreality were released. The Surprise and DomainSquare+ Gaming prelims also took place, along with semis of the Lockout programming event.

Wednesday started with the Turing Test (Computational Linguistics) competition, followed by the Surprise event finals which continued onto the next day. 

Thursday had the Group Discussion semifinals, along with the Girls in Tech prelims and DomainSquare+ Gaming finals. On Friday, the Group Discussion and Make-a-Thon event concluded with their finals.

Saturday began with a bang, with all 3 Build events, Hackathon, Designathon and Unreality having demos. Next, the SpaceTech semifinals and finals pitches took place, along with Lockout finals and Cubing finals which continued the next day.

On Sunday, the day started with “Exun Fireside Chat” (exun.co/fireside)  with 3 Exun alumni prominently involved with the tech landscape – Mr. Gaurav Lochan (President, 1994-95), Mr. Saif Hasan (President, 1994-95) and Mr. Manas Mittal (President, 2000-01). Afterwards, the Crossword finals took place, followed by the Quizzing finals.Finally to conclude the symposium, the closing ceremony was held, which started with addresses by the Exun founder, Mr. Rahul Merwah, Mr. Ankit Wadhwa (President, 1999-2000), Gursartajj Singh Nijjar (President, 2006-07), Ananay Arora (President, 2016-17) and Teacher In-Charge Mr. Mukesh Kumar sir, followed by announcement of winners and expression of gratitude towards participants for attending the event.

EVENTS

Group Discussion was conducted in 3 rounds. A preliminary round had participants use harmless modern internet slang such as “gg”, “tbh”, “ngl” and others while expressing their argument. This was followed by semi-finals and finals, with the latter having a question answer round. Mr. Sameer Chadha, Mr. Shiv Sethi and Mr. Siddhant Shah, alumni of DPS RK Puram and Exun Clan, were the judges for the event.

Build was an event wherein students were competing against each other in all aspects of design, game and software development. The Designathon event had participants working on rebranding their favourite album, and was judged by Mr. Gyan Lakhwani, Mr. Yatharth and Mr. Devansh Gandhi. The Hackathon event was judged by Mr. Sibesh Kar and Mr. Achal Varma. The Unreality (Game Development) event had the dual themes, “Regeneration” and “Entropy”, and was judged by Mr. Ayush Singla, Mr. Anirudh Chauhan and Mr. Bhavya Khandelwal. All were alumni of DPS RK Puram and Exun Clan.

Crossword was conducted in two rounds, a preliminary and a final round. The event included pun-based, tech-related questions. The event was conducted by Mr. Udit Malik, an alumni of DPS RK Puram and Exun Clan.

ExML, the Machine Learning event involved a rich variety of unique yet equally mesmerising machine learning paradigms on display and in use. In the ExML contest, there were a plethora of tasks to choose from, covering the various Machine Learning paradigms. The tasks had a subjective focus, with an emphasis on the quality of data science, perceptible results and data ethics, and each participant had to include a writeup describing their solution and how they came about it, along with their submissions. The event was judged by Mr. Ayush Singla and Mr. Sagnik Anupam, both alumni of DPS RK Puram and Exun Clan.

The basis of the SpaceTech event was the growing importance and applicability of space science in engineering that directly benefits us on Earth, by giving us clearer perspectives and direct returns in the form of technical advancements. The event, judged by Mr. Udit Malik, Mr. Shiv Sethi and Mr. Bhavya Khandelwal, was held in collaboration with the New Delhi Space Society. Participants had to devise innovative methods to traverse the surface of the Moon and provide routes between specified locations. The event culminated with participants pitching their innovations in a semifinal round, followed by an unconventional final where the 3 finalists were given preparation time of an hour to find flaws in the systems of other teams, while also finding aspects which they would like to incorporate in their own system.

Competitive Programming saw the participants face a plethora of problems based on logic, algorithms and data structures. They were evaluated on the basis of the time they took to solve the problems. The online qualifying round saw more than 1000 participants, including 192 international participants, out of which 10 teams battled it out in the onsite finals. 

