DPS Shiksha Kendra, a school for the underprivileged run on the premises of DPS R.K.Puram , organised its annual Sports Day on 11th February 2011.
The event commenced with felicitation of the dignitaries by the Vice Principal, Mrs. Pushpa Agarwal. Dr. D.R Saini, Principal of DPS R.K.Puram graced the occasion along with Vice Principals, Mrs Shobha Mehta and Dr. R.G Verma; Ms. Shobha Banerjee, Headmistress, DPS Vasant Vihar; Ms Sumita Gupta, Headmistress,DPS International, R.K.Puram; former Vice Principal of DPS R.K.Puram, Mrs.Sarita Goswami and other staff members.
In her welcome address, Mrs Pushpa Agarwal, expressed her gratitude towards Dr, Saini for his constant support and guidance in all endeavours. All the guests were presented with mementoes prepared by DPS Shiksha Kendra as a token of appreciation. The school has been extremely fortunate in mobilising support from parent volunteers of DPS R.K. Puram, who were also present on the occasion.
The opening ceremony started on a patriotic note with a parade. Exuberant students marched across the field dressed as national heroes. This was followed by a salute to the defence brigade and tiny tots on tricycles showcasing their love for the country. The audience sat enthralled as the students depicted the various aspects of nature, dressed in vibrant and colourful costumes. Everybody tapped their feet as the children danced to the tunes of popular Hindi movie songs. The school drills, which form an essential part of everyday life at DPS Shiksha Kendra emphasised the importance of striking a balance between sports and academics. The students participating in the Japanese drill, which included the formation of a human pyramid, impressed one and all with their flexibility and agility.
Dr. Saini addressed the gathering, inspiring students to perform well in all spheres of life. According to him, playing sports encourages the pursuit of excellence and instills qualities of team spirit, honesty and fair play.
The most exciting part of the event was the races. The first was a 100m race for classes 8th and 9th. This was followed by a 200 m, 400 m and a 4×100 m relay race for the same. A 200 m race for class 10th took place. 100m and 200m races for class 11th were also conducted. Amidst much cheer and applause, the winners were awarded medals and certificates.
The ceremony, which boasted of 100% student participation, concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Swarn Sardana, who co-ordinated the programme. It was a memorable day which the students would cherish for a long time.