The Gaming event, organized by DomainSquare+ focussed on the abilities of gamers to adapt to different situations as they were presented with games like Nidhogg, Shovel Knight, Curveball, Super Hexagon, Devil Daggers and Assault Cube. Make-a-Thon, an event based on  designing  innovative  systems with the application of robotics and engineering, and BISCUITS, Build and Design Circuits, events were hosted by RoboKnights. The BISCUITS was judged by Danish Bansal and Pranshu Malik, former Presidents of Roboknights, whereas the Make-a-Thon was judged by Aniansh Raj ,and Shaurya Jain, former Presidents of RoboKnights, along with Vinamr Sachdeva.

Turing Test assessed the skills of participants by testing them on problems based on various computational linguistics paradigms.

In the Open Quiz, the preliminary round was a form, with an online finals where they were required to answer a number of questions on a diverse range of topics such as Technology, I.T, tech-politics, and Gaming. The “Infinite Pounce and Bounce” system was in play throughout the quiz, which was conducted by Mr. Bharat Kashyap, an Exun and DPSRKP alumnus, and Mr. Pranava Dhar, an alumnus of DPS Noida.

Cubing Event, the first day started with war of speed with three solves by each and the average of the three was taken for shortlisting them for final. A total of 24, 9 from 2×2, 9 from 3×3 and 6 from Pyraminx were selected for finals.

In collaboration with the not-for-profit organization ‘Women Who Code, Delhi’, Exun 2020 featured a workshop and a unique ‘Girls in Tech’ event, with an aim to increase female representation in tech fields and provide girls with a platform to showcase their talent. The theme for this year was generative art, where P5.js was used.  The event consisted of two initial interactive workshops to familiarize the participants with the required pre-requisites after which, the preliminary round had participants replicate provided graphics whereas the finals required them to make interactive simulations and animations relating to STEM-concept based prompts.

The Surprise Event consisted of two rounds. The first was a relay of many games ranging from Chess to QuizUp. The final round asked participants to recognize companies based on portfolios and invest in them in hopes to make it big in the stock market. The event was judged by Mr. Aman Verma, Mr. Aaryak Garg and Mr. Aravind Ashok, alumni of DPS RK Puram and Exun Clan.

The DomainSquare+ PC Gaming event focused on the abilities of gamers to adapt to different situations with competitive games like Fistful of Frags in the preliminary rounds, Vector for the semi-finals and Blade Symphony for the Finale. The event had judges Mr. Saharsh Vedi, former President of DS+, Mr. Saumya Gaikwad, Mr. Aravind Ashok and Mr. Aaryak Garg.

To increase the level of excitement and thrill of participating in an “online hardware” event, our Hardware event aimed for a new angle of approach through a unique team-based task format.  Students had to compete against other schools in a Hardware hunt, which had an online platform of operation and had hints stored in an encrypted file. Participants also had to participate in 4 other tasks, including benchmarking and OS review. The event judges were Mr. Aditya Singh and Mr. Danish Bansal, alumnus of Exun Clan and DPSRKP.

The Computer Science Teachers comprising of Mr. Mukesh Kumar, Ms. Hema Jain, Ms. Sangeeta Rana, Mr. Mohitendra Dey, Ms. Shalini Harisukh, Ms. Sarika Kaushal, Ms. Anjana Virmani, Ms. Nandini Dasgupta, Mr. Shekhar Sharma and Mr. Ajitkumar K.G. as a team efficiently organised this grand event along with the support of Tech. Team composed of Mr. Thomas C.A., Mr. Diny Mathew, Mr. K.V.Joseph, Mr. Shankar Giri assisted by Mr. Ram Kumar and Mr. Ramjas.

The student team was led by Shashwat Chandra, Natasha Arya, Amadika Mahapatra, Rian Borah, Kushagra Gupta, Akshit Kumar, Priyanshi Ahuja, Alankar Dutta, and Alhad Sethi. Extraordinary efforts from members and adhocs made the event possible and were greatly appreciated.

Scholar Badge Ceremony 2020 Class XII (Section A-K)

DPS R.K. Puram hosted its much awaited Virtual Scholar Badge Ceremony for Class XII, sections A to K, on 29 November, 2020. The theme for the event was ‘You are a mindset away from winning battles’. 

The online ceremony commenced with the lighting of the lamp. The Performing Arts Society showcased an enthralling virtual western instrumental orchestra that reflected the talent of the budding musicians. 

We were honoured to have Mr. B.K. Chaturvedi, Vice Chairman, Delhi Public School Society and Managing Committee DPS R.K. Puram as the Chief Guest and Mr. Anurag Tripathi, Secretary, Central Board of Secondary Education as the Guest of Honour.

A video presentation about school achievements illustrated the scaling heights conquered by students under the dynamic leadership of the Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan. The exemplary performance of students in academic and non-academic fields highlighted their resilient spirit in the face of these unprecedented circumstances. 

The Principal, Ms. Padma Srinivasan, congratulated the award winners and spoke of the ceremony being a celebration of success and achievement of the students in numerous fields including academics, co-curriculars and extra-curriculars. She highlighted the experiential learning and the breadth of opportunities in the wider curriculum provided to the students at DPS R.K. Puram, along with a diverse and well-rounded education resulting in exceptional performance of the students. She extended her appreciation  to the teachers as well as the support staff for their hard work and dedication in adapting to the developments during these unprecedented times. According to her, a winning mindset can transform a student  to an achiever, winner and conqueror. The Principal remarked that the event was a celebration of such a mindset that results in success. She concluded her speech by expressing gratitude to the supportive parents and wished the students the best of luck for their future endeavours. 

A soulful rendition of ‘Yeh waqt na thehra hai’ was presented in a harmonious melody by the choir, advocating for a strong and unwavering attitude that inspires others during these challenging times. 

Mr. B.K. Chaturvedi, the Chief Guest, commenced his address by congratulating the award winners and their parents for their guidance, encouragement and support to the children. He felicitated the teachers for their immense contribution and for seamlessly adapting to the online mode of teaching. Recalling the huge loss of life during the Bengal famine, he compared it to the ongoing pandemic. He also advised the students to make use of the numerous opportunities available to them as they graduate from school. Drawing analogies between famous French mathematician Rene Descartes’s method of solving a complex mathematical problem by addressing the smaller, simpler parts first to resolving life situations. He further encouraged the students to adopt a four edged approach to life consisting of hard work, honesty, humility and human grit to succeed in life and wished them the very best.

Mr. Anurag Tripathi, the Guest of Honour, expressed his gratitude to the Principal for giving him the opportunity to be a part of the Scholar Badge ceremony and congratulated all the award winners for their achievements. He appreciated the efforts of all the teachers for adopting the new mode of online teaching within a short span of time. He mentioned that the main aim of education is to transform students into good human beings and citizens who contribute to their society and nation. He discussed the salient features of the NEP 2020 and its endeavour to promote experiential learning, creativity, innovation and research. He encouraged the students to utilise the opportunities of a good learning environment at school and urged them to give back to society.

The award ceremony commenced with the felicitation of Gold Medal awardees by the class XII representative, Ms. Kusum Yadav , followed by Blue Tie, Blue Blazer, Blue Badge and Green Badge recipients. Ms. Anubha Gopal then presented the extra-curricular awards which were  the Red Blazer, Red Tie, Pin and Certificate of Appreciation to students who showed exemplary achievements outside the walls of the  classroom. 

The Vice Principal Dr. Renu Nayyar then addressed the gathering and thanked the chief guest and the guest of honour for gracing the occasion with their presence and for sharing their words of wisdom. She congratulated the students for their achievement, hardwork and perseverance and thanked the parents for their support. She thanked the staff and students for the effort put in during these times in organizing the ceremony. 

The event concluded with the national anthem. 

Sweet Beginnings-Learning to Make Kada Prashad

On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, an Online Workshop titled ‘Sweet Beginnings: Learning to make Kada Prashad’ was organized by the Health and Wellness Club of DPS RK Puram on 27 November 2020, for the students of class VI and VIII. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Pushpa Joshi – Assistant Director, Education Partnerships at Indian school of Hospitality, Gurgaon and Chef Gaurav Prasher – Associate Director, Culinary and Practical Arts, Indian School of Hospitality, Gurgaon. The workshop began with the organizers enlightening the students about Guru Nanak and the importance of Kada Prashad in the Sikh culture. Taking on from there, Chef Gaurav made the halwa in front of the students, focussing on the proportions of the ingredients and the appropriate stage to add them to the dish. The result was a delicious dish which was appreciated by the students and the panellists alike. The Head Mistress, Ms. Niva Chhonkar delivered the vote of thanks and said that  this ‘divine halwa’ has its own energy.. The endeavour was greatly appreciated by the parents.The event was coordinated by Ms Akshita Luthra.

Winners ‘Tenalach’- An Inter DPS Environment Festival

DPS Mathura Road organized ‘Tenalach’- An Inter DPS Environment Festival on 27th November 2020. TENALACH is an Irish word used to describe a relationship one has with the land, air and water, a deep connection with nature. These competitions were organized to encourage the young citizens to do their bit in protecting the environment and develop a sense of responsibility and commitment towards the same.The students of  Delhi Public School , R.K. Puram participated in various competitions like The Creator’s Project ,Poetry Writing, AD MAD and Voice It Out.The results of the competitions are as follows:

We were honoured to have Mr. V.K. Shunglu, Chairman, Delhi Public School Society and Managing Committee DPS R.K. Puram as the Chief Guest  and Mr. Mayank Singh, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, United Nations as the Guest of Honour..

He expressed appreciation for the competitive environment offered by DPS R.K. Puram, which seasons its students to endure hardships and navigate their path through hurdles of all sorts. He wished the students success in the transition from school to college and wished them luck in all endeavours. 

Mr. Mayank Singh, the Guest of Honour, expressed his gratitude to the Principal and Mr. V.K. Shunglu for giving him the opportunity to indulge in a thoughtful dialogue with the students. Being an alumnus of DPS R.K. Puram, he explained the various pressures, adversaries and challenges one faces after school, especially during such trying times. He advised the students to choose their battles wisely and focus on their own strengths and interests. He remarked that the path to success carries its trials and tribulations which one can overcome with a healthy and diligent work ethic. He congratulated the students on being outstanding performers and wished them luck.

The Vice Principal Dr. Renu Nayyar then addressed the gathering and congratulated all parents and students in attendance. She proceeded to talk about how success has a different meaning for each individual and advised the high achievers to continue in their endeavours. She thanked the staff and students for the effort put in during these times in organizing the ceremony. 

The event concluded with the national anthem. 

Guru Nanak’s Birthday – Holiday

It is hereby informed to all concerned that, Delhi Public School, RK Puram, Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash will remain closed on Monday, 30th November, 2020  on account of Guru Nanak’s Birthday.

All concerned Students, academic and non-academic staff members are directed to make a note of the above and comply accordingly.

Constitution Day Celebrations 2020- Essay Writing Competition

As part of the annual Constitution Day Celebrations on the 26th of November, the Department of Political science under the able guidance of Ms Vandana Chandoke, conducted an offline Essay Writing Competition for classes XI and XII. 

The participants wrote an essay on Constitution related themes in about 750 words and the organisers got a very good response. The event was coordinated by Ms.Swati Verma

The results of the Essay Writing Competition were :

2nd BMU Inter-School National Constitution Day Debate

26 November 2020 : The school team from the Debating Society participated in the 2nd BMU Inter-School National Constitution Day Debate organised by the Law School of the BML Munjal University on 26November 2020. 

The competition was based on applying and debating Constitutional principles to a fictitious factual scenario and presenting both views on an issue. More than 32 schools from all over the country; including cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR participated in the event. 

The school team of : Drona Sharma (11 V), Shashank Sinha (11 U), Areeb Nabi (12 U) and Manhar Bansal (12U) after qualifying the three successive preliminary rounds held on 22 November;  beat the defending champions – Modern School, Barakhamba Road in the semi finals. The finals were conducted between DPS RK Puram and La Martiniere School, Kolkata. The school team came second, with a narrow margin. 

The competition was judged by senior Constitutional lawyers practising in the Supreme Court of India and the other courts. It was an enriching experience for the team. 

Class Presentation XI-Q 26-11-2020

Topic- The depth of your abundance depends upon the depth of your gratitude

“The depth of your abundance depends upon the depth of your gratitude” “The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express for”. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, the class presented a pious and heart warming presentation. It started with the morning prayer: Ajai Alai mantra from Jaap Ji Sahib narrated and explained by Daivik Gupta and Saanvi Guliani. Udaay Garg introduced the topic and spoke on its relevance as to how gratitude helps all of us to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into the life and into the lives of all those around. The speech that urged to question gratitude was presented by Adwiti Singhal. The credit for the touching poem goes to Shristi Agrawala, Kanushka Nagpal and Shreya Arora while the teachings of Guru Nanakji were apprised by Simran Joshi. Adding to this wonderful presentation, a short note on Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated on 26th November 2020, was given by Vanya Gupta. Lastly the presentation was concluded by Sanchita Kapoor. The beautiful e – invite and slides were designed by Kavya Gupta. All in all, it was a presentation focussing on the spirit of being thankful for all the blessings by God, and each member in the audience took away a strong message of being grateful for all you have. नवम्बर यानि कार्तिक मास जाना जाता है दीपोत्सव अर्थात दीपावली व प्रकाशोत्सव अर्थात गुरु नानक देव जी की जयंती हेतु कक्षा 9-E की प्रातः कालीन प्रस्तुति का विषय है- अप दीपो भव: (Be Your Own Light) दीप की यह विशेषता है कि वह स्वयं प्रज्वलित होने के बाद अन्य दीपों को भी प्रज्वलित कर सकता है और सभी को अपने प्रकाश से भी लाभान्वित कर सकता है। कोटि-कोटि वर्षों के अंधकार को भी मात्र एक प्रज्वलित दीप द्वारा मिटाया जा सकता है, जब हम स्वयं प्रकाशित होंगे तो समाज को भी प्रकाशित कर पाएंगे क्योंकि व्यक्ति से समाज बनता है और समाज से राष्ट्र।   आत्मनिर्भर भारत के लिए यह परम आवश्यक है कि हम अपना दीप स्वयं बने और किसी पर भी निर्भर ना हो।

इस प्रार्थना सभा का शुभारंभ प्रत्यूष ने अपने उद्घोष द्वारा किया जिसके उपरांत अभिलाषा आचार्य ने अपनी प्रार्थना एक ओंकार प्रस्तुत की जो सर्वधर्म समभाव का प्रतीक है। तत्पश्चात प्रणव तथा आर्यन डागा द्वारा सुविचार प्रस्तुत किया गया। अप दीपो भवः की संकल्पना को आन्या गुप्ता ने अपनेे हिंदी संभाषण द्वारा समझाने का प्रयत्न किया। वर्तमान परिपेक्ष्य में इस विचार की अवधारणा को आशना सुमन ने अपनी अंग्रेजी कविता द्वारा बहुत ही सुंदर ढंग से परिभाषित करने का प्रयत्न किया। मृदंगम पर वेदांत सुधीर ने ना सिर्फ एक सुंदर भजन को प्रस्तुत किया वरन उसके अर्थ को भी समझाया।  सभा के अंत में आत्मनिर्भर भारत के स्वप्न को सार्थक बनाने के महत् उद्देश्य के साथ धन्यवाद ज्ञापन प्रस्तुत किया गया।

Class Presentation VII-K 25-11-2020

Topic – KANNADA RAJYOTSAVA

‘Unity in Diversity’ is a distinctive feature of our nation and festivals bind people together. With this in mind, students of class VII-K delivered a wonderful presentation on the festival, ‘Kannada Rajyotsava’ that celebrates togetherness. The event began with a soulful Shloka ‘Shubham Karoti Kalyanam’ by Riddhima Dalela, which was translated by Manya Lalani. This was followed by the festival’s description by Saanvi Goel and a melodious prayer ‘As  the Deer’ by Aanya Ahuja.  A valuable story on respecting the relations we have with different people in our lives, was narrated by Amandeep Singh, and Kaavya Sharma recited a rejuvenating self-composed poem. Samika Gupta read out a meaningful thought for the day. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ishika Anand. The overall presentation was prepared and compiled by Aditya Goel, Saara Gulati, Hridhya Bhatiani, Agastya Roy, Ishika Anand, Adhiraj Jain, Tvishaa Gupta and Namish Hemdev. Neelanjana Maggo designed the vibrant e- invite and Saara Gulati prepared a short opening video for the event.
